Frequently Asked Questions - Questus Marine Leveling Radar Mounts

Frequently Asked Questions...
and Answers

  • Q= My rigger told me that the backstay mounted radar mounts are not good for the rigging... Is this true?

  • A= The Questus Marine Self-Leveling Radar Mounts transfer all torque to the chainplate. Therefore there is very little pressure on the wire or rod. Approximately 20 torque Lbs.
  • Q= I've heard that the movement back and forth of the radome can break the wires.?

A= We've only seen broken wires in improper installations. The Questus Marine Radar Mount is designed so that there is no flexing of the wires. However, you must follow the installation instructions. We have recently seen several boats with improper installations.

  • Q= I've been told that the radar beam is so narrow that when the vessel is heeled over the picture is not accurate?

A= That's true, the typical radar beam is only about 25 degrees, so as the vessel heels, you are spending a lot of time sweeping the sky and the water, but missing many targets on the water.
  • Q= I've heard that it's usually calm when it's foggy, so you're not heeling much anyway.?

A= Not true... there are lots of times when the wind is blowing and you've got fine sailing, but it's also foggy. In those cases you want to be keeping a radar watch for collision avoidance, and you want your radar aimed at the targets around you, not above (in the sky) and below (in the water).
  • Q= I have a manually controlled hydraulic backstay adjuster, and I don't want to mount my radar on the mast, what can I do?

A= No problem, we can accommodate most hydraulic backstay adjusters. Give us a call.

  • Q= Can I replace the mid-section of my Questus Model 400G?

A= Yes, please give us a call for the part # and pricing.

  • Q= The weight of my Radar unit is 16 pounds; do I need to add weight to make it work properly?

A= No, the self-leveling function will work properly with your Radar unit.

  • Q= Will my marine Radar fit the Questus mounting plate?

A= It should as the hole pattern is designed for most marine units, however we suggest you give us a call with your/or intended radar make and model and we will verify the compatibility.

  • Q= Does the Questus Model 400G work on sailboats with a split backstay?

A= Yes they do in 6 different configurations. If the split is more than 8 feet 6 inches above the chain plate, the Questus Radar Mount can be mounted just as if it were a single backstay (Pole in front of the backstay, behind it or over it). The pole will be angled just as the backstay is but the Self-Leveling Radar Mount will remain level. If the split is less than 8 feet 6 inches above the chain plate, mount the pole on centerline and the Questus Radar Mount will be above the split.

  • Q= Can I mount the Questus self-leveling radar mount 400G on a sailing vessel with twin backstays?

A= Yes, mount the 400G on either backstay just as you would a single backstay.

  • Q= Regarding your "over the backstay" radar mount; Does the chain plate attachment require any changes to the backstay (I have a single fixed backstay - no hydraulic adjustment)?

A= The only change is that it will require a different clevis pin and those are available from Questus Marine. Measure the diameter of your existing clevis pin before calling.

  • Q= Some backstays have greater angles to the mast than others; will your 400G self-leveling radar mount be level fore and aft?

A= Yes, there are adjusting screws to level the unit fore and aft and the damper assembly automatically levels the unit athwartships.

  • Q= I am considering purchasing the Model 400G for a backstay mount and have the following questions; 1) What are the dimensions of the Pole Base?

A= Pole Base is 2 and 1/2 inches square. 2) What is the standoff distance between the Pole and the backstay? A= The centerline of the pole is 2 inches from the backstay and is equivalent to 1 and 1/4 inches between the backstay and the Pole. 3) I take the mast down every winter, is the unit intended for easy dis-assembly? A= If you are handy, the 400G is relatively easy to dismount.

  • Q= I currently have a Questus Marine Model 400G mounted on the backstay and now would like to upgrade my radar from an 18 inch diameter unit to a 24 inch diameter unit. Is the head different or can I just change out the mounting plate to accommodate the larger size?

A= The Model 400G and 500G are designed for 18 inch diameter radomes. The Questus Model 300G is designed for 24 inch diameter radomes. No, you cannot just change out the mounting plate; each Radar Mount Model is weight and size specific. Please call us to discuss options (781)639-1900.

  • Q= I'm replacing an old Furuno unit with a smaller Raymarine unit. It was mounted to the mizzen mast with a Questus Model 300G. I'd like to keep the Questus Mount, but the bolt pattern does not match the pattern for the new Raymarine unit, do you sell an adapter plate to accommodate the new Radar unit?

A= Yes we do. Please call with the model numbers and we will give you a part # and pricing.
