The Uniden UM 625 fixed mount VHF radio features 2.2 inch display with large, easy to read bold characters that can be viewed from any angle and even in direct sunlight, increasing the number of places it can be mounted. It has a built in loud hailer and 30 watts of power for increased range. Pair the UM625 radio with an on-board GPS system to activate the radio's DSC features. This will allow the user to share DSC information between other vessels in the area, display key location and position information, and automatically broadcast pinpoint locations during distress calls. This radio is expandable up to four times with Uniden's exclusive WHAM (Wireless Handheld Access Microphone) microphone for use in a second station. WHAM microphones allow the user to control all essential functions without having to install a second radio and antenna.

I live on the lake (2000 sq mi) 13 miles from the nearest road and 2 miles from nearest neighbor. Cell coverage minimal. As long as I am line of site of the antenna (2.4)50' up on a pole I can hear and transmit from the Whamx4 to the 525 and range over 15 miles. My Atlantis can't do that. I plan on two more 525's and several more Whamx4. One can check for the differences 525 vs. 625.

DSC reporting inaccurate

This radio is great except when you need to use it in a distress situation. The DSC transmission does not send your position as accurate as it is showing it on the display. ie, if the display shows your position as say 49 39.999 N, 124 54.999 W, unfortunately it only transmits your position as 49 39.000 N, 124 54.000 W, and this can put you up to a mile away from where people are searching.
