Comments about Western Pacific Flax Packing Extractor Tools:
An essential tool for stuffing box packing removal but unfortunately these ones are junk. I bought the last one at west marine and broke it just as I removed the first ring.
I then ordered 4 with overnight shipping from Jamestown (same brand) and broke 3 of the 4. They use a crimp to hold the corkscrew in place and it just doesn't cut it.
By the way - I'm an ex industrial pump mechanic who used to use packing extractors every day, knows how to use one, and did not use any force other than my hands.. These are toys but I just can't seem to find a quality tool.

I removed 40 year old packing with this tool. I screwed it in and used pliers to get some leverage on the head. I pried the old packing right out of there. I was surprised nothing bent or broke. It's just great. I also used it on the prop shaft packing gland which was so easy as access was better. If you're doing it yourself, treat yourself to one of these.

These corkscrew type tools make the job of renewing shaft packing a much easier chore. Not only that- but it is very important to not damage the surfaces of the stuffing box and shaft. Use the right tool and take your time and you will get a good result.
