Our Oakum caulking is made with bentonite, an inorganic compound that expands over 10 times its volume when wet. It is clean from knots and yarns, is long stranded and has no lumps or ends of sacking. 5 lb. box. Twisted jute packing. 5 lbs. yields 30 lengths of 2-1/2 ft. each. Further improved with golden oils. Does not split. Oakum is the best choice for caulking wide gaps in planking. For varied planking, keep some Caulk Wicking on hand for tight spots, and Caulking Cotton for medium-space gaps. Typically, on boat seams Oakum caulking is next covered by a marine paint. Once dry, the remaining space is filled with seam compound (one for above waterline, another for below) before applying final topcoat.

We used this product to stop leaks between the recently installed headgates of a Dam and the failed concrete wall. The oakum was easly to apply and stopped the leaks, allowing us to install permanent repairs.

We used this oakum on our batteau, Morning Star, for the James River Batteau Festival this year and found it to be just as good as the high priced oakum, good short lengths (2 and 1/2 foot) and great price, [...]!
