I make self bows and this tool is indispensable. Used in conjunction with the "card" cabinet scraper, it removes wood as fast or as slow as you need without leaving a washboard effect on the limbs of the bow. The "Nicholson" rasps you get at the big box stores can't compare!
Comments about Jamestown Distributors Cabinet Rasps:
I bought these after reading about others success in carving down "found" wood for use in interpretive sculpture. They really do remove wood fast and are effective for what I want.
My only fear is that they do seem kind of thin and I worry with the hardness of the metal that they might break if dropped on a hard floor. My other machine made files are thicker and more robust, but do not remove wood as effectively.

I bought the #49 in Italy and when I found it on this site I bought immediately both #49 and #50 for me and for a friend of mine! We are working on an old sailing boat and we find these rasps very excellent … also for their prices!

I have 40 years experience as a furniture maker specializing in chairmaking, nothing comes close to these tools (unless you want to spend many times more than these cost for hand cut french rasps)
Comments about Jamestown Distributors Cabinet Rasps:
I use these for roughing in sculpted table legs or chair arms. The first file I received had a definite ridge down one side that made it unusable. When the replacement arrived it had a more subtle occurrence of the same problem. I was able to fettle it into a usable condition but have not had this problem with others. If this is an indication of a slip in QA for Nicholson, it will be a lot easier to add another $10 or $15 and move up to an Auriou or a Dragon.

I just ordered the 49 and 50 after about a week of investigating who makes quality rasps and where I caould buy them at. I read several reviews online that pointed me to some European made rasps that I am sure perform well, but for the price offered here, I couldn't resist. I received the 49 and 50 [...] and used them within minutes of unpacking. WOW...great tools. I was so happy with them I ordered another set for my brother! Highly reccomend.

Rounded side for longbow tapers/fades; flat side for bellies/sides.

I have owned both the #49 and #50 rasps for decades, as well as several of the highly-praised European handmade rasps. In my opinion, these Nicholsons are as good as any, and thus represent a terrific value. I find the #50 to be the most versatile rasp I have used.

If you've never used a patternmakers rasp, then run, do not walk to get one. This site consistently has the best prices on this item and you should not be without this tool.
You can spend a small fortune getting a "hand cut" rasp, but unless you are a novelty tool collector there is no reason to go elsewhere.
The (mostly) random location of the cutting teeth is the key to controlling this tool--it won't pull itself into or away from the work, but allows you to guide it where YOU want.
Get the #49 and the #50. You won't be sorry.
Like all files and rasps, should be used with a handle, cleaned properly and stored not in contact with other cutting edges.

The Nicholson #49 Rasp is aggressive in stock removal but leaves a relatively finer finish...minimizing the sanding necessary.[...]

Nicholson rasp have a good name for a reason. These pattern makers are a necessity to any woodworking shop. Patternmakers teeth are offset for a smooth cut. Unless you really enjoy sanding file marks then you need these.

Comments about Jamestown Distributors Cabinet Rasps:
Similar to the Nicholson #49, the #50 is a pleasure to use and was very effective in stock removal as well as leaving a fine finish. The differences between the #49 and #50 are small...only very close inspection reveals the slightly smoother finish left by the #50.
I have become very dependent on this tool for final shaping as a wood scultor...so much so that I bought a back-up replacement.
