No calamities, but be most careful about how you apply it. I started with a good bristle brush and it sucked up the paint like a desert cactus; I quickly changed to a 4" trim roller (good quality) and an aluminum lasagna pan. Applying strokes quickly, darting here and there, it looks now like brushed metal. Very good results indeed. I was finished in 40 minutes with a 3' square monster Frigidaire. Trimming out the edges with a small artist's brush proved to be the best way for finishing. Then I went at the back of entrance door and a closet door. All done with 2 quarts.

I live in an old house with large radiators. They were looking pretty shabby untill I painted them with Hammerite. They now look brand new! I've also used it on rusty pipes and railings. Nothing beats the durability and good looks. Truly an amazing and excellent product.

Our new A/C outside unit needed protectiion from the salty and continuous sea breezes on the windward side of OAHU. Applying the HAMMERITE RUST CAP paint on the new split A/C outside unit was a breeze...and even made the new unit look better. I plan to use this paint on all metallic surfaces outside our house!!

I used this paint for many years and for many surfaces. I found it's nearly impossible to apply consistently because it dries to fast. I have better luck spraying but of course you don't get that hammered look. The worst part is in a short time when it's out side the finish will go flat. I know this because I painted several cars. In Florida when the product is exposed to direct sunlight it will spider wed when painted on PVC. I still like this product because I'm still using it.

Comments about Hammerite Paints Hammerite Rust Cap Paint "Hammered Finish" Cans:

I bought a truck from my father back in 1973. He would hose out the interior after a trip into the wild, so there was a lot of moisture being held by the pad under the rubber mat. When I pulled out the original mat and pad, I was freaked out by all the rust I saw- some silver dollar size coins of rust, but still a solid and not rusted completely through interior floor. I made a trip to a local hardware store and explained my dilemma. The sales guy handed me a quart can of Hammerite and told me to just brush out the loose and detached rust from the area to be treated, and then to use a soft bristle brush on a vacuum cleaner to get the really fine stuff out. He told me NOT to use any chisels, scrapers, sanding, etc. Just brushed it on with a good quality oil-based paint brush (and don't paint in direct sunlight- it will gum up quickly) and here I am testifying to the miracles of Hammerite some 37 years later. The floorboard I painted is as good now as it was when it was seemingly wrecked beyond repair.
Don't be fooled by other so-called rust-encapsulating products offered up by some others. They simply will not do the job as this one does. It is truly amazing!

Comments about Hammerite Paints Hammerite Rust Cap Paint "Hammered Finish" Cans:

I was involved in restoring a small church on the coast built in 1873. The iron frame supporting the church bell was in dire need of attention. The painter gave us a bid of $1000 to fix it.

Heard about Hammerite from Terry at the lumberyard. He told me that a customer came in with a 12" square of rusty iron plate, and put one coat of Hammerite across the middle; and 20 years later, the Hammerite held its integrity.

When online, found Jamestown Distributors, ordered the product and it was shipped out the same day. I applied the product, 2-coats per instructions. Went on easy and smooth. Great finish. Will get back to you in 20 years.

Comments about Hammerite Paints Hammerite Rust Cap Paint "Hammered Finish" Cans:

Living in coastal Florida, I have used this product for a long time. I am very careful about having the surface very clean and all loose rust removed therefore I have never seen rust come thru hammerite in several projects over a long period of time. I agree with everything the previous reviewers have said. The fake hammerite is the only one available in the stores. It is awful so I must buy hammerit online. It can be difficult to apply on vertical surfaces as it is thick, but also tends to run. When you get the hang of it, the dried finish is beautiful, hard, shiny and a joy to touch. I love this product.

Comments about Hammerite Paints Hammerite Rust Cap Paint "Hammered Finish" Cans:

After seeing Hammerite used on outdoor gas piping and told that the directions on the can dictated that the product is to be applied directly over the existig rust--without removing the loose rust--I bought a can for use om my boat tarailer that is used exclusivly in salt water enviorment. The galvanizing on the trailer was rusted through in many places after five years, even after judicious freash water rinse after each dunk. I applied the Hammerite dirctly over the rusted portions and not only did it cover perfectly with one coat, it was almost impossible to detect where the galvanizing ended and the paint began, it matched in color and texture so well. A couple of years later the rust peeked through but was easily covered with a nother coat, it lasted as long as the galvanizing in that regard. Alas, when I thought the trailer was going to look like a rusted hunk of junk, I found a truly miraculas product.

Highly decorative finish, resulting in a "hammered metal" appearance. I used it in my foyer on the inside of my front doors along with dated (1970's)iron stair railings. The result was incredible! All of my guests want to touch my doors! This paint can do more than cover rust!

Comments about Hammerite Paints Hammerite Rust Cap Paint "Hammered Finish" Cans:

I have used HAMMERITE by Masterchem many many times and cannot sing highly enough of its praises. DO NOT confuse this with any other "hammered" product such as the ones now offered by [...] product does a horrible job of rust encapsulating and will typically flake off within a few weeks or months. If you are really wanting to seal bare and or rusted metal for good then look no further than the real HAMMERITE. I also suggest that you only use the paint can variety as the product is a very thick epoxy-like paint that will gum any spray can in seconds which proves to be much more hassle than it's worth it time, effort, and cost. Furthermore you DO NOT want to breathe ANY of the spray vapor as this product has chemical based heat-hardening glass in it which is what makes it so durable and long lasting. Once set it is tough as nails!I suggest spending the money on a whole gallon as once you use this stuff you will quickly want to use it on every piece of exterior metal you own! (and I'm not kidding either) It is that good !!!I have used this product for years and it works excellent on ANY surface but is most commonly made for new metal and rusted metal and thus will work wonders on your car, truck, jeep, trailer, boat, and or any exterior metal such as fences, deck railings, or metal patio furniture. DO NOT use rollers with this product as again the thick epoxy like paint will leave a ton of roller hair on your applied surface AND will actually begin to eat and melt the roller within 10 minutes. (I learned the hard way..)This can also go for brushes so make sure you get an oil based brush that can stand up to Xylol or Xylene based products. Use a respirator and latex gloves when applying the paint and once your project is complete I highly suggest that you throw the brush and gloves away. (so make a big list of all that you plan to paint with that brush for the day..) I have tried cleaning my brushes with Xylol after painting with Hammerite but again it is more hassle than its worth as the brush will never get fully clean and typically dries hard thus negating any real reuseability. On rusted surfaces make sure to remove as much flake and rust scale before application so that it sticks to a solid surface. Degrease any greasy metal first too and allow time to dry. Masterchem also makes a primer if this will be used on metal such as aluminum, tin, or galvanized metal. Otherwise it is great as is on steel and iron. When applying it DO NOT paint in direct sunlight as it will gum up quickly. Paint in the shade and paint quickly. Don't go back over an area you just painted either as that will also gum it up and will screw up the hammered appearance. This stuff likes to set up fast so plan your painting strategy and paint quickly. Then apply more coats later if need be. (read the directions!!) I typically apply a thick liberal first coat and then might apply a second if I see any areas that appear too thin. (just watch out for drips and runs if you are liberal with the paint!) If you apply a thick first coat the paint will achieve the large desired hammered effect very nicely.Even though a gallon is up to [$] now I feel that it is worth every penny in the amount of maintenance-free worries it provides for years and years! I wouldn't be surprised if this stuff gets painted on the space shuttle! It's A + + +

Comments about Hammerite Paints Hammerite Rust Cap Paint "Hammered Finish" Cans:

Thomas Edison was asked how he felt taking so much time and over TWO THOUSAND attempts before finally achieving a lasting filament. Edison responded "My dear friend, it didn't take me two thousand attempts to find a lasting filament, I discovered two thousand ways how NOT to make a light bulb!"

In the coastal regions of the Southeastern US, the corrosive battle of salt, high humidity, and steel is relentless and frustrating. So many products, many requiring special equipment or multiple steps, tedious application processes, two-part epoxies, extended curing times unrealistic for properties already occupied or in service, or ALL OF THE ABOVE! After modern processes like powder-coating, electrostatic processes, hopes of finally winning this battle were quickly dashed as I witnessed the all too familiar reddish-brown cancer begin to break through the promising shiny coatings, much like weeds poking through concrete embankments.

My conclusion: avoid spec'ing steel whenever structural requirements permitted and use more costly powder-coated aluminum; the costs of which were often prohibitive when budgets were tighter than tolerances!

Wandering the isles of a small "mom and pop" hardware store, I came across rather non-descript cans of paint of a brand I'd never heard of, with a picture of a rather bumpy-looking finish referred to as "hammered", touting the inclusion of GLASS FILAMENTS. If ever there was a gimmick, this HAD to be one I thought. . .

Often accused of being relentless or suffering from a Quixote-like syndrome battling rusty windmills, I was inexorably drawn into yet another attempt of winning what seemed an untenable battle.

Whatever the reason, it appears marketing is not at the top of the list for Masterchem, for if it was, there’d be a lot less rust in Miami; the endless rows of rusted security doors and windows would cease to scar the homes they protect.

Even after decades of exposure or single coats applied too thickly by novices, I see no sign of cancer. The only provision being it must COMPLETELY cover the steel substrate, no matter how fine the detail of the steelwork. Patio furniture, security doors, railings, continue to shine, and the “hammered” texture continues to draw the attention and touch of passers by. The most difficult part of the application is FINDING the product!

This latter problem now made worse by a far more commonly known brand that clearly recognizes the value of marketing, their ads often seen on television, and their introduction of a product that looks not-so-coincidentally almost identical to Hammerite and now easily found in both small hardware stores and home centers. But caution, that is where the similarity ends. Due to ease of purchase, I’ve tried this product and its performance in no way resembles that of it’s predecessor! Its cure time is far longer, tack time seems endless, adhesion far weaker, the finish less consistent. How they got their product to look so similar yet perform so dissimilar is a complete and dismal mystery to me.

Rarely have I taken this much time and so many words to comment on a product, but the performance of Hammerite and the introduction of a copycat that may hurt Hammerite in more than one way. This copycat looks so similar that some may generalize its performance to that of Hammerite’s. It is this heinous possibility that compels me to devote so much time in composing this review.

As always, caveat emptor to the consumer, and tempus fugit to Hammerite: a company that should look back at the battle of Betamax Vs VHS, two now defunct products and a battle from which Sony learned and learned well; witness “My First Sony”. Until such time, Hammerite will be relegated to the few, the competent, and the relentless.

Comments about Hammerite Paints Hammerite Rust Cap Paint "Hammered Finish" Cans:

The paint tended to "Fish Eye" slightly in areas that had been applied with a brush, but then again I may have applied too thick of a coat. Using a good quality roller and applying the paint in long strokes in the same direction proved to be the best for my application. Spraying would most likely be the ideal way to apply, but wasn't possible in my case. Brush applied small sections did not "Fish Eye" on me, which baffled me a little. I am completely satisfied with the results, sometimes it takes a little trial and error, with a product you're not familiar with. I will be using this paint alot in the future and have already purchased this same product twice since the original purchase.

Comments about Hammerite Paints Hammerite Rust Cap Paint "Hammered Finish" Cans:

In the 1982 "Men At Work" song "Do You Come From a Land Down Under" the opening line was "Travelling in a fried-out Kombi..." which refered to a Volkswagon bus that had been salvaged after a major fire. Ironically, in 1990 I bought a 1976 VW bus for $75 following a major engine fire. The goal wasn't a "show quality" resoration, but "let's get this thing working again, and looking good on a budget. A couple new tires, some upholstery, engine parts, and a paint job were all that was needed. And you guessed it, HAMMERITE was the paint. I scored a couple dozen cans of mid-green Hammerite, sanded and masked off the van, and spray painted that "fried-out kombi". It made three trips cross country and down into Mexico before I sold it for $2500. The paint looked great, if a bit unconventional. the Hammered finish was easy to keep, and never faded or looked dull. I cannot convey strongly enough how much I recommend this product.
