Comments about Pettit Z-Spar Z Spar Captain's Varnish:

I'm in the intermediate stages of learning how to put down a good finish, and this was my second project with this product. This one is on our windward Hawaii ocean front, iron wood front gate. I spent a great deal of time in preparation. The only step I skipped was using a wood grain filler, because I couldn't find the product recommended. I think this might be key in assuring a perfect finish. I ended up with a nice but not perfect finish after five coats. It's kind of hard to get two coats on per day. Also, even using a very expensive brush, I still had some orange peeling. The temperature here is generally around 80 or slightly over, so next time, in addition to finding the wood filler, I'll try to get the T12 thinner and see if it levels a little better. Also, the relative humidity in a windward oceanfront environment must be pretty close to 100%, so I'm not sure what the heck I'm supposed to do about that! I mean it is a marine varnish, for Pete's sake. Am a supposed to take the project to a desert or air conditioned room to apply it?

Key to sand first. Works really well. Makes wood look beautiful. Now need to see how it works with the boat outside for a season.

Comments about Pettit Z-Spar Z Spar Captain's Varnish:

Used it to varnish a sitka spruce bow pole for a classic Chris Craft. Usually use Schooner but didn't want the amber color. The spar looks great, drys fast, has nice build and leveling. No sags on the verticle application.

Comments about Pettit Z-Spar Z Spar Captain's Varnish:

Use it on an exterior door as I ran out of sikkens cetol marine. I'm not disappointed as it looks great, dries fast and smooth, but the quick buildup left noticeable 'pools' and 'levels' in a low angle light no matter how I smoothed it with foam or bristle brush (probably not noticeable to the untrained eye). Could be that it was the temp (80) in my garage in July.

Comments about Pettit Z-Spar Z Spar Captain's Varnish:

As I was short on my favoured LeTonkinios I tried a can of the 1015 z-Spar and used it on a transom and some cabin interior parts. The z-spar is OK at best, compared with LeTinkinios it does not flow as nice, builds up too fast, is smelly and clean up is hazardous. Due to its comparably high viscosity it is by far not as economical as the LeTonkinios, the finish ths not as "smooth and clean" - even after 7 coats.
This is a typical Varnish - nothing special. If you want to experience how great varnish can be: try LeTonkinios (make sure you order the "Vernis Marine No1")

Comments about Pettit Z-Spar Z Spar Captain's Varnish:

This varnish was used to finish the inside and
outside of a clear-coat, ribbed-red-cedar canoe. The product went on smoothly and provided a hard beautiful finish. At a recent canoe gathering-many of the canoeists commented on the fabulous finish.
I was also impressed with Jamestown Distributors on the rapid turn-around on the order over ther 4th of July weekend which allowed the canoe to be finished just in time for the canoe gathering. Thanks!

Provided very good penetration and coverage on a cedar outdoor swing that I have. So far it has only been on the swing a couple months in the hot Midwestern sun but it still looks as good as the day it was put on.

Comments about Pettit Z-Spar Z Spar Captain's Varnish:

I have been using this product for over 30 yrs on the same sailboat masts. The more coats (20) the longer lasting before refinishing (appx 5 yrs). If you use <10 coats, you will have to climb the masts 2-3 time a year for additional coats in order to get the 5 yr life before total refinish.
