I recently installed this pump in the back of a small outboard-powered skiff. I chose it over float-switch operated pumps because I didn't have much room. Also, looking at internet ratings, these automatic pumps seemed to be consistently higher rated than similar pumps with float switches, leading me to surmise that float switches are more problematic. This pump has 3 wires, so it can be wired to come on continuously, or for the characteristic on every 2 1/2 minutes to "test" for water. I only wired the intermittent circuit, although I see myself wiring continuous mode in the future to force it to run, for example during clean-out of the boat after use. The pump works very well. The slight noise when it cycles on is noticeable, but not objectionable.
I will only occasionally use it to keep the boat pumped out while unattended. I have not yet used it long enough to judge long-term reliability.

This is a GREAT pump. I bought two to replace older and much larger pumps with external float switches. Since this one cycles, and detects water, it is trouble free.
I have a leaking outdrive boot, and a stream of water is leaking in. This pump not only keeps up, but cycles off when it catches up.
Yes, I do plan to replace the leaking boot next week.

I liked this pump until I found it running none stop with no water in the bildge, Paid over $70 for the pump this spring, about 90 days ago. Waiting to see how the marine store is going to back up my purchase with no receipt.

These pumps are the best idea ever! Forget broken and/or unreliable float switches. The pump cycles regularly (and you get used to the quiet sound), staying on only if it detects resistance - water. The other review here is a small boat, obviously, with no charger. Pump uses only a very small amount of amps, and if you're hooked to shorepower it's a no-brainer. I LOVE these pumps! So will you.

I have used a RULE automatic bilge pump for years.
I have owned several of these and have had no problems such as Fred describes.
The pump cycles periodicly to sample for water and than shuts down. In doing so, it uses very little current.
I find this much more reliable than a float switch, which is prone to hanging up.
The only thing I can think of is that Fred had a small leak, causing the pump to constantly be pumping out his bilge, leading to a dead battery.

I live over 30 mins from the harbor. I need to know that my bilge is dry and i don't have to worry about my boat. This little unit has worked great for years.

I currently have an old school 60 ft motoryacht and for 1 year I have had an 1100 auto pump. This pump is fantastic and worry free. Yes the pump does turn itself on every 2 1/2 minutes....and yes it will pull on your battery. That is why every experienced boater has a trickle charger or maintainer on there batteries. I have never had a problem with the power source or this pump...I highly recommend it
