We have not actually used the device yet but the concept seems like a good one and it is more affordable than an EIRB. Having said that, if you purchase the functionality touted in the ad copy you will spend $200 annually for the subscription.

Works where your cell phone won't

The Spot is a great item to have on you when you're hiking, biking, or going on long trips to areas where cellphone coverage is bad. It's very rugged, waterproof, and floats. The battery life is great too. The only thing I don't like about it is that there's no way for you to tell when a message was successfully sent or not. The battery door is a pain to open up and almost impossible wearing gloves. There's also not a lot of printed information. You have to do a lot of reading online.
