Marine Caulks and Adhesive Sealants

A largely unnoticed line of products in boat construction and repair are caulking and adhesive sealants, and caulking tools (caulk guns. Sikaflex, 3M, BoatLife, and a few others are the major producers of such products. Marine caulking has numerous usages from bedding teak decks to sealing thru-hull attachments. Many of the different products also have extremely different characteristics. If a cement like seal is required, application of 3M 5200 may be needed, where as a deck joint may need to flex with the boats' motion/expansion and contraction and a BoatLife Marine Silicone Rubber will be required. A variety of sizes of each product are offered.

Sikaflex adhesives and sealants are some of our most popular products, and are extensively used in the construction of a wide range of marine craft and structures. In fact Sika products are great from everything from pleasure yachts to passenger liners, fishing boats to tankers, and canoes to oil rigs. Sikaflex adhesive and sealant systems will provide a tough, waterproof, yet flexible bond between a multitude of materials and can be used with confidence above and below waterline.

Correct surface preparation is the key to successful bonding. In many instances all that is required, with the Sikaflex Marine Product Line, is a simple cleaning operation, but where there are weak or contaminated surfaces, more extensive preparation is needed to ensure a perfect bond. Typical problem areas include dust, dirt, grease, fat, oil, rust, flaking paint, etc. The actual pretreatment selected will depend on the type of substrate (metal, plastic, paint, wood, etc.), the operating conditions in service, the degree of surface deterioration and the practicalities of any particular installation. 3M 5200 Marine Adhesive/Sealant is also a great product. This high performance polyurethane adhesive/sealant becomes tack-free in 48 hours, completely cures in 5-7 days with no shrinkage. Seal retains its strength above or below the water line. Stays flexible, allows for structural movement. Easy to apply with a caulk gun or with smaller squeeze tubes. Remains workable for up to hours and won't sag at seams.
