Grilling, Cooking and Galley Supplies

Hats off to the Galley Chef Wizard

Of all the challenges of cooking, arguably none are so great as preparing a meal at sea. This typically means limited space, a rolling horizon, hungry crew and one very anxious chef. The job grows exponentially more difficult without the right tools. A good set of cookware and a dedicated marine cooktop are a great start to get you cooking on any sea. For grilling in port, try an over the rail grill. These units mount easily to a stern rail and lessen any fire and mess hazard onboard. Cleanup is also much easier on deck. For cooking while underway, a galley cooker is required. This can be as simple as a mini single burner that is gimbal mounted to a bulkhead, or a full sized stovetop and oven. Most units operate off propane (LPG) and may require some plumbing to install. Their advantage is a dry space (hopefully), that is sheltered from wind to protect cooking flames. A gimballed unit will also pivot with the roll of the boat. Imagine fixing a pot of soup somewhere out in the Gulf Stream! Fiddles are hardware that secures pots and pans to the burner with curved bracing arms and thumb screws. These are literally a lifesaver, preventing scalds, burns, ruined meals and disgruntled crew. A side benefit to the galley oven- try this trick next time you wake to a cold cabin. Crack the companionway to ensure a little airflow, then kick on the oven and keep it's door open. The cabin will be dry and warm in short order.

Quality Cookware

A good set of cookware goes a long way in a galley. Nothing is worse than trying to get some shuteye with the nuisance of odd clanging noises calling you back to the waking world. A good set of nesting cookware saves space and helps you rest. Stainless steel is good stuff onboard. For cookware, it means you can use freshwater supplies sparingly. Wash down the dishes post meal with seawater and finish off with a quick freshwater rinse. The stainless stuff won't corrode.

Marine Food Storage

Food storage onboard is another concern. For cruising vessels with limited power supply, a solid block of ice packed in a well insulated cooler goes a long way. Marine coolers are typically built a bit more rugged and better insulated than the simple picnic cooler available from the grocer. If space and power supply permits, a marine refrigerator greatly extends your menu options. A few days out and the meats and cheeses are still fit to eat, with a cold drink in hand. These simple luxuries are immeasurable at sea. What makes a marine refigerator different from your household one? Here are a few highlights. The compressor units in marine frig continue to operate many degrees off level. Hermetically sealed compressor means it is quiet and sealed against corrosion. Doors mechanically latch shut. Most important, it accepts both AC and DC power source.

Serve it up

When it comes time to eat, keep it on the table. Simple accessories such as drink holders, pedestal tables and unbreakable dishware complete the experience. Bottle openers for a cold one or a glass of wine, and nothing could be finer. An evening meal at sunset, in your favorite quiet harbor looking out from the comfort of the cockpit. Life is good.
