Fairing Compounds and Repair Putties

Fairing refers to the filling and shaping of low areas so they blend with the surrounding surfaces and appear "fair" to the eye and touch. After major structural assembly has been completed, final fairing can be easily accomplished with epoxy and low-density fillers. Fairing compound is often also used prior to fiberglassing to ensure an even surface, and because it sands easier than fiberglass. Surface fillers, fairing compounds, and repair compounds are used to fill large cavities, cover large areas, and provide a smooth surface for subsequent processes. Fiberglass hulls frequently require minor touch up repairs to address scratches and other surface defects.

Fiberglass repair products such as 3M High Strength repair filler are used for bonding, filling and fairing repairs above or below the waterline. There are also putties designed for addressing scrapes, pin holes, and scratches on hulls and other below-waterline areas. Before selecting a fairing compound or repair product, carefully assess the product's suitability for your repair, ie above or below the waterline. Filling and patching products like Bondo filler are suited for below-waterline use.
