Marine Paint Primers, Sealers and Undercoats Explained

The majority of primers and sealers are products that improve the ability of a finishing paint to adhere to surfaces. Primers typically form a binding layer while filling imperfections on the surface layer of the substrate material.

Many primers are designed to be used on one material substrate only. Some primers are capable of being applied to multiple substrates - for example, a number of the Topside Paint Primers are suitable for use on wood, metal and fiberglass.

Typical Primer and Sealer applications include: Topside Paint Primer; Barrier Coat Primer; Metal Primer, Rust Converters, Aluminum Etch and Primer, Outdrive / Engine Primer; Wood Sealers and Primer; Fiberglass Primer and Antifouling Primer.

There are additional application-specific primers, coatings and sealers (sound dampening paint, wallpaper primer, water tank coatings, etc.) that will not be part of this discussion.

Choosing the correct type of primer or sealer is not difficult once the application, surface materials, specific paint systems and their physical characteristics are understood.

Topside Paint Primers

  • Where to use: Above the waterline applications. Note: There are a few primers that are also approved for use below the waterline. Review the product literature to confirm each application prior to use.
  • Do not use for: Below the waterline applications. See note above.
  • Cure time: Varies widely from product to product, also depends upon temperature, humidity, re-coat times, number of coats required, etc. Consult manufacturer's literature.
  • Cautions: Avoid prolonged or repeated skin contact. Use only in well ventilated areas.

One-Part Primers: One-component primers are designed for use with one-part paint systems. One-part paint systems include these material types: Yacht Enamels (Interlux Toplac, Premium yacht Enamel), (Epifanes Yacht Enamel); Monourethane-alkyd paints (Epifanes Monourethane); One-part Polyurethane paint (Interlux Brightsides). One-part paint systems are the easiest to work with and apply for the do-it-yourselfer. These paint systems are typically used on fiberglass, wood, steel and aluminum above-the-waterline surfaces.

Products and Brands: Epifanes Multi Marine Primer (also compatible with 2-part finishes), Epigrond Primer; Interlux Pre-Kote Primer; Pettit Undercoaters 6149 & 6165.

Two-Part Epoxy Primers: Epoxy primers provide excellent adhesion and filling properties. Epoxy primers typically can be used above or below the waterline. Epoxy primers are appropriate for a wide range of substrates including fiberglass, aluminum and steel. Two-part epoxy primers provide a hard, strong base designed for the application of epoxy and polyurethane paint systems. Two-component paint systems are generally more complex to use and apply than one-part paint products. Two-part paint systems provide the deepest gloss and the longest lasting finish.

NOTE: There are several two-part products labeled for PROFESSIONAL USE ONLY. Follow all manufacturer's product application and safety instructions.

Products and Brands: Epifanes Multi Marine Primer (also compatible with 1-part finishes), Epifanes Epoxy Primer Paint; Interlux Epoxy Primekote; Awlgrip Epoxy Primers; System Three Epoxy Primer.

For detailed application information always consult the manufacturer's product literature. It is standard good practice to use the recommended primers, fillers, primers, paints and solvent systems from the same manufacturer.

Barrier Coat Primer

What is a Barrier Coat and why do I need it?

A barrier coating is the application of a specialized epoxy product that provides an effective moisture resistant surface that helps to minimize the occurrence of gelcoat blisters. Barrier coatings may be applied to new hulls as a gelcoat blister preventative strategy or as a part of a hull repair system.

What is Gelcoat Blistering?

Gelcoat blisters are the by-product of osmosis caused by a chemical reaction between water and cured polyester resins in the fiberglass hull. Water permeates the exterior gelcoat and reacts with the chemicals within the hull creating acids. These reactive chemicals create pressure behind the gelcoat which can result in blisters and surface cracks. Once the blistering process commences it will usually spread throughout the laminate causing serious cosmetic and structural damage.

  • Where to use: Primarily used on fiberglass hulls below the waterline. May also be applied to aluminum and steel substrates where corrosion is a concern.
  • Do not use for: Wood.
  • Cure time: Varies widely from product to product, also depends upon temperature, humidity, re-coat times, number of coats required, etc. Consult manufacturer's literature.
  • Cautions: Avoid prolonged or repeated skin contact. Use only in well ventilated areas.

Two-Part Epoxy Barrier Coat Primers: Epoxy Barrier Coat primers provide excellent adhesion and filling properties. Barrier Coat primers are designed to be used below the waterline on fiberglass hulls. These Epoxy primers are appropriate for a wide range of substrates including fiberglass, aluminum and steel. Typically, once the barrier coat is complete the antifouling or bottom paint will be applied.

Products and Brands: Interlux InterProtect 2000E, Interlux InterProtect 3000/3001 Epoxy Primer; Pettit Protect Epoxy Primer; Sea-Hawk Barrier Coat, Sea-Hawk barrier Coat Primer, Sea-Hawk Tuff Stuff High-Build Primer; ePaint EP-Prime 1000 Epoxy Primer; Boero Defender Underwater Epoxy Primer; Smiths Moisture Diffusion Barrier Coating; Blue Water Marine Bottom Protect Primer, Blue Water Marine Bottom Protect Sealer Kit, Blue Water Marine BarrierShield Primer, Blue Water Marine Coal Tar Epoxy Primer

For detailed application information always consult the manufacturer's product literature. It is standard good practice to use the recommended primers, fillers, primers, paints and solvent systems from the same manufacturer.

Metal Primers, Rust Converters, Aluminum Etch and Primer, Outdrive / Engine Primer

What products are available to combat metal corrosion?

Metal Primers: Metal Primers are products that improve the ability of a finishing paint to adhere to bare surfaces. Metal primers typically form a binding layer while filling imperfections on the surface layer of the substrate material. The use of a primer is highly recommended if the metal object may be exposed to moisture, particularly saltwater.

Products and Brands: Interlux Primocon Metal Primer; Pettit Metal Primer, Pettit Tie Coat Primer, Pettit Underwater Metal Kit, Pettit Rustlok and Trailercoat Steel Primers; Boero 653 Delta 3000 Anticorrosive Primer, Boero 651 Epoxy Primer Hardener; Awlgrip Wash Primer CF; Owatrol CIP Corrosion Inhibiting Primer; Hammerite Galvanized and Aluminum Primer; Smiths Corrosion Inhibiting Chromate Epoxy Paint

An Aluminum Etch kit is a two part product for use on bare aluminum surfaces as a pre-treatment to improve paint adhesion. Bare aluminum benefits from the application of a strontium chromate epoxy primer to ensure that the final paint finish adheres properly. There are related products that are packaged in aerosol containers and sold as aluminum Outdrive / Engine primers.

Products and Brands: WEST System 860 Aluminum Etch Kit; Pettit Aluma Aluminum Epoxy Primer Kit; Interlux Primocon Aerosol; Sea-Hawk Outboard and Outdrive Primer

Rust Converters: Rust Converters develop a protective film (usually phosphates) on iron or steel surfaces that protect from further rusting. It should be made clear that these products are not a paint product. Rust converters are a good choice when it would be difficult or impractical to sand blast or mechanically remove the rust. Use these products on cars, trucks, trailers, fences, iron railings, sheet metal, tanks, and any ferrous based object. Once dry, these surfaces may be overcoated with a wide selection of paints.

  • Where to use: Iron, steel and ferrous alloys. Review product literature.
  • Do not use for: Non-ferrous materials.
  • Cure time: Typically 24 hours.
  • Cautions: Avoid skin and eye contact. The use of protective gloves is highly recommended.

Products and Brands: Ospho Metal Treatment; CRC Rust Converter; Boatlife Git Rust; Smith's Phos-Coat Rust Converter and Iron/Galvanize Pretreatment

For detailed application information always consult the manufacturer's product literature. It is standard good practice to use the recommended primers, fillers, primers, paints and solvent systems from the same manufacturer.

Fiberglass Primer (non-sanding)

  • Where to use: New or unpainted fiberglass hulls. Below the waterline - prior to the application of antifouling paint.
  • Do not use for: Above the waterline applications.
  • Cure time: 1/2 hr -2 hrs depending upon ambient temperature & humidity.
  • Cautions: Avoid prolonged or repeated skin contact. Use only in well ventilated areas.

Fiberglass 'No Sand Primers' eliminate the need to abrade the hull prior to the application of antifouling paint. These products are recommended for new boat hulls where abrading of the gelcoat may void the manufacturer's warranty. Fiberglass primers are used on bare gelcoat (polyester or vinylester) and epoxy primed surfaces, and are compatible with the majority of antifouling paints.

Products and Brands: Interlux Fiberglass No Sand Primer; Pettit Skip Sand Primer, Pettit Sandless Primer, Sea-Hawk Non-Sanding Primer, Sea-Hawk Hawk's Grip

For detailed application information always consult the manufacturer's product literature. It is standard good practice to use the recommended primers, fillers, primers, paints and solvent systems from the same manufacturer.

Antifouling Primer

Products and Brands: Aquagard Primers; Interlux TBT Sealer

  • Where to use: Specialized applications, consult product literature.
  • Do not use for: Product dependent, consult manufacturer's instructions, warnings.
  • Cure time: Varies widely from product to product, also depends upon temperature, humidity, recoat time, number of coats required, etc. Consult manufacturer's literature.
  • Cautions: Avoid prolonged or repeated skin contact. Use only in well ventilated areas.

Aquagard Antifouling Primers are a specialized group of products designed to improve final coat adhesion on a variety of materials and substrates. These materials may include aluminum, fiberglass, steel and wooden surfaces or a combination thereof. Each product is application specific so that it is important to review the manufacturer's recommendations. All of these primers are formulated to be used prior to the application of antifouling paint.

Interlux TBT Sealer is designed to be used when converting from antifouling coatings containing Tributyl-tin (TBT). TBT antifouling paints are susceptible to solvent attack from primers and non-TBT containing antifouling paints. TBT Sealer will not cause the TBT to soften or crack. TBT Sealer can be applied by brush, roller or with airless or conventional spray equipment.

For detailed application information always consult the manufacturer's product literature. It is standard good practice to use the recommended primers, fillers, primers, paints and solvent systems from the same manufacturer.

Wood Sealers and Wood Primers

  • Where to use: Wood Sealers and Primers are used to prepare wood surfaces for finishing.
  • Do not use for: Oily woods like teak without surface preparation. Follow manufacturer's instructions.
  • Cure time: Varies widely from product to product, also depends upon temperature, humidity, recoat time, number of coats required, etc. Consult manufacturer's literature.
  • Cautions: Avoid prolonged or repeated skin contact. Use only in well ventilated areas.

Most Wood Sealer products are designed to promote a uniform finish prior to the application of varnish or paint. Wood Sealers are designed to promote quick drying and easy sanding to a final smooth finish. Products and Brands: Pettit Old Salem 2018 Clear Sealer; Interlux Interprime; Z-Spar S-120 Clear Wood Sealer, S-94 Clear Acrylic Sealer; AwlBrite Quik-Fil Clear Base; Boero Polywood Sealer

Before painting, Wood Primers are an essential step in order to ensure a satisfactory final finish. Due to the inherent porosity of wood, solvent will be absorbed from the paint, causing premature drying. A layer of primer will help the paint to complete a proper curing cycle. The addition of a primer coat improves the waterproofing qualities of the final paint coating. All wood primers are made to penetrate and bond. But some primers can hide the colors of previous coatings and also obscure emerging wood grain.

Products and Brands: Epifanes Werdol Wood Primer; Circa 1850 Prime-It, Prime-It Plus; Z-Spar 105 White Enamel Undercoat; Fine Paints of Europe Oil Primer/Undercoat

For detailed application information always consult the manufacturer's product literature. It is standard good practice to use the recommended primers, fillers, primers, paints and solvent systems from the same manufacturer.
