King StarBoard

King StarBoard is the definitive marine grade polymer material. Made by the King Plastic Corporation from a proprietary process called K-Stran for flatness and consistency, it is environmentally stabilized for harsh sun and tough marine environments. Stringent manufacturing practices ensure consistent tolerances, colors, density, and thickness. Synonymous to this day with marine plastic in the boating industry, King StarBoard does not rot, swell, splinter or de-laminate when exposed to humidity or water. Made to exacting specifications, users can be assured of consistent color, thickness and density across all choices. Do-it-yourself types will appreciate its how easy it is to fabricate and work using standard woodworking tools, and that it requires minimal finishing.

This material makes for easy cleaning and never needs refinishing. It's utterly weatherproof nature makes Starboard the choice of thousands of boat owners when choosing construction materials for swim platforms, hand rails, steps, dinghy chocks, fish-cleaning tables, hatches, doors, grab rails & handles, step and dock boxes, fishing rod holders, cup holders, non-galley countertops, chairs, tables, frames and trim. It is used by nearly every boat manufacturer.

Sheets are environmentally stabilized to withstand even the harshest environments, and will not rot or discolor like teak and other solid woods. Unlike wood, it won't rot, swell, splinter or delaminate when exposed to humidity or water.

Starboard vs Starlite XL
King Starlite XL is closed cell (cellular) material of recycled Starboard. Up to 35% lighter, it is ideal for boat parts, as an upholstery substrate, and in behind-the-scenes applications where edges aren't visible. Available in 3/8 and 1/2 thickness, Starlite XL is a suitable replacement for lightweight wood like plywood of MDF. It holds staples and screws, and flexes without breaking unlike plywood or PVC foam materials. The lighter composition of Starlite XL makes it an ideal choice for for cutting boards, cockpit covers, tackle centers, recess hatches, baitwell covers, mounting electronics, doorstops and thresholds.

Working With King StarBoard Material

No special tools are required. Standard woodworking tools and components with standard screws and fasteners are suitable. It can be notched and bent around curves, and for superior strength you can use specialized plastic welding equipment for joints.

Note: There are many applications where King StarBoard plastic is a longer lasting and more economical alternative to wood. However, because StarBoard is not a structural material, it cannot be used to build boat hulls or used where temperature come close to or exceed 180 degrees Fahrenheit because it will begin to melt.
