Questions & Answers about Teleflex Hydraulic Seal Kit For Outboard Cylinders:
2013-05-24ROBERT TUCKER asked: what is the diffuclty level of replacing these seals for a person that has never done this before? I have a good head for mechanical work, I just have never replaced this type of seal before.

2013-05-25CHARLES JONES: Then go for it. I did and had no problem. Just figure out that the end of the cylinder has to be screwed out. Large vice grips will turn it counterclockwise.
2013-05-27Robert Tucker: Thanks a boat-load Charles....I did not think it would be complicated, I just don't like surprises
2013-05-17A shopper asked: I have sea star HH5770. need cylinder seal kit. which one will work?
2013-05-15KEVIN ENGLUND asked: I am trying to replace the o rings but the diagram is not very clear on where they go.I see one set goes to the bleeder screw (2 o rings) but when I disconnect the hydraulic lines I don't see any o rings in line or anywhere on the fitting. are they just missing ? I don't see any other place for these o rings to go. any info would be greatly appreciated. my kit is hs 5157 and 5167

2013-05-30JORGE ALVAREZ: I replace seals that screws into the cylinder housing, thats the seals that wears the most, because the in and out by turning, and lifting engine,i never needed the other seal in the kit.
2013-05-30kevin englund: thanks Jorge, that's exactly what I did. so far so good.
2013-05-31RANDALL WILLIAMS: I have no O rings on #4 bleed nipples x (2)
elbow fitting #5x2 should be like LPG./flared, I never removed them.I did seal gland only #1 x 2
2013-05-31PHILLIP LAWRENCE: Kevin,
I recently installed the HS5157 seal kit on my HC5345 pivot mount steering cylinder. Actually, all I did was to replace the two seal glands & bleed the lines. I did not even disconnect the two hydraulic lines. I just saved all the O rings for posterity.
Hope this helps.
Phillip
2013-06-01WILLIAM INGRAM: I only had to replace the two end caps. I did not see in the drawings thw two o rings for the bleede
2013-05-12KEVIN ENGLUND asked: i need to re-seal my hydraulic system hc5340-42. Do I need seal kit #5157 and #5167 or just one of them ? thanks for your help

2013-05-30Anita Gilkey: The only difference is 5167 does not include the spanner wrench. If you don't have the wrench, you will need to use 5157.
2013-05-30kevin englund: thanks Anita I did need the wrench and it went pretty good.
2013-06-01STEWART ANDREWS: if you have one cylinder you need one kit. the difference between the two kits is one has a spanner wrench. if you have the wrench get the kit without one.
2013-06-10HERBERT MUNN: i used the seal kit for the cylinder at the engine. their is also a kit for the helm. easy to install at cylinder, don't scratch the piston.
2013-04-25A shopper asked: i have a sea star model hc 5345 that is leaking and need to know which kit to rebuilt this cylinder i looked can find the 5345?

2012-09-04A shopper asked: I have a 1993 Kencraft 215 challenger with the original steering. How do I know what kit to order? There arent any numbers on my ram anywhere?

2012-09-05CLARENCE NEW: I ordered my by looks, I had the one that scred off so I needed the two pin wrench. Hope that helped.
2012-07-15NORMAN B asked: would I need anyother parts for this rebuild kit ?
+Expand Answers
2012-07-16CLARENCE NEW: Did not use the rebuild kit. Returned for new cylinder, because it leaked internally. If just ends leak, rebuild kit works.
2012-07-17THOMAS DELBRIDGE: In order to generate enough torque to loosen the seal glands from the cylinder, I used a long socket wrench handle. The spanner wrench that comes with the kit has a square hole in which a socket drive can be inserted.
2012-07-17ZACH WHITSON: No, it's a pretty basic cylinder. this fixed all my seeps. I also re taped the teflon on the threaded fittings.
2012-07-18ROBERT ROEFER: Norman the kit is compleat,You may need some hydraulic steering oil.
2012-07-19RICK HONEYCUTT: no,everything you need is there, you must remove both end mounting brachets to replace the seals, I had trouble figuring out, the shaft is solid from one side to the other
2012-07-22KEVIN NUGENT: no you don't need anything else all there and very simple
2012-05-27A shopper asked: what is the guide tool for?
+Expand Answers
2012-05-29JEFFREY WATERS: this helps put the seal on the rod
2012-05-30MARCUS LYNG: the tool goes over the end of the rod covering the screw threads so the end seals don't get scratched
2012-06-21TED TYLER: Unfortunately, I never got to that point. Upon inspecting my piston rod,
I found defects in it which the directions stated that the whole hydraulic
assembly would need to be replaced. I returned the seal kit for refund
and purchased the whole assembly from Jamestown. Sorry I couldn't
help you. FYI...Jamestown customer service was fantastic on my
refund and reorder.

So easy a caveman could have done it, except the hydraulic steering ram removal.Take your time and use the proper tools or you will regret starting this project! Should be done in less than a couple of hours though.

Comments about Teleflex Hydraulic Seal Kit For Outboard Cylinders:
The hardest part was getting the end piece brackets off to the tiller tube. In my case I was replacing the Quad ring in the helm and had rented a 4" puller to remove the steering wheel. With a little help from the puller on the end piece brackets, they came off pretty quick.
