2013-02-21ROBERT PARBUS: I bought these shocks for my boats electronic box. Not hardly the same as the doors on your truck. I bought the pair and only put one on as it was then hard to close as the door on this box was only plexi-glass. 2 would have been to strong. No weight to speak of at all. If your truck canopy is a lightweight door. ( not more than 40 or so lbs) I see them working fine.
As far as the composite vs sock diameter. The best I can guess is that the ends of the rams are a composite material. Seem very strong.

2012-05-15GEORGE DOEBLER: The Attwoods are better than the originals. It takes a bit of heft to close the hatch. It would take a big wind to blow it closed with these gas springs.

2012-02-10TIM MCINTOSH: The springlift snaps on a ball stud mount. Attwood sells a spring mounting bracket and stud that if it will not fit your old mount can be used to mount the springs. In my case the old bracket worked well.
2012-02-10CLARK COOK: the small stud that was attached to your old air spring should be installed on the replacement gas spring. If you dont have your old spring the replacements parts are available with new brackets. Good Luck
2012-02-14FRANK STEEVES: The exact same way. There is a ball on a plate. The spring has a clip that pulls out. When pushed back in, the clip secures the end. Be careful not to pull the clip all the way off. It can be hard to get back on without bending it or making it too loose when pushed all the way in.

The 55# rated Atwood gas springs for my engine/bilge hatch cover in my 1989 Bayliner Ciera Sunbridge were not doing the job to the point that as a safety measure I used a boat pole to ensure that the heavy cover would not come down on my head when I was working in there. Exact part replacements were no longer available. The O.A.L. of the old shock was 19-5/8" so I hoped that the 20" 60# shock (ATT SL34605) would be close enough to work. When I initially tried to install the new springs I could not push the stroke end down enough to pop it onto the 10mm ball (at least not without getting a finger pinched along the way) nor could I get the hatch to rise up to the 20" O.A.L.when not under pressure. I had to think about it. A week later armed with a new 24" clamp I compressed the gas spring the requisite amount and popped it on. The 2nd spring on the other side of the hatch went even quicker and in 10 minutes I was done. I was a little concerned that the new springs might be too powerful and the hatch would spring open, but that has not been the case. The hatch now opens easily and stays closed when down. I no longer have to be concerned about it whacking me in the noggin when I am working in there. I am very satisfied with these springs.
