Questions & Answers about Attwood SpringLift Series Gas Springs:
2013-05-21MIKE CLEMENT asked: I have spring lift sl36-40-1 what one should I order from you?
2013-05-16ROBERT DARVILLE asked: How do you know where and what length spring you need for a new istallallation on boat hatches?
+Expand Answers
2013-05-16JON PUGH: Please keep in mind that you also need to know the weight of what the hinges are supporting. I bought ones that I thought would do it, but they are weaker than what I thought. Lesson....go up in supporting strength!
2013-04-06A shopper asked: Stuck in extended position how do i unstick?
2013-02-28LARRY KAZ asked: Hi. on the 7.5 in extended what is the measurement from centre of mounting hole to centre of other hole and a picture of this one that is attached by nut and bolt. ????? Thanks Larry
+Expand Answers
2013-03-01LES DANE: Should be 17.2" center to center.
2013-03-01Larry Kaz: Hi,the mounting holes are 5 inches apart this is a very short spring, for a trunk on a 1980 Triumph T R 7,I need 2 of them. Thanks Larry
2013-02-19IGOR KAPARCHUK asked: I need 15 inch struts for my leer canopy. These struts look like they can do a good job on about anything.Would these do the job for my truck canopy? What is the difference between Sock Composite & Diameter Blade?
+Expand Answers
2013-02-21ROBERT PARBUS: I bought these shocks for my boats electronic box. Not hardly the same as the doors on your truck. I bought the pair and only put one on as it was then hard to close as the door on this box was only plexi-glass. 2 would have been to strong. No weight to speak of at all. If your truck canopy is a lightweight door. ( not more than 40 or so lbs) I see them working fine.
As far as the composite vs sock diameter. The best I can guess is that the ends of the rams are a composite material. Seem very strong.
2013-02-07A shopper asked: Is the spring tension adjustable?
+Expand Answers
2013-02-07JEFF KOENIG: No. They are not. You need to see what weight you are trying to lift and buy accordingly
2013-02-07DALTRO DORNELES: THe one I recieved is not adjustable.
2013-02-07ROBERT WILSON: No tension is mot adjustable, the tension is stated in poundage when you buy the product.
2013-02-07BARBARA HONCHARSKI: Not that I know of
2013-02-08GEORGE DOEBLER: No. They are preset.. Very easy to install.
2012-05-13MABATECOLA M asked: I have a 3'x4' T-111 hatch. What size do I need to I need to keep it open above 90 degrees and prevent the wind from closing it. Can they have a locking mechanism?
What hardware do I need to mount them?
-Mike
+Expand Answers
2012-05-15GEORGE DOEBLER: The Attwoods are better than the originals. It takes a bit of heft to close the hatch. It would take a big wind to blow it closed with these gas springs.
2012-04-12A shopper asked: How is the spring lift measured?
+Expand Answers
2012-04-12NED RUSSELL: Measure the spring lift from center point of each end fitting.
2012-04-14LARRY CONNELL: Take the old lift and stretch it out full lenght and measure from center of the hole on on eend to the center of the hole on th eother end. There was a picture to show you how to order, because I didn't know how either.
2012-04-14FRANK MOLE: with the unit extended.............
2012-03-21A shopper asked: How do you unlock them?
+Expand Answers
2012-03-21BARON FOWLER: The gas springs do not lock. The shock stays in positive motion.
The weight of the door will close it
2012-03-23KENNETH MILLER: there is no lock. they are gas.
2012-02-29LARRY SHEPHERD asked: I have a 99 Ford F-250 short bed with a Gaylord hard cover, my shocks
are shot. they SL-26-80 any chance you guys have them?
Thanks

Comments about Attwood SpringLift Series Gas Springs:
The 55# rated Atwood gas springs for my engine/bilge hatch cover in my 1989 Bayliner Ciera Sunbridge were not doing the job to the point that as a safety measure I used a boat pole to ensure that the heavy cover would not come down on my head when I was working in there. Exact part replacements were no longer available. The O.A.L. of the old shock was 19-5/8" so I hoped that the 20" 60# shock (ATT SL34605) would be close enough to work. When I initially tried to install the new springs I could not push the stroke end down enough to pop it onto the 10mm ball (at least not without getting a finger pinched along the way) nor could I get the hatch to rise up to the 20" O.A.L.when not under pressure. I had to think about it. A week later armed with a new 24" clamp I compressed the gas spring the requisite amount and popped it on. The 2nd spring on the other side of the hatch went even quicker and in 10 minutes I was done. I was a little concerned that the new springs might be too powerful and the hatch would spring open, but that has not been the case. The hatch now opens easily and stays closed when down. I no longer have to be concerned about it whacking me in the noggin when I am working in there. I am very satisfied with these springs.
