Interlux PreKote primer is used above the waterline prior to painting topsides with Brightside polyurethane, Toplac, yacht enamels, or any one part topside finish on wood, fiberglass, and previously painted surfaces.
Pre-kote contains microspheres for superior build and hide. Microspheres also make it easier to sand.
This primer requires thinner INT-0333 (for brushing) or INT-0216 (for spraying).

Questions & Answers about Interlux Pre-Kote Primer for One-Part Finishes:
2013-04-12SCOTT LUCAS asked: I'm sanding the engine compartment on my boat and want to apply new Bilge-Kote enamel. Should I prime with Pre-Kote, something else, or no primer?
+Expand Answers
2013-04-16DONALD E JARDON: I think you might be better off if you look up the Interlux toll free number and ask their techs. They are usually very helpful and can save you a lot of extra headaches. Good luck.
2013-03-20PEHR JANSSON asked: I am building a small sailing dingy out of marine plywood using stitch and glue. So, there are areas that are wood, areas that are wood that have been painted with epoxy, there are areas that fiberglass tape laid down with epoxy, and there are areas with epoxy-based fairing compound and some areas that I faired with bondo. I have Interlux Brightside paint that I bought for this project and Pre-Kote primer as well as the fiberglass prewash. Question, do I use the Pre-Kote primer or should I use the Epoxy Pre-Kote primer?
+Expand Answers
2013-03-21DOUG BELL: You can use the epoxy pre coat over the fiberglas tape and epoxy areas and use the pre-kote over bare wood or two-part epoxy based primers.
2013-03-21STEVE SANFORD: Pehr~
From my experience, I'm sure you'll be fine with the "regular" Pre-Kote Primer. As you no doubt know, you always need to remove the "amine blush" from fresh epoxy. I usually sand it thoroughly and then wash down with soapy water.
I have been very satisfied with the combination of Pre-Kote followed by Brightside.
All the best,
Steve
2013-03-22DAVID KRICHTEN: I used the Pre-Coat on my stitch and glue kayak over epoxy before applying Britesides. I applied two coats with sanding in between. Worked well, looks great. Good luck
2013-03-18A shopper asked: Can I us two part epoxy over precoat ?
+Expand Answers
2013-03-20CHARLES THOMPSON: I use Pre-Kote as a topsides primer. I don't think two-part epoxy needs a primer. I use two-parts below the waterline and one-part above. In my own experience, the one-part paints yield a nicer topsides finish. Hope that helps.
2013-03-20HOWARD SPRUIT: never tried, don't know.
Try asking Interlux.
2013-03-20JOSHUA SWAN: Two part epoxy is really meant to be used before the finishing process, so I am not sure what is is you've got to do. Maybe make a previously unnoticed repair or backtrack through the primer coat to address something local. in that case, I'd sand back the affected area, attend to the spot in need, and then spot prime and sand until it's caught back up with the original primer coat. If it is some big task you are planning on tackling that requires epoxy now, I'd maybe take a step back and evaluate your working sequence. I hope this helps and good luck with it. no matter what, there are always several right approaches.
sincerely,
Josh

2013-01-25MARC STANN asked: I have interlux perfection on fiberglass that has been sanded down to dull. Can I spray over this with prekote one part and then spray interlux single stage over it? Or do I need to sand off all the old paint completely? Thanks for your help.Marc
+Expand Answers
2013-01-25TODD PARMINGTON: Marc, in nearly all cases you can use 1 part primer/paints over 2 part finishes. Going the other way (2 part over 1 part) is generally looking for trouble due to the solvents in the 2 part. Just be certain the old finish is sanded to at least 150 and wiped down well. Hope this helps, Todd
2013-01-25MATTHEW DANZIGER BRIM ELECTRONICS: The interlux people helped me during my project long ago. I didn't spray, just used rollers for the pre-kote and brightside yellow paint. I remember they said to use a layer of pre-kote, and then a half & half, then two coats of paint was best for my application. I haven't needed to repaint, since I keep the boat in the garage.
2013-01-25JAMES SALISBURY: Marc, I used it over new fiberglass for two projects. Brushed on, not sprayed. Worked great.
Jim
2013-01-26DONALD E JARDON: I'm not sure. I think I would call Interlux and ask one of their techs. If the surface is already painted, you can't use the 2 part products over it.
I'm guessing it has to be sanded completely BUT--
These paints are too expensive not to ask the techs at Interlux and too time consuming not to be sure it's done right. I've called them before and they are very helpful. Good Luck, Don
2013-01-26ROBERT CHAYER: I have used pre-kote primer on three boats, all of them wood hulls. I sand the existing paint until it is dull then use pre-kote, sand it lightly then apply the finsh coat. I have never sanded all the existing paint off. It seems like a waste of time to me.
2013-01-19GARY S asked: will adhesive used in carpeting adhere to pre-kote?

2012-10-26A shopper asked: can i use this on a plastic canoe?
+Expand Answers
2012-10-30Nathan Fournier: It won't give the proper bond required but if you use G/Flex Epoxy first "WSY-650-32", sand and clean well, then yes you can use this product, followed by Interlux Brightside or another one-part paint. You will also have increased strength and waterproofing along with high durability. Otherwise it is designed for fiberglass, wood, aluminum and other metals only, thank you.
2012-10-31NATHANIEL FOWLER: I did use this on a plastic mold boat but it seemed to crack and peel....whatever you use be sure to sand it super well with at least 150 or 80 grit sand paper.
Thanks,
Nate
Revivalboatworks
2012-10-31JOSEPH FINDEISS: Plastic or fiberglass? I used it on a fiberglass canoe and it work great. But plastic? Maybe if you sanded it in successively finer grits it could work, but don't take my word for it.
2012-11-09Nathan Fournier: In response to "NATHANIEL FOWLER": A plastic mold is a different story, unless you properly remove all of the mold release agents successfully with a proper solvent designed specifically to remove wax and mold release agents first, followed by some sanding to remove any tackiness left over by the resin, then clean again with a solvent, it will bond properly, thank you.

2012-10-24A shopper asked: how do you tint the primer?
+Expand Answers
2012-10-24ROBERT ATKINSON: I didn't. It is a white primer which I covered with two finish coats, including a dark blue. No problems. I see no need for tinting.
2012-10-25HOWARD SPRUIT: I have no idea.
I have never had the need to!
If you find out please let me know.
2012-07-23GEORGE CODER asked: I am using Top Kote under BriteSide with a non slip additive, do I need to sand the topKote before applying the BrightSide?
+Expand Answers
2012-07-30PETER DROBNY: yes , just a bit to even smoth out brush lines but with a non skid additive on top I suppose no if a fare surface isnt required / visible.
2012-07-30John Good: I usually sand Pre-Kote with 80 grit, then put two or three coats of finish paint on, sanding between coats with 120-220 grit. I also use multiple coats of Pre-Kote, sanding between with 80 grit. The more Pre-Kote you use, the less finish coat you have to use. But bear in mind that I have a wooden boat, so I am generally looked on as completely nuts.
Hope this helps.
2012-05-28JEFFREY FACKETT asked: what is a good primer to put down on deck before useing kiwi non skid ?
+Expand Answers
2012-05-29TIM HUNTER: Sorry Jeffrey, I have not used this primer. I bought it, but exchanged it for a two-part primer for use on a boat hull. good luck with your project.
2012-05-29HOWARD SPRUIT: In order to answer that question I would have to know what "KIWI" nonskid is.
I suggest that you contact Interlux and Kiwi.
Howard
2012-05-29JOHN BYRNES: Pre-Kote primer is great to use for one part paints but I dont know about kiwi non skid.
2012-05-30ROWELL GREENE: I've used Pre Kote with Polyurethane paints and Top-Lac. I mix small amounts 2/3 primer or paint 1/3 Penetrol. If the mixture still look too thick I add more Penetrol. Penetrol reduces the surface tension of the primer or paint, so it flows out and stays smooth. Thick primer will retain brush marks which are then difficult to sand smooth. Brush marks in the primer will strike through the top coat.
2012-05-30GEORGE ANGELIS: I have used Pre-Kote for years on my wood boat it is easy to use and makes a good base for the one part Polyurethane and 333 brushing thiner

Comments about Interlux Pre-Kote Primer for One-Part Finishes:
I used to undercoat a new non-skid job on a Pearson 30 (Pearson swirls). It even covered some black showing through the non-skid. You need to work fast as it dries quickly. Used on day temps in the 70s and low humidity. It could cover more evenly, though. But I'm pleased with the result.

Comments about Interlux Pre-Kote Primer for One-Part Finishes:
Following directions, this product performed extremely well. Filled minor imperfections and made a great prime coat for the Interlux Topside one-part Polyurethane paint applied (2 coats) as the finish coat. I actually primed and saned the previously painted wood 3 times. I sanded with 120 grit, again 120 grit, then 180 after the 3rd prime. Results excellent. Take your time. Do not apply too thickly.

Used on cabin ceiling. Spread well and filled small imperfections. Sanded easy. I rolled it on and had to watch for lines of thick paint from roller edge. Don't put too much in roller tray at a time because it thickens fast in open container.

This primer is amazing!! Good coverage and fast drying. I have been doing a lot of body work to an 82 performance bass boat and decided to paint due to the extent of body work done. I used a foam roller for application, sanding between coats. By the time I was ready for paint it was flawless!! Great product. Definitely worth the $$.

Comments about Interlux Pre-Kote Primer for One-Part Finishes:
This was my third boat building project and first one using Interlux. For the other two projects, I used another popular brand. While the other brands worked well, the Interlux Pre-Kote and Brightside provided a smoother finish and so far is more durable. The primer and paint went on smooth and covered well. The only complaint I have is the strong, strong odor. I did use a respirator while applying, but the odor lasted for days around the shop even with the doors open and fans going.
