These hollow splicing fids are the easiest tool for splicing three strand rope line with clean results. Insert the stainless steel fid like a marlin spike to break open the weave. The wedge shape spreads the weave more as it is inserted further, clearing space for the strand to pass underneath. The tubular shape guides the strand being passed under the tuck.

2012-07-13STEVE BARBER asked: on the hollow fid 1/8 to 1/2... how do you use on double strand when making and end loop???? The fid seems too big for the jacket. Is there any instructions on using this type of fid... I do see the instructions on double strand and they are using a Samson closed fid... is this my problem -- wrong tool for the job or not?

2012-07-13BRAD ALEXANDER: This fid was much to big for my application. I'm not sure what i would even use it for.
I was using it with 1/8 amsteel blue rope attempting to make whoopie slings for hammocks. I resorted to buying craft wire that worked like a charm as a fid with this type of rope.

We use these fids for splicing the 3 strand and 8 strand ropes we manufacture. Since we don't manufacture double braids I can't exactly speak with authority on how double braids are spliced, but I do think you are correct in thinking that you need a closed, or hollow fid. There is a New England Rope uppload video on youtube that seemed very helpful. I found the demo video by googling "splicing double braid rope". Best of Luck - RS
