2012-11-15Karri Boyer: I'm curious about the same, sqft, except for a living room cleared down to the studs. About 400 sqft, how much borate should I buy?
2013-03-07E S: Standard preventative application is of 10% or 15% solutions; to achieve ~10% solution, mix one lb of powder to one gallon warm water and agitate. Coverage of 1 gallon of 10% solution = ~100 sq. ft. Best to spray the wood down lightly, let it sit until the solution is absorbed, and spray it down again; repeat until the solution is used up. Such topical application is for unpainted/unfinished wood only; painted or finished wood requires injections (drilling and filling). If you're lucky enough to have an old house, heartwood, due to its high resin/oil content absorbs aqueous solutions (and thus the suspended borates) less readily than sapwood, but happily is also less susceptible to rot and insect infestation.

2012-02-28TOM THEOBALD: All borate compounds become boric acid and are stable. Wastage by contamination is more of a concern. Keep it dry and contained.
I use an ounce per gallon in a lawn sprayer and hit all exposed and hidden areas in my wooden hull.
The low toxicity of boric acid makes it safe for people to use in enclosed spaces as long as they avoid eye and skin contact as much as practicable.
2012-03-05JOYCE SILLER: The System Three People told me that as long as the borate is kept dry it has infinite shelf life. Mixing takes time because the borate is slow to dissolve. I always made a saturated solution and applied it with a brush wearing gloves but I;m not sure the gloves are necessary. Then it dries the surface will show tiny crystals and that suggest to me that I got enough on the wood. I used the borate powder with the borate rods and since the repairs are only now gogin through their first winter, it isn't clear yet how well everything will hold up. The repairs also used the System Three epoxy puddy which seems quite sound. Again, not enough time.

Comments about System Three Board Defense Borate Powder:
I had a seriously rotted 200-year-old beam that I applied it to. I followed mixing and application directions which were very clear. This was the first step in restoring the beam. It took two days to dry because of the location. I followed it with application of the epoxy. Next will be filling the beam and inserting reinforced iron bar. Your site provided me with the most complete information, both video and written. Comparing all the products that I found on the internet, I selected this because of price and informational support. Cutomer service was also very good.
