Fill-it contains an aerospace adhesion-enhancing additive to give it aggressive and tenacious adhesion to wood, cement and a wide variety of materials. It is reinforced with glass fibers for extra tensile strength. In fact all of the solid fillers or reinforcing additives are chemically engineered glass of one form or another. This gives the best long-term stability and moisture resistance.
Contains the Dual Synergistic Catalyst technology to give a longer working time and a shorter full cure time. This technology also ensures an absolutely dependable full chemical cure at temperatures as low as 28 deg F (-2 deg C).

Questions & Answers about Smiths Fill-It Epoxy Filler:
2013-04-21A shopper asked: can it be used below waterline?
+Expand Answers
2013-05-09PAUL MILLER: The Smith website leads you to believe it can.
I have used it below the waterline and all's well after 2 years.
2013-05-09HENRY CYGAN: Yes - but you must be certain to employ best practices to prepare the rotted sections and also ensure that proper caulking, hull finishing and painting are practiced. The preparation details are we;;-presented in the psroduct literature. The rest is covered in hundreds (if not thousands) of books and articles. I normally refer to Wooden Boat.
2013-05-09SAMUEL MCROBERTS: I don't have any experience with below waterline use. With proper preparation and protective paint finish, I see no reason it should not work well underwater.
Recommend removal of rotted or loose wood followed by preparation of area with Smiths CPES Clear Penetrating Epoxy Sealer. The CPES must saturate the wood fibers and will provide the decay resistance and additional adhesion needed for good bonding to Fill-It. Overall, this is a great filler with good workability before and after curing.
2013-05-09CHARLES SMITH: I did on the rudder of my Endevour 37 and then coated it with Interlux Ablitive Bottom Paint
2013-05-10JAMES BECKER: Smith's does not specifically state that it can be used below the waterline so I personally would not do that. On the other hand they do not specifically prohibit it so it is your choice. I've used it on above waterline products and been very satisfied.
2013-03-25A shopper asked: can you color this product?
+Expand Answers
2013-03-27WILLIAM MONTGOMERY: Sadly, the boat I was working on was a much bigger project than I expected and I never used the product.
2013-03-27CLIFFORD SOWELL: Smith supplies custom colors on very large orders. Since it cures and sands readily, painting is not a problem so I did not need to color. I think it would be difficult to control the color exactly without a lot of trial and error.
2013-03-27DAVID HAIDERER: Found this to be a great product to restore deteriorated wood.
Guys were very satisfied with the workability, sanding etc.
Pretty sure you could mix a pigment into the epoxy. Jamestown
sells the pigments---
Hope this helps.
2013-05-09SAMUEL MCROBERTS: Most epoxy based products need a final paint or varnish to provide UV protection for outdoor use. If you are using Fill-It where sun exposure is likely, I would paint over filler after drying and sanding to match the surrounding areas rather than adding colorants or pigments to filler.
2013-02-27A shopper asked: Can this be used in temperatures down to freezing?
+Expand Answers
2013-02-28CHARLES SMITH: No below about 60 it will not cure
2013-02-28HENRY CYGAN: I utilized this compound in a heated structure - say 68F - and maintained that temperature for 24+ hours. I have no experience in 32F conditions. My recommendation - call the manufacturer.
HFC
2013-02-28BETH ROGERS: I have and it seems fine.
2013-02-28DAVID ABBOTT: Don't know about use in low temp. I work in hangar that I heat when I am there. Overnight temp goes down to or below freezing - still works fine at 50-60 next time I need it.
2013-03-01MARK GINSBERG: Do not think it works in low temperature, needs to be at least 45 or 50.
2013-03-01JOHN BEIDL: Information on Fill-It-Epoxy Filler can be found on the Internet. Links are not permitted in my replay, just do a search on smithandcompany as an org and you find the site and a link to the Fill-It-Epoxy information.
It can be used in cold temperatures but a 28 degrees the cured to sand time is 3 days and the full cure time is 10 days. Hope you are not in a hurry.
2013-03-02MICHAEL RECTOR: I've used it in pretty cold temps without any problems. Not sure if it was down to freezing or not.
2012-05-30RUSSELL BARSTOW asked: can this product be used over painted surfaces?
+Expand Answers
2012-05-30FRED PEEK: I was satisfied with this filler and used it over scraped painted surfaces. Great adhesive properties. Filled dry rot pockets with good results.
2012-05-30CRAIG LUTON: I don't see why not as long as the paint is stuck tight to the wood. It will stick to the paint and the paint is stuck to the wood. I have only used it over unpainted wood.
Craig
2012-05-30DAVID ALLEN: I've only used it over wood that I have pre-treated with CPES. Since it adheres to the epoxy sealer I would guess it would adhere to painted surfaces.
2012-05-30JAMES SMITH: No it would not be advisable. You haven't said what you are filling, but lets say you are filling wood. You remove the non pourous paint with a grinder or whatever because you want the epoxy filler to soak into the wood and then harden. Paint is a filler and fillers don't stick well to other fillers. In fact they usually fight with each other because they are non compatable.
2012-05-31DAVID ABBOTT: Yes, but be sure to rough sand surface to provide opportunity for grip.
2012-05-31JAMES BECKER: I would not use it over painted surfaces if I could possibly help it as the epoxy will then just be attached to the paint and if the paint fails, then the epoxy comes off. If removing the paint is not an option, I would sand it aggresively and then apply the epoxy filler.
2012-05-31HENRY CYGAN: I would not recommend it. The first step in the process is to bare all wood and provide the no-rot chemical with a base. This application has two purposes: 1) to stop further rot; 2) to set up a firm base for the application of the filler. It is necessary that all loose wood fibers and coatings be removed to allow the chemical processes to work properly - much like any application of epoxies, resins and hi-tech fibers to boat construction.
Having followed the instructions for the entire psdrocess, I could not be more pleased with the results.
2012-06-05JOHN BEIDL: This product was designed to be used on top of Smith's Clear Penetrating Epoxy Sealer so I "think" it would probably adhere to painted surfaces provide all of the loose paint was removed and the surface roughened with 80 grit or coarser sand paper.
When I used it there were some areas that still had latex paint and/or primer that I covered. I used 80 grit paper to rough up the painted surfaces and it has held up for over 2 years.
2012-02-20A shopper asked: I am restoring an antique runabout and need to fill in a few small areas that were damaged like scrapes, gouges, small chips from the wood. Does this filler take a stain? I would like to just fill in the scrape and then stain it to match the wood.
+Expand Answers
2012-02-21JAMES RIGNEY: Hello I have used this fil-it kit many times on these old runabouts it will take a stain but it will still be visible as a repair, if possoble test on an area that will not be seen first. Be sure to use Smiths 2 part liquid epoxy sealer before aplying the filler( and read all the instructions)
Jim
2012-02-21HENRY CYGAN: In my experience, Snith's does not take a stain. It is ideal for taking a paint finish, but the intense white color and density of the final product, preceeded by the amber epoxy sealer, does not lend itself to stained finish services. It may be possible to stain the final product prior to application - and I beieve that I read something about that in the Smith's literature - but you should check directly.
For my purposes - restoration of an H-14, Smith's was a perfect solution.
2012-02-23JEFFREY BEVERSTOCK: My experience with this product involved restoring rotted parts of a runabout's splashrails, which I subsequently painted. It was my observation of the filler that it would not take a stain or would be noticeably diiferent in appearance from the surrounding wood.
2012-01-25GEORGE EBERSTADT asked: Would this epoxy work well to patch a dented teak coaming? It'll be continuously exposed to the sun. I'll also want to paint it to match the teak - how does it take paint? Many thanks.
+Expand Answers
2012-01-25JOHN BEIDL: I used this product over 2 years ago to repair damaged outside window sills on the south-east and south-west side of my house.
The wood was treated with Smith's Clear Penetrating Epoxy Sealer (CPES) to prevent further rot (should not be needed in your case). The sills were then repaired with Fill-It Epoxy and primed with an oil based primer. Top coat was latex exterior semi-gloss trim paint.
The sills have been exposed to the hot Carolina sun for over 2 years and are still in excellent condition.
2012-01-30George Eberstadt: Thanks William. Much appreciated.
2012-01-30George Eberstadt: Sorry, I meant John. Doh.
2012-01-25DIANN YEAROUT: George, first of all without knowing what a teak coaming is, I would not know what to say. I used mine on a wooden deck that was water rotted and it not only sealed it but is still holding. Painting over it is easy. It acts like the wood except it doesn't soak in but coverage is good.
Hope this helps, Diann
ps, I use it on almost anthing that needs a filler, like chips or dents even used it on a broken knife handle filling in and letting dry and carveing it to match. Great stuff.
2012-01-30George Eberstadt: Thanks Diann. Much appreciated.
2012-01-25WILLIAM HANDY: I like the product a lot for smoothing and hole filling. It is strong and hard when dry; good for filling after cleaning up a rotten sot. I have never had trouble painting over it. I'm not sure if you'd be able to cover and match with teak oil.
2012-01-30George Eberstadt: Thanks William. Much appreciated.
2012-01-25DAVID ABBOTT: George, I used it to fill in a seam that opened in a fiberglass roadster body. It patched without leaving any seam, took sanding to match body surface, and after painting is invisible. Has exposure to sun, but not continuously. Worked better than I had hoped. Dave
2012-01-30George Eberstadt: Thanks David. Much appreciated.
2012-01-25CAROL ANDERSON: Not being a boat person, I'm not sure what a dented teak coaming is. But the answer is that this filler does have color to it, and it dries off-white, I believe. It will take paint very well; as I recall, it recommends waiting until half-way through the curing process, and then using a primer and then the top coat. I've actually had great success with painting over this--repaired rotting T-9 siding on my garage about three years ago, painted over it, and it's still as solid as it was the day I finished the repair. Hope this helps.
2012-01-30George Eberstadt: Thanks Carol. Much appreciated.
2012-01-26FRED PEEK: Not sure of exposure to paint. I patched rottted area of roof sheathing and it ainted well, but was not exposed to direct sun. Happy with product.
2012-01-30George Eberstadt: Thanks Fred. Much appreciated.
2011-09-23A shopper asked: Hi,
Is smiths 2 part filler required for using a 2 part primer and then 2 part paint
??
+Expand Answers
2011-09-23JAMES RIGNEY: Hello, it is recomended to pre prime with smiths two part epoxy , however it is not necessary
JIM
2011-09-23TOM LEATH: I just used some the other night. It mixes easily and well. Sands easily.
However, I do not know whether it is required with 2 part primers and paints.
2011-09-23CRAIG LUTON: No. Make your surface is clean and before applying your primer.
2011-09-24MARK GINSBERG: There is a two part epoxy primer. You can paint it with any paint.
2011-09-24ROBERT ALANKO: I bought the product but have not used it yet. Sorry, I can't answer your question.
The thing I noticed on the container is that it is a wood filler. I assume from the ordering information that it can also be used for filling fiberglass blemishes. I plan to use it to fill a few chips along the side rail of a Sunfish/Laser Day Sailer before installing rub rails.
2011-09-24STANLEY SCHROEDER: After Smith's filler has cured, I apply 2 coats of Lowe's Duramax satin exterior paint which doesn't require any primer to be applied first.
2011-09-24JEFFREY BEVERSTOCK: Regarding my experience with Smith's Epoxy Filler, I used it to restore 2 badly rotten splash rails on my 14" Penn Yann. I then used and Interlux one-part primer, followed by Brightside one-part enamel. They look great! Hope this helps.
2011-09-25JOHN BEIDL: The filler is only required it you have damaged wood that requires repair before painting. If your surface is already smooth and in good condition you do not need it.
2011-09-25JIM BOYD: No, I used single stage primer over this product and it worked great.
2011-09-26SAM SECREST: I do not think it is required for the paints, you mention. It is an easy product to use, sands easily and takes paint easily. I used it to fill the space between a wooden bow plate and the fiberglass deck. I have also used it to fill areas on the deck where deck hardware had been removed. I have painted over those spots using Interlux precoat and Brightside one part paint.
2011-06-29JIM HUETTENMOSER asked: I'm installing a new through hull inducer in a cored hull. Need what's being described as casting epoxy (???) any reccomendations?also need a marine sealant Life seal or 3M - Fast cure 5200.
Do you have??
+Expand Answers
2011-06-29MARK GINSBERG: I used to repair area of a barn door where I removed rot. Worked very well. Not sure how it would hold up in a marine environment.
2011-06-29JOHN BEIDL: I used this product to repair weather damaged exterior window sills. It did the job very well and it was fairly easy to sand smooth. I did this repair about 18 months ago and so far all is well.
The Fill-It Epoxy was applied after the wood had been treated with Smiths Clear Penetrating Epoxy Sealer.
I don't know if this product is considered a "casting epoxy".
If your planned use is to just seal the transducer to the hull, Fill-It should do the job provided that the transducer is friendly to epoxy.
John
2011-06-30DAN PULEIO C/O DOCTORS BILLING CLER: Fill-It iws a great product which I have used extensivly with great results above the waterline. I don't know that it's rated for underwater use and would sugggest research. As for 5200 - it's perfect for your job.
2011-06-30KURT LENTS: Don't think I would call Smiths Fill-It a casting epoxy. I'm thinking you want something pourable, which this is not.
As far as a marine sealant, 3M fast cure 5200 is awesome. I would consider it permanent as it is a bear to get off down the road.
2011-06-30CRAIG LUTON: I have not used a casting epoxy but I have used Fill-It epoxy filler to repair our log handrails. It works like body putty on cars. I would recomend this product for wood repair. Thank you, Craig

This product works as stated. I'm using it to patch cracks and fill holes in wood trim around the house. It's very easy to use and has a long pot life so the work does not have to be rushed. I use a flexible thick plastic sheet to mix the two parts and a paddy knife to apply it with. I ware plastic gloves while applying the product and clean it up with lacquer thinner when done. I will buy this product again when needed.

Comments about Smith and Co Smiths Fill-It Epoxy Filler:
I've used this product on wood rot and damage over the years as a painting contractor. I ordered this product from Jamestown Distributers as the manufacturer, Smith and Company does not take credit cards and was working on a time schedule for the homeowner. The failure to indicate that this product was back ordered by JD in any communication is unacceptable. I attempted to contact the supervisor and left a message to the facts and asked for overnight shipping to expedite delivery and never received a return call.
All in all, the time from ordering to delivery was 26 days. I recommend finding an alternative company or work with the manufacturer.
I'm sure that this review will be all inclusive to insure any integrity of Jamestown Distributors.

I'm a Paint contractor and use Fill-It to repair rotted, chipped and damaged wood trim. The great thing about it is, it is so hard and durable yet it is very easy to sand. I trim any excess off with a utility knife then sand smooth. It also bonds extremely well and once its sanded and painted you would never know you used it.

Comments about Smith and Co Smiths Fill-It Epoxy Filler:
I was very pleased with the performance of this product. I am a home owner and have a wood sliding glass door. Living in the Midwest with our sevre winters, the moisture of the snow rotted out part of the bottom frame of my sliding glass door. Replacement of the door would have cost me over $1000.00! By using this product, I was able to preserve the wood and prolong the replacement of my slider. After painting the repaired area, it esthetically has a perfect look to the rest of my windows, plus it certainly saved me a lot of money! I would definitely recommend this product for outdoor use, especially on wood i.e. decks, fences, wood house trim, etc.

This is great stuff. Tthis is incredibly durable and easy to use. It needs to be top coated but by painting another layer of CPES, it bonds very well to any paint. Comments about Smith and Co Smiths Fill-It Epoxy Filler:
This is an excellent filler with good strength and good workability for structural repairs to wood. It is thick when uncured and won't sag for vertical applications. Note: this product does not work well as a general cosmetic fairing putty or sanding sealer because it is too heavy to spread thinly and the glass fibers make it too difficult to sand.
