Questions & Answers about Kevlar Tape 3 inches wide:
2012-10-02KENNETH DEFFENBAUGH asked: how thick is the material ?
+Expand Answers
2012-10-02ROBERT GEBERT: I actually bought the 4" but it is probably the same thickness. This is a difficult question to answer. The material is substantial and tough but not thick. It can easily be wetted with epoxy for repairs. Maybe Jamestown would send you a sample?
2012-10-02TIMOTHY MORISETTE: It's about 1/8 inch thick, or maybe a little less. Also, it is not "tape" in the sense of being sticky. It has no adhesive. It worked great for my kevlar canoe repairs of cracks.
2012-10-02KEN GORDON: As best I can measure about .010-.013 it is hard to mic as it is a bit compressible. Soaked properly with Epoxy Resin and cured, I would think would double that thickness. Just guessing though.
2012-10-02DAVID WARDEN: It is about 1mm thick.
2012-10-02ROBERT JOHNSON: The tape is about a 1/16" of an inch thick.
2012-10-02ROBERT SMITH: I pinched 8 layers in a digital caliper and measured 1.5mm
1.5 / 8 = .1875mm thick
.1875 / 25.4 = 0.00738 inches
2012-10-02STANLEY MCCUMBER: Kenneth.. In answer to your question about how thick the Kevlar Tape 3 inches wide is... i would say it may be just a slight bit thinner or the same thickness as the fiberglass tape you buy in all the kits. Very pliable, but very tough to cut unless you are using good sharp shears. A knife will only tare it. Very strong in fact i used it to support a weak transom on my boat. Hope this helps out. I would give it a 4.9 star rating. 5 Star If they had said something about how tough it was to cut.
2012-10-03THEODORE SHULSEN: Three ply. It worked great.
2012-03-02JIM KELLOGG asked: Wondering if the tape will stick to plastic Old Town Canoes without peeling off?
+Expand Answers
2012-03-13ALEXANDER JORDAN: This is not adhesive backed 'tape'. This is meant to be used as reinforcement in a laminate layup with an adhesive like epoxy.
2012-03-13KEN GORDON: Jim; this tape has no glue, it is designed to be used to laminate with Two part Epoxy, like West System 105/207. You must also purchase special Kevlar shears to cut it, Your sharpest knives or scissors will not cut it.. It is the material used to make bullet-proof vests, and as such will make very strong repairs. Call Old town and find out the exact material type your canoe is made from, then contact West System Tech Support to see what Epoxy they advise, and technique to bond properly.Fiberglass tape is a bit easier to work with IMHO, but Kevlar is the strongest.Properly applied a herd of stampeding Bison could not tear it off.
2012-03-13ROBERT SMITH: There is no adhesive included. It is only a strip of kevlar fabric.
2012-03-13JOHN SPRINKMAN: It's not tape like duct tape.it's just kevlar cloth which is seamed on each side.I used it on cedarstrip and kevlar canoes i made with epoxy.Epoxy won't stick to poly canoes under stress for very long,ABS canoes i don't know.
2012-03-13ROBERT GEBERT: I haven't used this tape yet but it is not adhesive. It must be epoxied into place. Not a difficult job, but much more than a simple stick on.
2012-03-14CHUCK REYNOLDS: The Kevlar tape sold by Jamestown adheres well to Old Town Trippers - but if you have one of the Discovery models, you'll need to contact Old Town customer service for additional information on how to repair the polyethylene plastic (requires pre-heating with a torch, risking melting of the surrounding material . . . . messy stuff). All of the various Kevlar and carbon fiber materials adhere nicely to the Tripper's ABS plastic (be sure to sand and clean the surface first).
2012-03-14ROBERT GOROSIN: I AM SORRY JIM, I USED THE KEVLAR TAPE ON A DIFFERENT PURPOSE. I USED IT AS A LINING ON A 1/4" METAL AND IT WORKED OUT GREAT, I DON'T KNOW ON OLD TOWN CANOES THOUGH.

2012-02-03RICARDO GOMEZ asked: How many degrees in tempature does this item resist to?
+Expand Answers
2012-02-06KEITH FREITER: Im sorry I dont know the answer to the question. In fact I dont actually remember buying the product, but I may have purchase it for some one else.
sorry.
2012-02-06KEN GORDON: As far as I know, any possible temperature extreem encountered on a boat is no problem. I patched my Kevlar/Glass hull and have had it out on blazing hot days, and in water just above freezing. I used West System Epoxy. You will need Kevlar Shears to cut it , Knives and regular shears won't touch it.What application are you planning?
2011-10-11A shopper asked: Confirm there is no adhesive applied to this kevlar tape?
+Expand Answers
2011-10-11Ryan L: There are no adhesives applied to our kevlar tape.
Bought this to do economical skid plates on a canoe. The cost was about 1/3 what a single skid plate kit cost and I got enough material do do 9 plates. So the value was absolutely there. However the kevlar is much much thinner than a typical skid plate. It was easy to apply and fit pretty well and held fast to the canoes but durability was an issue. We use our canoes pretty hard each year and even tho we were only landing on sandy beaches they didn't last a whole summer season before wearing thru the kevlar. I'll try again next season doubling up on the amount kevlar stacking 2-3 layers high and see if that makes a difference.

Comments about Kevlar Tape 3 inches wide:
I did extensive pricing research before purchasing. Not much cheaper than others, but was still the best value to me. I used it to add skid plates to two separate canoes. You can purchase kits from many places to do this, however they are more expensive.
