Circa 1850 Stain'n Varnish can be applied onto bare, stained or finished wood. Use Circa 1850 Furniture Cleaner to remove dirt and polish. Sand wood surface with fine sandpaper. With a lint-free cloth spread a generous coat of Stain'n Varnish over the surface and wipe off excess immediately. Rub evenly in the direction of the grain. Wait 8 hours then smooth lightly with very fine steel wool. Using a cloth slightly dampened with Stain'n Varnish, rub lightly with quick full length strokes in the direction of the grain. Continue until you don't feel any drag on the cloth, and the surface is smooth.

Questions & Answers about Circa 1850 Stain 'n Varnish:
2013-02-13BARBARA EPSTEIN asked: Would this product be suitable for new kitchen cabinets and is a wood conditioner recommended? thank you
+Expand Answers
2013-02-18PETER KRAMER: I think you would be better using just a penetrating stain to get the color you are after and then protecting that with a clear varnish.
2013-02-18MICHAEL DREW: Hi Barbara, this product is for marine use or on boats, they may have a different product for home use. There are some wood conditioner at home depot and other hard ware stores just ask when you get there. Hope this helps make.
2013-02-18DEBRA DENT: I am using the product to darken the wood on my boat. If your cabinets have a finish you will likely have to strip them for the color of the varnish to really make a difference. The product is relatively easy to use but ensure that you wipe it down fully because any area that is left (ie finger prints- or a swipe of color) is hard to remove once it has dried. I ended up doing two top coats of varnish on top of it. I am also refinishing my kitchen cabinets and bought the teak color but the present finish even stripped, I would need three or four good coats to cover it and eventually went with polyshade by Minwax (not an easy product to use on cabinets )
Hope this helps.
2013-02-19MICHAEL CLAUDON: We do not use it as a final finish. It's just not tough or hard enough to withstand water flowing over a wooden boat. Rather, we use it as a base coat or in mixtures of several colors to match new wood to old. But we then varnish over it.
I do not think it can withstand the inevitable abuse and scrubbing kitchen cabinetry must endure. If it were me, I'd go with a filler stain applied to raw wood sanded to no finer a grit than 120. (Sanding to too fine a grit makes it tough for the stain to penetrate the wood fibers.)
Let the stain work for at least 15 minutes and then scrub and scrub with cheese cloth until everything sitting on top of the wood has been removed.
Then apply multiple coats of varnish.
2013-02-21JAMES AND HULDA BACHMAN-NEEB: I used this semi-gel stain on a home-crafted bookcase composed of raw poplar. I applied it directly onto the well-sanded wood surface, and I have trusted the added gel varnish to provide the necessary protective surface coat. So far that has appeared to work out satisfactorily.
To new kitchen cabinets, more vulnerable to moisture and stains, you would probably want to finish off (over the stain n' varnish) with a harder, more impervious surface coat, perhaps a clear, vitreous varnish, polyurethane, or some such. I cannot advise you on what to use here, for I have never done kitchen (or bathroom) woodwork with natural finishes. By all means, get recommendations from an expert paint store adviser.
Good luck!
2012-08-08STEVEN HORNISH asked: is there a more complete chart on colors available?

2012-08-08JOHANNE BOSSE-BRUGMANS: Hi, I think there is 5 ou 6 tints available, but cannot remember exactly each color. If you go to the hardware store, they normally have samples of the Circa Stain right beside the actual containers.

2012-06-13A shopper asked: I'm refinishing an old mahogany boat. It is sanded and l'm ging tomseal it with CPES which reqiures an oild based stain to bond.mis 1850 oil based?
+Expand Answers
2012-06-13JOHN MYLLYNEN: Stain 'n Varnish is an oil-based polyurethane with various color tints and shades, very gel-like composition, and probably best suited for interior applications. i would not use it for marine use exterior applications.I think I might rather use an oil-based gel stain followed by three coats of marine grade spar varnish on a mahogany boat.

2012-06-14JOHANNE BOSSE-BRUGMANS: It contains petroleum distilates, so I'm not sure if it contains oil. I used lighter fluid to clean up the little mess it did on my brushes. works great. Overall the stain is excellent and does an excellent job. I did use a varnish to cover it up once it was dried to protect the wood even more.
2012-03-20A shopper asked: Hello DIY: I have Merriallt cabinetry (cheapest of that line) in a light maple finish in bathrooms. I would like to attempt to make the finish darker so I don't have to buy new cabinetry to match an upcoming tile change. My husband says that the varnish will not work well on the veneer over composite drawer fronts and cabinet sides as the "finish" is essentially cellophane tape and the varnish would make the surface bubble up over time. Can anyone give me opinions or experiences to help me either chose this product to stain my current cabinets or save my money and buy new cabinets? Thanks! JK in Alexandria VA

2012-03-20JAMES AND HULDA BACHMAN-NEEB: My response can only be my opinion, for I have never tried applying stain or varnish over Merriault surfaces. I am afraid that neither stain nor varnish would work at all, for that cellophane surface is totally non-absorbent. The stain/varnish might well cause the surface to bubble up, but varnish would not, in any event, change the color tone on cellphane tape. I don't know of any application or anything that would achieve that purpose. I am afraid the customer will have to buy new cabinets.

2012-03-21MICHAEL CLAUDON: Independent of the surface material, and I suspect that your husband is spot on about trying to put a penetrating finish over it, Stain n' Varnish is not what you want.
First, since it is a penetrating (stain) finish, it needs a surface that, well, it can penetrate, which your cabinets do not offer it.
Then, when you read further on the can's label, you will discover that it is really not a finish at all, as the company recommends another product - another varnish - that must be applied over this one if it is to have any durability.
Finally, my guess is that the "wood grain" surface on your cabinets is entirely artificial, so I am not sure what you would get as a result.
I know, horror of horrors, but how about painting it with a good primer followed by good top coat of semigloss paint?
2012-03-23THOMAS RITZLER: hi,
i have to say your husband is right...sorry
on face , that is not to say that if you were to attempt to strip the cabinets and then use this product then re-finish then with a light poly then you could get what you want
other sise if your not into this time and labor than amybe new cabinets are the why to go
good luck!!
2011-09-18ALASTAIR J asked: I'm considering Circa 1850 stain and varnish to re-stain my existing finished oak stairs and railings. My objective is to darken and redden the color of the oak stairs and handrails (the spindles are white) to match new hardwood flooring I want to install that will be a Brazilian Cherry or similar color, not the existing oak.
I'd be interested to hear whether other people have tried this approach and what their results were?
Thanks in advance,
AJ, Herndon, VA

2011-09-19MICHAEL DREW: Good morning AJ, my name is captain michael drew I used this product on reconditioning some wood work on my 27 ft. silverton and to be truthful, I really have enjoyed the results, i redone some cabinets and put it on a wall in the head and it worked very well, and would probably use it again if the job comes up again. 1850 is easy to work with just make sure you have the color that you want.
2011-09-19Alastair J: Thanks Michael - I appreciate your feedback!
2011-09-19CAROLYN DAVANZO: AJ,
We did the same thing. Oak stairs (light finish) installed Brazilian walnut flooring. The Circa gives good control of how dark you want it. you can go from a slight darkening to near black . It goes on relatively easy and provides a fairly durable finish
2011-09-20Alastair J: Hi Carolyn,
That sounds great - did you apply it on top of the existing varnish without stripping it first? That's what I want to do.
2011-10-21THOMAS RITZLER: hi
i have used the circa 1850 only on my boat
i will say this what i was doing was "blending" old stock teak and newer work to match
the best way i found was using the rubbing method
wich i applied with an old sock then with a clean rag or sock rubbing the stain back out of the wood
By continuing to rub the stain out i seemed to have gotten a good blending effect that i'm quite pleased with after which i would oil or use another sealing product hope this helps

2011-10-26LAURA RICHARDSON: I just got this product and tried to stain a mohogany finish onto a very light finished armoire. Unfortunately, it didn't work. You are supposed to sand the finished surface with a fine steel wool, which I did. I don't know if I didn't sand it enough, but the stain n varnish didn't take at all. I was bummed. I might try it again after sanding a little bit more. But, I was pretty disappointed!
Excellent product, easy to use and covers the wood well. Excellent to retouch

Comments about Circa 1850 Stain 'n Varnish:
Sanded and refinished cabinets in my kitchen using Satin Black colour. I used multiple coats so I could get a strong opaque colour without using paint. The wood grain is still visible through out but the coverage was great. I was able to use the product on the frame of the cupboards which was a laminate with plastic trim.
