Circa 1850 Heavy Body Paint & Varnish Remover

Circa 1850 Heavy Body Paint & Varnish Remover removes old paint, varnish, shellac, lacquer and urethane - even multiple coats. Its gel formula makes it ideal for exterior use and vertical surfaces. Because it contains no water or harsh chemicals it is safe to use on fine furniture. It will not disturb the wood's natural patina or raise the grain, and it will not harm glue joints or veneers. Circa 1850 Heavy Body Paint & Varnish Remover is non-flammable and almost odorless. Made by Swing Paints.

Wear protective gloves and work in a well ventilated area. Place the object to be stripped on a plastic sheet. Pour some stripper into a small foil, metal or glass container. Brush a liberal amount of stripper over one or two square feet of surface. Wait a few minutes for the finish to dissolve. Remove the dissolved finish using a brush or Circa 1850 Maple Scraper. Remove any residue with medium (0) steel wool dipped in stripper. When dry, wash the surface with mineral spirits or Circa 1850 Furniture Stripper.

I tried other strippers for use on an old high back windsor chair. High odor, drippy, not effective without multiple applications. This stuff is excellent. The viscosity allows application to vertical surfaces. Apply it and let it work into the finish and it works like a charm.

I have been using Circa 1850 over 5 years.I can apply to any flat or irregular surface. It begins to work almost immediately.Within minutes I have removed the old crud (some have been in place for over 150 years),and it will never raise the grain
on any type of wood.Seldom does it require more than a single THICK coat to do the complete job.
Saves me both time and $$.

Good stuff and easy to handle. Forget all the paint removers which do not have hefty odor. They are all not worth the money.
Lifts off even old latex layers in a height up to 4mm but you need to apply a reasonable quantity of the remover or apply it twice. Apply it half finger thick and it will eat the latex like a gourmand.
Use gloves or you may be not too glad after the job.

I use this to strip the antique radios that I restore. It was good with details and good with vertical surfaces. The only problem is that it dries to quickly.

Comments about Circa 1850 Heavy Body Paint & Varnish Remover:

We inherited an old row boat from my wife's childhood cottage. It must've been painted every year since the 1960s.
The stripper did a great job of eating through a good 8 layers of paint at once. I was pretty impressed as I'm not that much of an expert when it comes to stripping.
I followed the instructions and even consulted the company's website before beginning (which really had some good info on their forum) and was really happy with the results.
Now I'm just waiting for it to get warmer so I can go out fishing on the lake!

Bought it for verticle hull surfaces and bottom, also purchased Aqua Strip and 1850 was no match for Aqua Strip. Aqua Strip can be reactivated with water in a spray bottle and continues to strip until it is scrapped off.
