5200 Marine Adhesive Sealant

3M 5200 is a single part sealant that cures to form a firm, rubbery waterproof seal. When fully cured, this high strength marine adhesive remains flexible and suitable for use where shock, vibration, shrinking or swelling are concerns.

Use 5200 on wood, fiberglass, hardware, motors, on fiberglass transoms, seams, joints, between struts, and planking stern joints. This permanent adhesive bonds and seals: fiberglass deck to hull, wood to fiberglass, portholes and deck fittings, motors on fiberglass transoms, under moldings, hull seams above and below water line, centerboard trunk joints, between struts and planking, stern joints and more.

Apply with a manual caulking gun. Sealant remains workable with a trowel or spatula for up to four hours, and won't sag or flow in vertical or horizontal seams.

This high performance polyurethane adhesive sealant becomes tack-free in 24-48 hours, and completely cures in 5-7 days with no shrinking. The seal is extremely strong, retaining its strength above or below the waterline. 5200 stays flexible and allows for structural movement.

Consider using 5200 Fast Cure instead if the quickest possible cure rate is a consideration. It has slightly less tensile strength, but provides full cure in as little as 24 hours.

Applied with a 1/4" bead then spread with a putty knife, this stuff didn't turn out to be nearly as messy as other reviews led me to believe. Maybe it's worse on fiberglass or a protected wood, but I applied to raw pine and it worked like a charm.

If you are using 3M 5200 above the waterline with almost any material, and below the waterline with a metal that won't naturally introduce even a small amount of corrosion, then you've got a good product.

The problem is less with the adhesive itself than the materials glued and then kept submerged in seawater. Copper, for example, when under stress, won't stay stuck to the wood to which it has been glued. It seems that the copper slightly oxidizes, releasing the glue from the metal. 3M 5200 liberally applied did not appear to prevent this from happening.

I think the product is good, and I use it a lot, but for certain applications (as with most things) it won't work.

Comments about 3M 5200 Marine Adhesive Sealant:

I bought this to seal the seams on a v-bottom aluminum boat that was leaking water into the boat. I used a brass wire wheel to clean the seam, and applied the material, waited a week, and no more leaks. Some people said that it was hard to apply, however I didn't think it was any different than caulking you would use at home to seal your house.

BEEN USING 3M5200 FOR A LONG TIME. IT'S STRENGTH AFTER CURING IS AMAZING. SOMEWHAT DIFFICULT TO APPLY IN SOME SITUATIONS, BUT THAT IS OVERSHADOWED BY ITS EFFECTIVENESS. I USED IT ONCE TO SECURE A DOOR SILL TO CONCRETE IN A VERY HIGH TRAFFIC AREA: ITS STILL THERE AFTER 10 YEARS AND HASN'T BROKEN FREE. ENOUGH SAID.

This product saved me over $800.00 years ago.Had a shower door that would not stop leaking. Finally gave the customer a full refund. My brother in law told me about 5200.contacted the customer went back and resealed and two weeks later received a check from them for the full amount of the job.Needless to say i now use it anywhere i need a water proof seal.one other note i store the unused portion in the freezer and when i need it take it out and allow it to reach room tempt have had a tube last me over a year doing this.another tip from me brother in law. This sealer is as good as advertised.D Walston

Comments about 3M 5200 Marine Adhesive Sealant:

3M5200 is an adhesive, it is not caulking or RTV (silicone rubber). People complaining about dripping and not staying in place obviously never read the instructions. It can be used to seal joints and replace caulking, but you have to be aware that it starts much thinner than caulking and has a very long cure time (7 days to be fully cured) so if the joint is vertical (or horizontal but not facing up), it will run.

Once opened, the tube has a very limited shelf life, no matter how well you think you sealed the opening. Don't buy more than you will use within a month or you end up tossing it.

If used according to the instructions, it works extremely well. It cures semi-hard, more like vulcanized rubber (think rubber tire, not silicone) so is less flexible than caulk, but also much stronger and more permanent. Drying time is unusually long, 24 hours for the first skin to form, several days before firm and 7-10 days to completely cure. I've used this on boats (salt water) both above and below the water line, exterior home repairs and inside showers and tubs. Very happy with the results.

Comments about 3M 5200 Marine Adhesive Sealant:

We have a freezer a forklift can drive into. We bought it new and the installer used clear silicon caulk to seal the panel seams. In most places it didn't stick to the sheetmetal. A friend told me how incredible this stuff sticks, so I thought it would be worth a try. I think it is going to do the trick. It is also sold in smaller tubes. (not caulk tubes) Once it is opened it has to be used. We have put a screw in the open end before and then used it several weeks later, but we had to cut the tube to get it out. It's expense, but it's worth it if you need it.
