5200 Marine Adhesive Sealant

3M 5200 is a single part sealant that cures to form a firm, rubbery waterproof seal. When fully cured, this high strength marine adhesive remains flexible and suitable for use where shock, vibration, shrinking or swelling are concerns.

Use 5200 on wood, fiberglass, hardware, motors, on fiberglass transoms, seams, joints, between struts, and planking stern joints. This permanent adhesive bonds and seals: fiberglass deck to hull, wood to fiberglass, portholes and deck fittings, motors on fiberglass transoms, under moldings, hull seams above and below water line, centerboard trunk joints, between struts and planking, stern joints and more.

Apply with a manual caulking gun. Sealant remains workable with a trowel or spatula for up to four hours, and won't sag or flow in vertical or horizontal seams.

This high performance polyurethane adhesive sealant becomes tack-free in 24-48 hours, and completely cures in 5-7 days with no shrinking. The seal is extremely strong, retaining its strength above or below the waterline. 5200 stays flexible and allows for structural movement.

Consider using 5200 Fast Cure instead if the quickest possible cure rate is a consideration. It has slightly less tensile strength, but provides full cure in as little as 24 hours.

Applied with a 1/4" bead then spread with a putty knife, this stuff didn't turn out to be nearly as messy as other reviews led me to believe. Maybe it's worse on fiberglass or a protected wood, but I applied to raw pine and it worked like a charm.

If you are using 3M 5200 above the waterline with almost any material, and below the waterline with a metal that won't naturally introduce even a small amount of corrosion, then you've got a good product.

The problem is less with the adhesive itself than the materials glued and then kept submerged in seawater. Copper, for example, when under stress, won't stay stuck to the wood to which it has been glued. It seems that the copper slightly oxidizes, releasing the glue from the metal. 3M 5200 liberally applied did not appear to prevent this from happening.

I think the product is good, and I use it a lot, but for certain applications (as with most things) it won't work.

Comments about 3M 5200 Marine Adhesive Sealant:

I have an above ground swimming pool that is getting up there in years and showing it. Have noticed a few small leaks in the wall around the skimmer and eyeball. I have used this 2 yrs. in a row now to plug these leaks and it still holds. Now I have a leak in the skimmer itself so I'm gonna try it on that as well...I only need the pool for one more summer so it's worth a try!!!

Comments about 3M 5200 Marine Adhesive Sealant:

I used 5200 long cure black on my sailboat keel to fix the "smile" there. I was very disappointe with the amount of sagging of 5200. And after 4 hours of pushing it back into the v grove, I gave up. Now I have to go back tomorrow and cut off the product that has ozzed out. Problem is, I will have to reapply it and again it will sag out. Sorry I used 5200. Don't make my mistake. 5200 is not as advertized. It will sag and ozze out of verticle surfaces like the keel of a sailboat.

Installing through hull fitting and below water fitiing, sealing around stansions to the hull, rebeding areas that you don't want to leak- cleats on deck, screws that might need to be sealed above the water lines. Any areas that you are trying to keep water tight. Not a good sealant for beding acrylic to fiberglass, does not seem to bond well and not flexible enough to with stand movement well. It is runny and will not build up well in a large gap. Need to tape area around your work to keep area clean. If you wet out your finger or tool with water it will not stick to finger or trowel.

Comments about 3M 5200 Marine Adhesive Sealant:

I own an older 23 foot cuddy cabin and I needed some more space so I stripped it all out and raise the Cuddie 1 foot with clear poly carbonate then added a pilothouse I used 3M 5200 to seal the exterior joints and outside fittings I built this to suit the need for those cold day and night fishing trips on the Ohio River. I added some new lights and bottom paint. I bought everything from JD and it has worked perfectly. I am not a novice I have been boating for most of my life however I am lacking quite a bit in my design engineering. The job was completed and works very well I'm very happy with that.

Used this to seal a leak in my classic Chris Craft. Worked wonderfully, if messy. Be sure to have rags and some gasoline for clean up. And wear gloves! Also let it dry for at least 48 hrs. But works wonderfully.

I was using this product to seal the deck to hull joint. It would not stay in place and ran down the hull. It took 4 days to cure. After it cured it did provide a water proof bond.

Comments about 3M 5200 Marine Adhesive Sealant:

Put a new sonar on the boat and needed to drill out the hole in the transom a bit more. Used the 5200, weather was colder, closer to mid 40's to low 50's and it came out pretty solid, just had to babysit it for a bit as gravity factored in and it did settle a bit, realized that after the application.

Once it cured a little bit the wires held all in place. Optimal conidtions are 70 degrees F and 50% humidity. Again, I was closer to mid 40's so I wet paper towels and put that over the caulk, over the last 2 days of curing. Cured in 7 days with no issues.

The boat is garage kept, but in an unheated garage, this stuff works extremely well and held up to a full day of fishing in 38 degrees, exactly 7 days after applying.
