3M 4200 Fast Cure is a one-part general purpose Polyurethane sealant with good adhesion to wood, fiberglass, gelcoat, plastics and metals. When cured, 4200 forms watertight, weather-resistant seals on joints and boat hardware above or below the waterline.
4200 FC (fast cure) is ideal for hardware and bedding applications. It is paintable and sandable. While 3M 5200 sealant results in permanent bonds, 4200 has approximately half the strength, making it is a good choice for applications where the bond might need to be broken in the future such as replacing hardware.

2013-05-17TERRELL WILLIAMS asked: If it gets rained on while curing will it perform well?
2013-04-24FRED DURR asked: I am looking for a product to be used for bedding tempered glass into a wood frame and then closing with mahogany trim to finish. Would 4200 work well as a bedding product? What product would work best?

2013-05-15SIDNEY HELMS: 4200 yes, 5200, no. In my opinion I think it would be ideal for your application.
Thanks,

2013-04-14DAN LUNDY asked: Does this bond plexiglas?
+Expand Answers
2013-04-17ED MILLER: Due to possible issues with this sealant attacking the plastic I only use Dow 795 sealant which is designed for bonding glass or acrylic.
2013-04-17DONALD HYATT: If you use 4200 for plexiglass your using the wrong sealant. See BoatIUS magazine April May article on pages 80 through 84 . 3M 4200 is not compatible with plastic. You should use Dow 795 or Sikaflex 295 UV and a special primer, or butyl tape
2013-04-17TERRI FORMAN: That's not the application we used it for, but it was a great sealant --- I think it would probably work, but don't know for sure.
2013-04-17BRENT BARRETT: 4200 will not work well
Go to 3M site and read the instructions and similar information is on the tube
2013-04-17NORALYN JOHNSON: We tried to use 4200 to put plexiglas in a butterfly hatch in our sailboat. It would not stick. We had to use a product especially designed for plexiglas, but can not come up with the name, sorry. Hope this helps.
2013-04-17Dan Lundy: Thank you for your reply. That does help. It eliminates the product from consideration for my project. Blessings, Dan
2013-04-17DONALD HYATT: No . See BoatUS April May 2013 magazine online about page 80 shows the glues and there applications
2013-04-05A shopper asked: How soon can I put the boat back in the water when used on trim tabs?
+Expand Answers
2013-04-05SHANE VASBINDER: it will all depend on the temperature and humidity when you install it. If you follow the manufacture's instructions, you should be fine.
2013-04-05DAVID DAUGHERTY: If you are using just to seal, I'd say a matter of hours. If you are using as a bonding agent, then 48 hours.
2013-04-07KILBOURNTOWN gamas@execpc.com: You can use the boat within 24 hours but I would at least wait 48 hours before applying extreme force
2013-03-18A shopper asked: what temps can this be used at?
+Expand Answers
2013-03-20PAUL COOPER: Hi,
I live in NH and have been working on my boat in an unheated "boat house" for the past couple of years. I have used both 4200 and 5200 at temperatures as low as 30 degrees. It takes longer to set up at lower temps and should be stored inside when you are not using it so it flows well.
2013-03-20JOSEPH VLCEK: According to the documentation available on the manufacturers
web site the application temperature range if 40->100 deg F.
2013-03-20MATTHEW HINMAN: Above 40 F to 110 I believe. Know 40F is the lowest it recommends
2013-03-20KENNETH WEINSTEIN: Don't use it below 40 degrees F. It won't cure properly. Don't ask me how I know this.
2013-03-20HERB DELOACH: Per the directions on the tube----"Sealant must be applied at temperatures between 40degrees F (4 degrees C) and 100 degrees F (38 degrees C).
Cure: At 70 degrees F (21 degrees C ) and 50% relative humidity a 1/4" bead becomes tack free in 1 to 2 hrs.and complete cure in 24 hrs. Longer at lower temperatures and /or humidity."
2013-03-20ALAN BERNSTEIN: Sorry I can't help...it worked great at 75-80 degrees!
2013-03-20PATRICK MCDERMOTT: I'd suggest reading the instructions. It's been a while since I used it, but as I remember it was cool some nights. It took much longer to set up and cure. I read somewhere that if you put an open tube into a refer it will last a while. The same for a new one you don't plan to use. I probably pushed the limits on the temperature issue, but there aren't enough warm days to work on a boat in Minnesota, if you plan to ever use it.
2013-03-21DAVE MOUNT: 40 to 100 F; Google the product name and get the product info from 3M's website.
2013-03-22NORMAN FEMRITE: According to 3-M's TS Data Sheet, 4200 can be used between 40 and 100 degrees Fahrenheit.
2013-02-25A shopper asked: will 3m4200 work on deck seams?
+Expand Answers
2013-02-28VMS MANUFACTURING: Should work very well as it is polyurethane with good flexibility. For a totally permanent waterproof seal I would recommend 5200. Either will give a waterproof seal but the 4200 would allow dis-assembly if required at a later date.
2013-02-28JEFF WILSON: yes it would, though 4200's main attribute is as an adhesive that is more easily cleaned/removed than 5200; if there is a chance you will have to remove the decking, 4200 would be a reasonable choice.
2013-03-01STEVE DEFOREST: I would say it would probably work OK. I would use 5200 though if you don't plan on ever taking it back apart.
2013-03-20JOSEPH VLCEK: According to the documentation available on the manufacturers
web site 3m5200 is recommended for hull to deck seams.
2013-01-05A shopper asked: what is best choice of 3m product for water tight seal in transom screw hole below water line?
+Expand Answers
2013-01-07ROB ROWLANDS: I prefer 4200 as it is both an adhesive and caulk and is not permanent.
2013-01-07NORBERT LEISGANG: 3M 4200 Fast Cure Marine Sealant works great for under water.
2013-01-07JOHN POLHAMUS: the 3M 4200 would be a good choice. I have used this for sealing holes for a extended platform and it worked great.
the only issue is when you open the tube there is no saving it for another day, so buy as small a tube as you need or it will be wasted...
JP
2013-01-07VMS MANUFACTURING: Personally I would drill it out and fill with epoxy filler for a permanent repair. The 5200 is an excellent bedding/sealing compound where it is covered almost entirely from exposure.
2013-01-09GARY LINGENFELTER: For a PERMANENT seal the best product would be 3M 5200.
4200 is used if you want to be able to remove the part/screw
later.
2013-01-09MARK RITTER: I used 4200 in all the bronze screws both above and below the waterline on my Herreshoff build.
Just pulled the boat for the winter and no evidence of water intrusion.
Also I was able to pull the screws in preparation for adding a coat of varnish
2013-01-10NORMAN FEMRITE: If you are applying 3M 4200 so that it can cure before being underwater, I'd be very confident in using it - as I have on my Catalina 25. If you are making an emergency repair with the boat in the water, I might check if this - or any sealant - will achieve the proper bond.
2012-12-25A shopper asked: can this product be used on a existing prefab shower base? The old caulk must be removed. Any recommendations.
Thanks.
+Expand Answers
2012-12-26Michael Deane: I feel sure enough to say yes. Its an awkward product to use IF playing with vertical surface. Masking to protect surrounding areas and also to keep a smooth finish would be advisable. Do NOT use packing tape for this!
2012-12-26SHANE VASBINDER: This would probably work really well, but it would be very permanent. It would be very hard to remove if you need to remove it for some reason.
2012-12-26JOSEPH LOGAN: This sealant should work well on your prefab shower base. It is tough and durable, adheres really well, and will not dry out. But it is tough to remove when it is cured.
2012-12-28JEFF WILSON: 4200 would be a good use for that situation, with it's exposure to water and general damp environment of a shower.
2012-12-29ERIC JOHNSON: Should work fine as long as old silicon residue is removed. A little hard to work with but once you have it where it looks good and you want it, it won't go anywhere forever. I would just use Adhesive Tile and Bath caulk , much less gooey and water clean-up. Eric J
2012-12-29KILBOURNTOWN gamas@execpc.com: Yes, the 4200 can be used as a sealant adhesive. It will be a quite aggressive adhesive and may change color when exposed to cleaners. I've seen it stay perfectly white in unlit area's and turn to a dull yellow in other areas exposed to sun.
2012-11-03A shopper asked: will this work of holding tank fittings?
+Expand Answers
2012-11-09Nathan Fournier: Yes it will, with a semi-permanent bond and good medium holding strength, if want high strength and a permanent bond then use the 3M 5200 preferably the fast cure, thank you.

2012-06-06A shopper asked: How long after applying in depth transducer application before launching?
+Expand Answers
2012-06-07SHANE VASBINDER: I launched my sailboat after 24 hrs. I don't remember what the manufacturer's instructions were, but you should follow them.
2012-06-07BRETT PRICE: As long as transducer is mechanically fastened, boat can be launched immediately. If you are relying on the 4200 as adhesive instead of as a sealant it usually is strong enough after 45 minutes but takes 24 hours for full cure strength. Polyurethanes generally rely on moisture to cure and 4200 will cure underwater.
2012-06-07DANIEL GREEN: I did not test strength in my application. It gets tack free in a few hours. Cure rate depends on temperature and possibly humidity, According to 3M: time to fully cure is up to 2 days. If you are using only as a sealant and not as an adhesive, I'd be tempted to go shorter than this, but not if depending on adhesive properties to hold something on or together.
There is more info on 3m website.
I used this to repair some rust holes in the floor of my truck as a temporary repair. I simply dried it out, gave it a good vacuuming and applied it and it adhered incredibly well, much better than standard silicone would have...

Comments about 3M 4200 Fast Cure Marine Sealant:
I was looking for a durable product to use on an project that is highly exposed to sun, salt and water in the Bahamas. I figured this would be the best solution and it needed to be black in color. Only wish it was sold in smaller quantities so that application wouldn't require a caulking gun.

Comments about 3M 4200 Fast Cure Marine Sealant:
I used this to repair the tiles that had fallen off my inground pool at the water line. Great stuff. Have to use w/in 24 hrs of opening but is workable for awhile after I placed the tile. By the next morning, it was on for good. DO NOT get this on your hands. If you do-I used goofoff til I couldn't stand the burning anymore then it took a couple of days to wear off. I did notice it wore off really quick after I scrubbed my bathtub-I have no idea why. By the way-I am a woman so you can do this too.

Comments about 3M 4200 Fast Cure Marine Sealant:
After many years of unsatisfactory results using hardware store/home center caulks, I spent the big money and went with a marine product. I selected the 4200 over the 5200 because I wanted to be able to remove the caulk for future repairs etc. This sealant applied nicely and remained workable for a nice long time for touching up. I tooled the sealant with my finger dipped into a small bowl with a bar of ivory soap and water and kept a mineral spirits soaked rag to keep my hands clean and wipe up stray sealant. When tooling the caulk, I first pushed it in place and used very light force when wiping it to keep from pulling it away and wasting material. The result was a beautiful smooth and tidy bead. I check back in a year to report the durability as other caulks never make it a year, especially in my tile wall/tile floor shower stall.

I used the 4200 sealant to seal the seams in a fiberglass swimming pool. I also used the product to attach loose tile around the border of the pool. Both applications have been in use for Three years and are holding up well.
