Fiberglass Mat also known as Chopped Strand Mat or CSM
Fiberglass Mat is a non-woven material typically used for laminate build-up and repair work.
Fiberglass Mat consists of glass fibers laid randomly across each other and held together by a styrene binder.
Polyester is the preferred resin for wetting out this form of glass fiber material as it readily dissolves the styrene bonding agent.
Offered in various weights per square foot. The lightest version, veil mat, is used commonly as a finishing layer to mask any print-thru in a laminate schedule. This particular veil mat uses longer, thinner fibers than heavier mat weights also offered here. Think angel hair pasta to spaghetti fibers. Coarser, heavier mat is commonly used for bulk, random axis strength buildup and is also an excellent initial layer when bonding repair work.

2012-09-18JIM R asked: I have a fiberglass boat and the floor is getting weak. I want to re glass and need instructions and materials?
+Expand Answers
2012-09-20DAVID DAVIS: usually it is the wood under the fiberglass is rotten causing the problem. Often the entire floor including the wooden stringers supporting the floor need to be replaced as well.
This is an expensive and time consuming job. The entire interior of hull needs to be stripped to do it right. Then gIass in new stringers, replace floor and cover that withe glass then replace all of the fixture and interior. I have done it twice . The last time I wish I wouldn't have. Careful consideration needs to be given to the cost of the project and the value of the boat when finished. Good luck with it what ever you decide to do.
2012-07-20CHUCK CASH asked: I am thinking about fiberglassing the top of a Coleman pop-up camper (ABS) that has several cracks. What do you think??? Need strenghth rather than looks.
+Expand Answers
2012-07-29NATHAN DALLY: The mat is very strong. You don't need to build up much because of the tensile strength. I was very pleased with the aesthetics of the weave as well. Grab it and tackle that project!
2012-07-29DAVIS BOAT WORKS: I don't believe it will work. Polyester resin and most epoxies do not adhere well or even at all to ABS. You could well be driving down the highway and have the whole top come flying off. I have never had any success in the few times I tried before I learned better.
Depending on the size and number of cracks you might consider buying a plastic welder. I confess to have never used one, but have often thought about buying one. From what i know of them, they melt the original plastic on either side of the crack while feeding in additional material which all fuses into solid plastic. The feed material is of similar chemical composition.
I believe they can be bought for somewhere around 200-300 dollars.

2012-07-30KENT M AINSLIE: Chuuk,
Fiberglass mat or mat/cloth (2-3 layers total) and polyester resin should work fine for your repairs or for covering the entire roof. The key to success is meticulous surface prep with appropriate cleaning, dewaxing/degreasing (acetone works well), sanding, filling/fairing the crack voids, and a final wipe down with acetone before applying surface material. For that small an area you can precut your materials and use finish resin or if you are ever going to use the top for storage/walking on for any reason you could use 2 layers of mat and 1 layer of cloth with laminating resin which gives you as much time as you need to finish the job. You can feather in the glass at the drip rails/roof bends. Be sure to paint the repair to prevent sun damage. You can use a throw away brush to lay on a good polyurethane one or two part paint (may need primer first) and then put a nice final finish on using a foam brush over the fresh bristle brush coat. JD should have more info/advice on the materials and procedures. Good luck.

2013-02-16Chuck Cash: Thanks for the answers to this newbie!!! My project got put on back burner for awhile and I have now decided to strip off the entire top, leaving the foam core, and layering a new top all together. The foam does not react to lacquer thinner so I assume I can polyester and fiber mat right on this clean surface??? Any suggestions are welcome. The top is peeled off and I will begin as soon as the temperature rises with coming spring. Thanks in Advance Chuck C
2012-03-06DANIEL URBINA asked: I want to lay fiberglass on wooden floor on a boat, and I want to know the style and thickness of fiberglass that is approriate...boat floor 7' x 13'. I would like to know: thickness required, yards and cost, and resin -gal(s)?

2012-03-06DAVIS BOAT WORKS: Assuming this is a something like an outboard runabout I would suggest 3 layers of 3/4 oz mat. It is described as 3/4 oz meaning it weighs 3/4 oz per square foot. So if you multiply the number of square feet in the boat 91 sq ft x 3 layers x 3/4 oz then you will need 12.8 lbs of mat. Mat/ resin ratio should be ideally 50/50 but hand lay up and your probable lack of experience suggests you will get more likely about 30/70 ratio. IE 25 -30 lbs of resin. Resin weighs around 10 lbs per gallon so you will need about 3 gallons of resin.

I should mention this should be done with polyester resin. You never use mat with epoxy, only polyester.

2012-01-10JIM SETZER asked: is this the material that is used to attach ceramic tile to a kitchen countertop. what adhesive is used to glue the paper to the kitchen countertop?
+Expand Answers
2012-01-11JOHN SLAYMAN: Jim,
Not knowing your situation will mean I go at this a couple ways. If you need to seal the countertop off because its a porous surface, than you could use this mat. You would use epoxy to put it on the countertop, let it cure completly then I guess you could then use either tile adhesive or thinset to put down your tiles. I would not go that route myself as I have done tile work in a kitchen and just used the adhesive for tile you get from the tile supplier. This stuff works great on a boat though! If you go the route of using it as a moisture barrier, JD has great videos of how to use epoxy and fiberglass matting. Good Luck!
2012-01-11DAVIS BOAT WORKS: I have never seen this used in that manner. This is used with polyester resin. What paper are you looking for? I always use thin set to install tile followed with grout.
2012-01-11TIM GORMLEY: I'm guessing that you are trying to tile over a plastic laminate (Formica) top.
Personally, I wouldn't do it, but could use a tile specific product like Ditra Mat or screw down 1/4" cement backer board (Hardie or Durock) over the laminate and then tile it. Use a latex modified thinset designed for such an installation.
I've never heard of anyone using fiberglass mat under the tile.
I've always just made new subtops from exterior grade, voidless 3/4" plywood, put 1/4" durock on that and then tile. I've never had a problem in 20 years of doing like that.
Do a google search on "tile over laminate top" to find more specific techniques.
Comments about Jamestown Distributors Fiberglass Mat:
I requested the 1708 be rolled rather than folded. Received the product on a nice sturdy cardboard tube. The CSM I also ordered did not, which made it much more difficult to unroll and cut.

Comments about Jamestown Distributors Fiberglass Mat:
Don't buy the small packaged fiberglass mat from the local hardware store if you're going to be using a lot of it, and you usually need more than you first think. I made the hardware store mistake and paid about 8x too much per sq foot than through JTD. It comes in a nice sized roll, easy to use and the size let's you utilize big pieces of Fiberglass or cut it small ones. It's a convenient size/shape and at a great price.
