2012-06-04PETER ROBBIE: I ordered the 3M full face mask respirator from Jamestown to do a big hull sanding project. But I was totally disappointed -- it did not seal around my face, so I went back to using a respirator and googles. So it was a total waste of money.

2012-06-04ELLSWORTH DIXON: Read the "Material Safety Data Sheet" for the product and call the 3M help line for their recomendation.

2012-06-04A shopper asked: what is the life time of 3M 6001?
+Expand Answers
2012-06-04RALPH C. WALKER: That depends on your ventilation system. Using pre filters and good ventilation they will last quite a while.
2012-06-04ELLSWORTH DIXON: When you start to notice any difficulty when breathing in. OSHA regulations would require that you have a respiratory physical if you are working as an "employee" before using. This is done to be sure that your heart can withstand the additional strain (no matter how minor) that is placed on your heart and lungs when using a respirator.
2012-06-04A shopper asked: is it 3M 6001 can be used for spray painting?
+Expand Answers
2012-06-04SCOTT GEBELEIN: Yes. It can be used for spray painting. Your lungs will thank you
2012-06-04RALPH C. WALKER: The 3M 6001 along with a prefilter such as the 5P71 or 5N11 can be used for paint spraying.
2012-06-04ELLSWORTH DIXON: Yes. I happen to be a Safety Engineer as well as an amature boat builder. This filter is for organic vapors which are found in most paints. However, to be on the safe side, read the MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet) that is available for almost all products upon request. If organic vapors are listed I would highly recomend the use of this cartridge along with a half-face respirator.
2012-01-19LARRY WHITED asked: Shall I assume that for Two Part polyurethane paints the 6006 cartridge should be used?

2012-01-19ANDREW PYE: Larry,
It worked well for my job. It also worked for those nasty vapors from
CPES.
2011-10-27PAUL F asked: Is this the correct respirator filter for the 3M 7500 mask when using epoxy?
+Expand Answers
2011-10-27KYLE BAKIS: Paul,
Yes, both the 6001 and 6006 cartridges will work...I use the 6001 with my 3M 7500 mask for painting and epoxy work. The 6006 would also work but is more expensive as it gives protection from other vapors above and beyond organic (would be overkill for paint and epoxy work).
2011-10-27Paul F: thanks for the response and helping me to save money.
2011-10-27Paul F: Enter your reply here. We'll email it to KYLE
2011-10-27JONATHAN WELTER: Without taking legal responsibility, yes. 3M will have details on their website.
However, thinned epoxy for spraying has really nasty chemicals in the thinner; chemicals much worse than say synthetic lacquer or poly-urethane or oil paint. So if you're spaying epoxy then no promises.
Also, if spraying thinned epoxy in any real boat quantity, get a full face (eyes inside) mask.
2011-10-28Paul F: Thank you. That's very important information! You guys are a great supplier! I'm not doing that for now but I will certainly keep that information where I won't miss it in the future.
2011-11-07SUZANNE WALKER: Ya, these are the ones to use with epoxy. OSHA only rates them for 40 hours of "open time" (ie: once the package is unsealed). Its common to remove them from the mask and store them in a tupperware between uses to stretch out their efficacy. And don't forget the particulate filters that fit over the organic vapor cartridge! Epoxy dust is nasty for the human body and those filters work great at catching ambient dust, etc. Good luck!
Don't be foolish and wear one of those flimsy dust masks. Wear a real respirator, and replace the cartridges often.
Epoxy, Marine Paint, Solvents, teak dust - it's all bad for you. These things just work.

Comments about 3M Paint Spray Respirator Filters:
These filters are used in conjunction with a full face respirator. Together, they provide excellent protection from the innumerable chemical fumes and small particles that I work with in my studio. The system is easy to put-on. The air exchange is excellent, eliminating any feeling of trying to breathe through a plastic bag. Highly recommended.
