Acetone is the strongest and fastest evaporating solvent around. Excellent for dissolving two-part epoxies before set up, for cleaning fiberglass repair tools and for thinning fiberglass resin. Acetone will easily remove sticky residue on glass and porcelain left by stickers and labels, and will clean lacquer tools well.
As Acetone is highly volatile, it will not work as a thinner for most oil paints and coatings. Mixing with water dilutes strength and slows evaporation rate. Acetone is used in autobody shops and boatyards, for autobody repair, fiberglass hull repair and other epoxy or fiberglass projects.
Acetone is too strong to be used as a coating solvent. Will attack plastics, synthetic fabrics etc. Is non-photochemically reactive. Acetone is a colorless liquid with a mildly pungent odor. Cannot be shipped UPS or US Mail. Truck freight available.

2011-12-16GLEN ERSLY: no this will ruin the awlgrip,,,,,I would call the mfr of awlgrip to find out the best way...
2011-12-16MICHAEL KOWALESKI: Hi Chris,
Acetone is a fairly strong chemical. I would be very cautious, as this may harm the AwlGrip. I would check with a sign company - someone that paints boat names to see what type of paint is typically used, and what is used to remove it.
Then I would check with makers of AwlGrip to ensure that the paint remover that is recommended by the sign painter is OK for the finish.
2011-12-16Chris Chris: Thank you Michael
2011-12-16MICHAEL KOWALESKI: Hi Chris,
I found this on the AwlGrip website; it looks like it depends on if you have AwlGrip, AwlGrip HS or AwlCraft 2000 as a finish:
Awlgrip and Awlgrip HS only:
Solvents such as Awlprep T0008, Awlprep Plus T0115, toluene, laquer thinner, M.E.K., acetone or kerosene may be used to soften or remove heavy build ups of grease and grime, felt tip markings or spray paint on the topcoat.
Awlcraft 2000 only:
Use only mild solvents to remove stubborn stains. Awlprep T0008, mineral spirits, xylene, kerosene and diesel fuel are acceptable for use on Awlcraft 2000.
2011-12-16Chris Chris: That's above and beyond! Very kind of you.
Thank you again.
Chris Fay
