Questions & Answers about Teak Flag Pole:
2013-03-06A shopper asked: are these flag poles pre- finished?
+Expand Answers
2013-03-07JIM OVERTON: They are not. I'm not aware of any on the market that are.
2013-03-07HOWARD E JOHANNSSEN: The teak flag pole I received was unfinished. I was glad that it was. It gave me the chance to place a brass grommet at the base to allow easy removal as I desired. It has worked out fine. Six coats of good varnish and it still looks brand new.
2013-03-07JIM MCINTYRE: I'm assuming that your question is whether the teak flag pole has a protective coating on the teak?
Id so, the answer is yes.
I've used the teak flag pole for three boating seasons and it has weathered well.
2013-03-07PAUL BRUNI: They are unfinished.
2013-03-07WAYNE MUELLER: The poles are oiled but not varnished.
I put 5-6 coats of varnish on ours and it lasted the entire summer.
Only needs 2 coats for this season.
2013-03-07GREG STRAUCH: The flagpole is ready for finishing. But you have to varnish it yourself.
2013-03-07MATTHEW SAMMARTINO: No, they are not.
2013-03-08CARL RUDOW: I believe so, though I bought one 3 years ago. Can't believe someone at Jamestown doesn't know their inventory well enough to answer your question directly, though.
2013-03-08AL PUERINI: These poles are a high quality, smooth sanded natural surface . They do not come pre-finished.
I applied 4 coats of varnish and it looks fantastic ! Very satisfied
2013-03-09TORI MCCLURE: They are sanded to a very smooth finish. Being teak we have let them weather naturally. If they tarnish, you can use the usual teak cleaning and prep kits that are used for teak furniture and benches.
Most flags remain attached to the pole, but the pole is pulled and stored inside when not in use..
2012-03-05KEN ISTEL asked: I have a Grand banks 36 Classic. The forward small flagpole (burgee) has a metal sleeve at the bottom. it is1 inch outside measurement wide by 2 1/4 inches long. The inside measurement of the sleeve is 7/8 inch. Should I buy a 3/4 inch wide flagpole and add tape to get to the 7/8 inch width or buy the 1 inch wide pole and forget sbout the sleeve? Will the either pole sit far enough in the holder to allow a through screw? Screw hole is 1 1/2 inches from the bottom.
Thank you.

2012-03-05JIM OVERTON: I would use the larger pole and work the base down to size with a wood rasp. I've never had much luck trying to shim out smaller stock - just doesn't last. T
2012-03-05Ken Istel: Jim,
Thanks for your quick and professional advice. I really appeciate it.
Ken
2012-03-08NICK BYRNE: I would buy the 1". If necessary, you can grind the part that fits into the mounting bracket down on a bench grinder, or use a wood file to remove a small bit to make it fit. You want the flag pole to sit on the bottom of the mounting bracket (sleeve), or it will not be stable. Then, the set screw will further stabilize it and keep it from coming out of the mounting bracket. I believe I would avoid the use of tape; it will be a pain in the butt. Remember, it's going to get very wet, and probably stay wet for long periods of time.
Hope that helps

2012-03-18TORI MCCLURE: Buy 1" an use a wood rasp or rough file to shave the base down. Very easy to do.
2012-02-15A shopper asked: what size teak flag staff is recommended for a 40 foot sail boat?
+Expand Answers
2012-02-15john frisoli: You need the longest one they have. I forget what that is.
2012-02-15john frisoli: Check that. You need 36".
2012-02-15GENE ALBRIGHT: I am not sure about a sail boat but it looked good, well portioned, on a 41' cruiser.
2012-02-15JOSEPH ADRIAN: A flag should be about 1 inch per foot of boat length so choose your pole to accept that size flag.
2012-02-16JOHN TARNOWSKI: I owned a 39' Allied Mistress and flew a 36" or 48" (depending on the conditions) Yacht Ensign on the leech of the mizzen sail when underway. The same sizes would be appropriate on the staff - about inch per boat ft of length.
2012-02-17EDWRD CARHART: rule of thumb is 1" flag for each foot of boat
a 2 x 3 would be ok , My choice would be 2.5 x4
eather would look good on a 36" teak pole
I have 42ft aft cabin proudley fly 3 x5 on a 48" pole
2011-12-05ANDREW MACUALAY asked: Does the diameter at the base extend all the way up the flag pole?
+Expand Answers
2011-12-06GENE ALBRIGHT: No
2011-12-06MARK MURRAY: .......................no, there is a shoulder about 1.5" from the base that prevents the pole from sliding to far into the base.
2011-12-06G PHILIP SCHRODEL: no, it is tapered
2011-12-06ANDREW MOEN: No. Only about 1 1/2-2 inches, for it to fit in the cup of the socket.
2011-12-06JEFF GRUVER: My teak flag pole is 3/4' at the base but this is only the portion that inserts into the holder. From there the diameter is 1'.
2011-12-06JAMES MOORE: I don't believe so. I believe that I ended up returning that pole because it didn't fit my base properly. I ended up making my own pole on my table saw by ripping a piece of teak into a 12 sided stick (w blade angled at 30 degrees) and then light hand sanding. It came out quite nice and is the same diameter for the entire length. I "rounded" only the base, to fit my holder, and left the rest 12 sided. It is quite unique.
Start with a square shaft, rip 4 tabs off at 30 degrees, then rip the other 4 tabs off by turning the pole end for end. This technique utilizes the same 4 "primary" faces to reference all additional rips. Good luck!
2011-12-06WILLIAM WIGINGTON: No, it is tapered
2011-12-07ERNEST RIVARD: No, the diameter at the base does not go all the way up the flag pole, it tapers down as it gets to the top. The thickest part is the bottom one third of the pole. Is a really nice item and top quality.
2011-12-07AL PUERINI: No. It tapers to about half the base diameter.
2011-10-23JOHN L. LAST NAME asked: Does the 18" teak flag pole have a metal rod running down the inside of it?
+Expand Answers
2011-10-24MARC JOHNSTON: the 48" pole does not have any visible metal rod in it
2011-10-24JERRY BRON: John, I bought one a littlmore than a year ago for my boat. I attached some grommets and did not see a metal rod in the pole. Very satisfied with my purchase. Jerry
2011-10-24LARRY FORTMULLER: John:
I recently purchased the 60" model and it is solid teak without a metal rod
2011-10-24WILLIAM TAFURI: The flag pole that I recently bought from Jamestown does not have a metal rod running down the inside of it. The teak pole itself is quite sturdy, but I put a 8" stainless steel collar around the base to help avoid it breaking at the mount when under stress.
2011-10-25CARL RUDOW: I don't think so, but I haven't cut the pole in half to see. There is no visable rod at the bottom of the pole, and I have inserted eye screws for attaching the flag without a problem. I don't know if the screws go halfway in or not - but the bottom one probably does.
2011-10-26DAVID MAYS: No it is all wood.
2011-10-27NICK BYRNE: No, it doesn't; it's solid teak.
2011-10-10A shopper asked: I want to use a teak flag pole on boat and want to know the size of a typical fishing pole holder. Is there a universal size?? Thank you !!
+Expand Answers
2011-10-13ERNEST RIVARD: There is no universal size, freshwater fishing holders are one inch to inch and a half; saltwater fishing holders are two inches or more. I bought the four foot teak pole with one inch and quarter base, I would not try to use it with any holder or fishing pole holder that was not inch and quarter. They cost too much to lose overboard! Sprayed the pole with marine polyuthrane and it looks super!
Comments about Jamestown Distributors Teak Flag Pole:
Used to display our burgee along side of a slightly longer one that displays the American flag on our powerboat. Teak flag pole requires no maintenance unless you want to varnish it. Have had the longer one for more than 10 years. Great traditional look at a good price.
