Questions & Answers about Dock Cleats Galvanized Iron Open Base:
2013-03-21L A JOHNSON asked: Hi Robin & Kelly! I am going to use these cleats in our lake house for bathroom hardware in a nautical theme bath. Using an old oar on the wall and cleats will be the towel hooks, (thinking I'll get the 8" cleats, turn them horizontally and use it to hang two towels; one on either end of the cleat) Does anyone know the measurement for either end of the cleat to the mounting hardware? Wondering if it would be enough space for a towel to hang. Also, placing on the back of the door as robe hooks and on the cabinet as pull knobs. Would like to paint them bronze to match other hardware. Did you ladies paint the cleats and if so, what paint? What size did you use on the kitchen cabinets and drawers? I really appreciate your help and any tips you may have for me. Thanks so much for your time! ~Laurie Mar 21, 2013

2013-03-23ROBERT MACALUSO: I think that securing an 8 in cleat horizontally on a door/wall will allow a towel and or robe to slip off. You would have to mount them vertically. An 8 in cleat will have about 3 in of length from the tip to the mounting screw.
For cabinets I would use a 3 inch cleat (if there is such a thing) I know they make 4 in.
The galvanized cleats can be painted with most any paint. The plastic ones may require paint optimized for plastic. They do sell such paint in Home Depot in a spray can.
Good luck.
2013-05-13RadioShack Hastings: Robert, Many thanks for your informative reply! Based on your input I am going to purchase 4" cleats for the cabinets and as robe/towel hooks (placed vertically) I did read on other sites the Rustoleum Spray paint in oil rubbed bronze works well; however, primer is a must! I'll let you know how it turns out. Thanks!
2013-02-27A shopper asked: Same question -- are they made in China? I don't have a lot of faith in products from there -- who knows what quality of metal the zinc is covering up?

2012-08-01KELLY HAMILTON: I am unable to answer your question because I used them as decorative hardware on some large bunk bed drawers!
2012-08-01ROBIN ROBERTSON: I am sorry I am unable to answer your question. I bought many cleats to be used at kitchen cabinet knobs in a beach house! Hopefully another customer will be able to answer your question! Robin Robertson

2012-05-26A shopper asked: What is the hole spacing on the six inch cleat center to center?
+Expand Answers
2012-05-30ERIC ROTHMAN: 1-1/4" center to center
2012-05-30FRANK FENTON: The center to center is 1.25 inches for the 6 inch cleat.
I fastened them with 1/4 inch lag screws, so I know the holes are at least 1/4 inch diameter.
2012-01-02A shopper asked: What mounting hardware is requiered for the 4 inch cleat?

2012-01-03MARK LAWSON: I mounted mine with 3" screws but it didn't hold in strong winds. Next year, I'm going to mount it with a bolt, washers and nut for a stronger connection.
2012-01-03ERIC ROTHMAN: galvanized thru bolts is what I used
2011-11-30TIM HAAPANEN asked: What is the distance between the cleat and the edge of the dock?

2011-09-14DENNIS HOBBS asked: I cannot bolt the 10" cleats on the dock will long 3/8" lag screws work?

2011-09-14DANIEL SESLAR: Hi Dennis,
The cleats I used were smaller sized. Mine had a hex shaped recess designed to hold a bolt head captive for through bolting from the bottom. A Lag with a washer from the top could work, but will offer less holding. Hope this helps, Dan
2011-09-15CRAIG IRWIN: You can't use lag screws because the bolt heads are recessed into the cleat. They must be throughbolted.
2011-09-17DAVID BIRNBAUM: I only used bolts with the cleats so I can't give you any insight. I did use lags on putting together parts of the dock and they seem to hold well. I'm on a lake in northern Adirondack Park and am subject to a fair amount of boat traffic and deep freezing

I'm using the 6 inch to secure 7/16" poly rope on a large canopy cover. The cleats were a perfect size for the job and the galvanized coating looks as if they should hold up to the weather.

Comments about Jamestown Distributors Dock Cleats Galvanized Iron Open Base:
The 14" cleats are a must on our docks for securing boats 60' and up. The 14" cleat can handle the thicker lines and provide a more secure tie for hurricane preparedness. This cleat is becoming difficult to find, most places only go up to 12".
