If you've never used a patternmakers rasp, then run, do not walk to get one. This site consistently has the best prices on this item and you should not be without this tool.
You can spend a small fortune getting a "hand cut" rasp, but unless you are a novelty tool collector there is no reason to go elsewhere.
The (mostly) random location of the cutting teeth is the key to controlling this tool--it won't pull itself into or away from the work, but allows you to guide it where YOU want.
Get the #49 and the #50. You won't be sorry.
Like all files and rasps, should be used with a handle, cleaned properly and stored not in contact with other cutting edges.

I use these for roughing in sculpted table legs or chair arms. The first file I received had a definite ridge down one side that made it unusable. When the replacement arrived it had a more subtle occurrence of the same problem. I was able to fettle it into a usable condition but have not had this problem with others. If this is an indication of a slip in QA for Nicholson, it will be a lot easier to add another $10 or $15 and move up to an Auriou or a Dragon.

I bought this rasp as a gift for my husband after he took a longbow making class. You had the best price online for the Nicholson #50 rasp that he wanted and he has already started making a second bow. Thanks so much for a great product!

        Comments about Nicholson Cabinet Rasps:

I've been just getting by with a generic rasp that was made in china. It was so slow that I'd switch to using sandpaper before going back to that cheap rasp.
Finally bit the bullet and got the nicholson rasp after seeing videos of it being used and the apparent ease of wood removal.
Gets rid of excess wood fast and is a fine enough cut that you won't spend as much time sanding gouges out of the wood.
        My favorite woodworking tool now!

          Comments about Nicholson Cabinet Rasps:

Bought 2 of these. One was great. The other looked like a factory second. The edges on that rasp were wavy and not cut correctly. I cannot use the edges of that rasp for anything. The flat and round faces were ok. Due to restocking fee and return postage I just decided to keep it. Price was cheaper than anywhere else by a good margin.

Overall if you get a good one it is an excellent rasp.

                      Comments about Nicholson Cabinet Rasps:

Nicholson rasps #49+50 are the best mass manufactured rasps I know of. They are not as good as hand made random punched rasps but are 1/3 (or less with Jamestown discount) of the cost. I do my rough work with the Nicholson rasps and then finish with the really good (and expensive - up to $150 per rasp) tools. As I work with difficult woods (bubinga, coco bolo, satin wood etc) this saves my expensive rasps from a lot of wear. These Nicholson rasps represent a Best Buy

This rasp looks like a second quality; this is supposed to be one of the finest rasps available. The rasp is not straight, it is wavy and the end is bumpy and not smooth. The teeth seemed to be dull like someone used it on carbon fiber and sent it back or something. The handle that I ordered with it has a small black knot in it.
I am not a happy camper

I probably bought these for different reasons than most, but guitar building is still intricate woodworking. They arrived unbelievably fast (thanks JamesTownDistributors, RI), but I was skeptical to see a "made in Brazil" stamp on the two files. From what I understand, Nicolson isn't making many "made in USA" products anymore. They outsourced to Mexico and Brazil. Anyway, I took these over to a world-renowned luthier who compared mine to his USA #49 and #50 from decades ago. There is a huge pattern difference. The older ones were hand-milled,the modern ones are machined. After he tested mine out on some aged northern hardrock maple, he assured me they cut just fine and there's nothing to worry about.

So all in all, I'm very pleased. Do not worry about where it's made as long as it works well and isn't made of that cheap, Asian-forged steel.
