Questions & Answers about Cabinet Rasps:
2013-03-12MICHAEL HUSS asked: how wide is the 10" cabinet maker rasp? I need one that will clean out a 1/2" mortise.
+Expand Answers
2013-03-14WILLIAM HEIDT: The #49 and #50 are the same size and are about 1 1/4 wide and taper down as shown to about 3/4 wide. Try looking at the Grobet detail file at Tools for Working Wood. Nice tool!
2013-03-14STEPHANIE L. RIVA: The very tip of the rasp (first row of teeth) is 1/2" wide. The rasp tapers wider from there until it's about 7/8" by the tang. It won't work to clean out a 1/2" mortise.
2013-03-14GARY BREWER: You would use a bench chisel to clean out the sides of a mortise and usually a shoulder plane for the tenon. The Nicholsen #49 and #50 are great files for shaping wood ( I.e. cabriole legs etc.) but not for fitting mortise and tenons.
2013-03-15PHILIP PRESSER: Michael,
I would NOT recommend the 10" cabinet maker rasp to clean out a 1/2" mortise. This is because, although the rasp with starts out at 1/2" it increases in width to 7/8" within its first two inches of length. For this and other reasons I would recommend using a 1/2" wide chisel to clean out your mortise.

2013-03-15HAL FLYNT: Hi Michael,
I have the 49 and the 50 and they are basically the same size. 7/8" at the widest and 7/16" thick. I have used them for thru mortises and cheeks.

2013-03-15SIG JOHNSEN: both rasps ,(nicholson #49 and #50) are about an inch wide. I found some smaller ones , which are around 1/2 inch wide but are only about 5 inches long.
2013-03-11A shopper asked: is there a difference between wood files and metal files, and if there is how do i tell them apart?
+Expand Answers
2013-03-14PIERRE BOURGOUIN: The Nicholson # 49 and # 50 are excellent machine made rasps. These rasps should never be used on metal. They have numerous small cutting teeth unlike metal files. The teeth on the Nicholson # 50 are just a tiny bit smaller than on the Nicholson # 49, hence the scratch marks left by the Nicholson # 49 will be slightly coarser, but the difference is barely notiecable.(it`s like comparing 60 grit sand paper to 80 grit). I use the #49 most often. These rasps are excellent shaping tools (like shaping a cabriole leg). You can get finer rasps like the Auriou rasps;because they are hand made, expect to pay a much higher price; a Nicholson #49 has the same teeth size as an Auriou 8. Auriou also makes very fine rasps from size 12 up to size 15( extremely small teeth); the #15 cuts slowly but leaves a very smooth finish. The Nicholson # 49 is a very useful tool.
2013-03-15RICHARD SNYDER: Wood files are built to remove larger pieces of wood than metal files. Wood files (often called rasps) have lot of small scoops that look like finger nails. Metal files have straight lines, usually at an an angle, on the file so that as you push the file or pull it, the cutting edges are at an angle to the workpiece which makes it cut better.
2013-03-15MANFRED KLEIN: I'm not an expert on files and rasps, but I'll try to answer your question to the limits of my knowledge.
Generally speaking, wood files have coarser teeth than metal files - the harder the material that you want to remove, the finer the teeth need to be. For example, a hacksaw has much finer teeth than a saw used to cut wood. Which is not to say that you can't use metal files to work wood, but the teeth will clog quickly.
The very coarsest wood files are rasps, and the best have teeth irregularly spaced. The cabinet rasps that I bought from Jamestown, although pricey, are the best I've ever used, an worth every penny. The #49 rasp, which is coarser, removes wood rapidly; the #50 rasp produces a finish so fine that very little sanding is needed.
The other wood-working files and rasp types are four-in-one, bastard, half round, and others too many to mention.
Hope that this helps.
2013-02-24JEFF JUDD asked: Hi, Does anyone know where I could a few Round Raps like the 50 Nick cabinet file rasp? Yhey need to be round in 1/2 " and 5/8" diameter that tapers. Please help.
2012-07-10DONALD DEAN asked: Does the Nicholson # 49, 50 rasps come with handles?
+Expand Answers
2012-07-10Rui Fernandes: They do not come with handles. The handles are sold separately.
2012-05-10A shopper asked: what is the length of these rasps?
+Expand Answers
2012-05-10STEVE STEBULIS: Overall length is around 12 inches, filing surface around 10 inches. It's 7/8 inches wide. Made in Brazil by Nicholson.
2012-05-10GENE BENEDICT: 12 1/2'' long
2012-05-11THOMAS WILLIAMS: They have about 10 inches of working length. The ones I have are US made the newer ones are Brazilian or Chinese - can't say if the quality is the same.
2012-01-19DW STILES asked: Are these rasps USA made or foreign made?
+Expand Answers
2012-01-19CHAD ALDRIDGE: Made in Brasil. Contacted Nicholson about the difference in the foreign rasps - they claimed no change in production methods or materials. I'd been using them for about 8 years previous to the change, they were great to use. I now use French rasps... the "new" Nicholson are ok - I let my students use them, but I've found better.
2012-01-19SCOTT REEVES: The rasps I bought are made in Brazil. Primarily, I use them for shaping mahogany and cedro guitar necks. They excel at this task. I learned this method at a shop that had older American made rasps. So far, I can not tell the difference.
2012-01-19WALTER HOUGHTON: As far as I know they are made in the USA. They are good rasps, I know people that have had them for 10 are more years and still using them.
I have the 49 and 50 and they have worked well for me.
2012-01-21JOE DOW: I bought both the 49 and 50 rasps from Jamestown back in 2008 and they are made in the USA. I have used these extensively and they are still like new. These rasps are the best on the market. When I purchased these I did a fair amount of pricing and Jamestown had the best price. Grtea company to do business with.

2011-10-29RICHARD J SMITH: yes, you might try looking at Woodcraft or Rockler if Jamestown does not have them.
2011-10-30JAMES CALDWELL: You might try googling for "carving file" or search for "Auriou rasps". Could be that a set of rifflers is just what you need.

If you've never used a patternmakers rasp, then run, do not walk to get one. This site consistently has the best prices on this item and you should not be without this tool. You can spend a small fortune getting a "hand cut" rasp, but unless you are a novelty tool collector there is no reason to go elsewhere. The (mostly) random location of the cutting teeth is the key to controlling this tool--it won't pull itself into or away from the work, but allows you to guide it where YOU want. Get the #49 and the #50. You won't be sorry. Like all files and rasps, should be used with a handle, cleaned properly and stored not in contact with other cutting edges.

I use these for roughing in sculpted table legs or chair arms. The first file I received had a definite ridge down one side that made it unusable. When the replacement arrived it had a more subtle occurrence of the same problem. I was able to fettle it into a usable condition but have not had this problem with others. If this is an indication of a slip in QA for Nicholson, it will be a lot easier to add another $10 or $15 and move up to an Auriou or a Dragon.
Comments about Jamestown Distributors Cabinet Rasps:
I purchased #49 and #50 to use on my next flintlock project. The files remove wood very quickly and are easy to control.

Comments about Jamestown Distributors Cabinet Rasps:
Nicholson rasps #49+50 are the best mass manufactured rasps I know of. They are not as good as hand made random punched rasps but are 1/3 (or less with Jamestown discount) of the cost. I do my rough work with the Nicholson rasps and then finish with the really good (and expensive - up to $150 per rasp) tools. As I work with difficult woods (bubinga, coco bolo, satin wood etc) this saves my expensive rasps from a lot of wear. These Nicholson rasps represent a Best Buy

Comments about Jamestown Distributors Cabinet Rasps:
This rasp looks like a second quality; this is supposed to be one of the finest rasps available. The rasp is not straight, it is wavy and the end is bumpy and not smooth. The teeth seemed to be dull like someone used it on carbon fiber and sent it back or something. The handle that I ordered with it has a small black knot in it. I am not a happy camper

Comments about Jamestown Distributors Cabinet Rasps:
I probably bought these for different reasons than most, but guitar building is still intricate woodworking. They arrived unbelievably fast (thanks JamesTownDistributors, RI), but I was skeptical to see a "made in Brazil" stamp on the two files. From what I understand, Nicolson isn't making many "made in USA" products anymore. They outsourced to Mexico and Brazil. Anyway, I took these over to a world-renowned luthier who compared mine to his USA #49 and #50 from decades ago. There is a huge pattern difference. The older ones were hand-milled,the modern ones are machined. After he tested mine out on some aged northern hardrock maple, he assured me they cut just fine and there's nothing to worry about.
So all in all, I'm very pleased. Do not worry about where it's made as long as it works well and isn't made of that cheap, Asian-forged steel.

Comments about Jamestown Distributors Cabinet Rasps:
I make self bows and this tool is indispensable. Used in conjunction with the "card" cabinet scraper, it removes wood as fast or as slow as you need without leaving a washboard effect on the limbs of the bow. The "Nicholson" rasps you get at the big box stores can't compare!
