Questions & Answers about Gelcoat Repair Kit:
2013-05-04CHRIS BUSHMAN asked: Approximately how many small scratch repairs can you make with this kit?
+Expand Answers
2013-05-30MAYNARD GONTER: Depends on the color. I only used the white with very small amounts of red and blue mixed in. I filled several dock dings and a fan of small scratches about 4 inches long and still had half the tube left. It doesn't take alot. just be sure a properly prep the scratches. I used an old dental pick to freshen them up.
2013-05-30JOHN MONDANO: First you need to define what is small! If you are looking at three small scratches no deeper than 1/8" deep by 8" to 10" inches long this kit will work just fine. Anything larger will require more gelcoat. The good news is that they do give you a sufficant amount of color tint for several more applications of gelcoat. (just remember that the tint goes a long, long way and you only need to use extremely small amounts tint. Don't make the mistake of using to much tint you will have to throw away the small amount of gelcoat they give you. If your project is larger than described you will only need to buy more (white) gelcoat. You should have a lot of color tint left over.
2013-06-01THOMAS KELL: I cannot answer. I used the epoxy to reinforce a cracking and bowing basement wall. I used 2x4's with a notch cut and rebar epoxied into the notch to reinforce the wall. he 2x4's were epoxied to the block wall. The repair was secure and permanent.
2012-08-01MARC TOOTHMAN asked: Would this work for two small screw holes above the water line on the interior of a boat?
+Expand Answers
2012-08-02JOHN MONDANO: Yes, it will but before you attempt to fill the holes make sure you color mix a small test batch . I usually mix a very small amount (do not cover your repair area, just let it dry on a piece of white cardboard.) Once it is dry you will see the true color. You my have to make some adjustments to get the color right. When you are ready to make the repair put the point of a razor knife in the screw hole and twist it a few times. This will clean out the hole and give the gelcoat a rough surface to adhere too. You should also get some rough sand paper and twist it around the screw hole. Now you are ready to fill the hole. Just fill enough to cover the hole and still have a slight hump over the screw hole ( f it sinks in the hole you will have to sand it again and refill it). When it is dry you can sand and compound the repair. Once completed you should not be able to see the repair. Hope this helps, good luck
2012-08-02GARY STILLMAN: Hi there,
Yes it would work really well. I use the stuff below water make repairs on my drift boat.
2012-08-02JOSEPH BEST: I used the Gelcoat Repair Kit a few years ago to fix some chips on the exterior of the boat and it worked well. There are a number of steps that you need to perform to prepare the surface and sand and buff it out. As i recall the directions were good. It can all be done by hand so no special tools are needed. You do have to be proficient in mixing colors if that will be necessary.
2012-08-02CHALLEN BERTRAND: Yes this would work well to fill screw holes above or below the water line.
2012-08-02RICHARD BIGGS: I would say yes. I used it to repair some spider cracks in the bottom of a hot tub. Can't say that I did the best job of color matching to the existing tub, but the repairs are holding just fine.
2012-07-12TERRY T asked: What is the difference in polyester and gell coat and does it apply the same way?

2012-07-15JIM FOSTER: i used it on a surfboard and it works the same
2011-12-07A shopper asked: I need to gelcoat a rectangular area approximately 2" W by 6" long. This product looks like what I need, but is it enough to do the job?
+Expand Answers
2011-12-07ERIC STRANDJORD: Yes. For final finish or superficial work. (The stuff is pretty thick, and will need to be sanded.)
If you have to fill a hole, or work the gelcoat into any cloth, it won't be enough.
2011-12-07DANIEL LEE: To answer your question, it should be enough to cover. How ever, this stuff is made for scratches, not large areas, any thing with a demension over 1" you have a high risk of it cracking out quickly. But i have fixed many scratches over a foot long but only 1/4 inch wide. personally if the actual damaged area is 2x6 then it needs to be sprayed (if the boat is of any value), and to fix the 2x6 damage the area, the spray area will be close to 12x16 inches, unless you have some where to break up the line. But the pigment is good for tinting any polyester and most epoxy products, fyi a little yellow goes a long way.

2011-12-07DANIEL LEE: P.S. the prep is extremly important. And to clarify, be cautious about thicknesses more than 1/4" if you skim the 2x6 area properly (with proper prep) it will work, just might have a blend line.
2011-12-08WILLIAM VIGOR: I ended up selling the boat before I had a chance to use it. Sorry I wasn't much help.
2011-12-10CHRIS CONRAD: Hi - No, I would not recommend this kit for an area that large. If you really want to gel coat. I recommend you contact MiniCraft company. They sell gel coat in liquid form. They can color match exactly if you can send them a sample.
I just repaired my boat for an area about the size you have. I 1st wet sanded (1000 & 1500 grit) the entire bow area to bring back the original color. I then towed the boat over to a local automotive paint store, who used their color meter to get the exact tint formula.
They mixed up some automotive paint into a spray can. It matched perfectly. Of course, I had to buff the repair area out (as well as the enire bow because it had been wet sanded) to a high shine after the paint cured. . Total cost was $25. No one can find the repair but myself.
Works great! Application is easy and working time is great. Dries to a rock hard finish. The only difficult part is color mixing and matching it to your appplication.

Comments about Evercoat Gelcoat Repair Kit:
A wave pushed my floating jetski into a concrete boat dock causing 4 chips on the bottom. I bought this gelcoat kit. I read the directions 4 times before I started. This product is awesome. I have never used it before but the fix is un-noticable. After taking off the plastic sheet (after 1 hour), wet sand with the sandpaper provided, then go to a 300 grit and then a 2000 grit (using water with all sandpaper). Them go back with a 3m marine cleaner wax and the ending result is great! If you have an overlap of gelcoat you can even take a razor blade and gently scrape it off in between your sandings. The worse part of the whole fix is elbow grease! [...] I may even start my own side business with this product.

Comments about Evercoat Gelcoat Repair Kit:
The description does not state that this product is a paste! Also, once you open the package, the inside directions says not to apply over epoxy. I had already epoxyed the screw holes 2 weeks earlier. I sanded off the Animine?? layer and cleaned with acetone as recommended, it still did not adhere well. I would NOT have bought this had I known it was a paste. I bought the aerosol spray can kit with this, somebody at JD should have seen the connection, as to the 2 products I purchased.

For small repairs to my ski boat this was just the right product. It adhered well to the original gelcoat where I first applied the hardener, where the hardener was not applied first it did not stick.
