Questions & Answers about Braided Polyester Cord :
2012-06-06LOUANN TIMOCHENKO asked: whats besst for flag flying in the backyard?
+Expand Answers
2012-06-06ETTORE ZUCCARINO: Dacron braided rope is best. No elongation. Excellent wearability. and strength. Depending on the flag size, I would use 3/16" diameter.
2012-06-06BOBBY FOWLER: Hi Louann,
I can't answer your question about cord for flag flying, but I can say that this double braided polyester line is very tough. It has enough stiffness that makes it easier to handle (does not tangle easily). I use it for cranking cords on lawn equipment and pull rope cords on my trolling motors. It has served me well for this. I highly recommend double braided polyester when the cord needs to be tough and abrasive resistant.

2012-06-07DAN LLEWELLYN: This cord is very strong and UV resistant. It would work great on a flagpole
2012-04-24JOE COLARUSSO asked: can I use the 3/16 in. to tie to life rings ?
+Expand Answers
2012-04-24PETER OSSWALD: I would probably use something larger of the same spec, but it would depend on how much it is expected to be loaded during use. (Breaking Strengths often do not reflect things like fraying, wear, etc...) I've heard that having a working load of 20% of the breaking strength is acceptable before.
2012-04-24JOSEPH LAFRENIERE: While 1/8 cord may be OK to hang a life ring...from a hook or the like...I would not use it to tie to a life ring. First...if you mean for a victim in distress to grab on to...or for a life saver to haul in ...I would recommend something thicker and easier on the hand...less likely to cut and easier to grab.
You may also want to consider a line that floats .... this one does not...floating line could also be grabbed by a victim...and is less likely to foul a prop.
Good luck,
Joe LaFreniere
2012-05-02ROBERT ATKINSON: I would guess so. I use it for lines on my dinghy and it is strong and easy to work with.
2012-05-24GUY JOHNSON: Yes.
But to truly answer your question you'll need to guve us more information.
What are you going to tie to the life ring?
Are you going to use this cord to retrieve a thrown life ring?
2011-10-07CLIFF B asked: I need to confirm. This is 1/8", low or no stretch and I can burn to seal the ends? Thanks.
+Expand Answers
2011-10-07PETER OSSWALD: Yes. The cord has virtually no stretch, and burn-sealing the ends will work.
2011-10-07DAVID MCCALL: I didn't get the 1/8 but the 3/16 was actually 3/16 and had no problem sealing the ends with either a lighter or hot knife. it does stretch a bit but not a huge amount.
2011-10-07CHUCK SESOCK: I bought this cord to lace the T-top on my boat. I did not notice any stretch when I was lacing. After almost two years the T-top is still tight as a drum.
The ends were melted with a lighter and are still that way.
Chuck
2011-10-07CHARLES H. LEWIS: Yes, but do so carefully, so as not to result in rough charred fibers.
2011-10-07WILLIAM SAUNDERS: Cliff,
About a year ago I purchased a roll of this cord. Yes, it is 1/8 " cord that is quite strong for its small diameter. It is polyester (aka dacron) and is relatively low stretch. It is not no-stretch, since it is braided and will have some give. I would estimate that a 4 ft length will stretch about 1/4 to 1/2 inch depending on the load.
Being polyester, you can easily melt the ends with a hot knife or by burning. If you use a lighter to melt the ends as I do, I would suggest that you hold the cord with a bunched up piece of rag and let a couple of inches protrude from the rag. Heat the tip of the end protruding from the rag until it is well melted and then pull the end through the rag. This will give the melted end a nice shape and will size it the same size as, or smaller, than the cord. If you don't do this, you will end up with a hard irregularly shaped blob on the end of the cord that is not streamlined. BTW, pull the hot melted end through the rag without getting any of the melted plastic on yourself. As you probably know, it is hot and will burn you if not careful.
Hope this helps.

2011-10-08PHILLIP TUCKER: Yes. It is a tight braide, low stretch line that you can burn/melt the ends to seal. Absolutely wonderful line to use on boat....and everything else. Always have a piece of this line in my pocket when sailing!
2011-10-08BOBBY FOWLER: Hi Cliff,
This is a very, very low stretch cord with a very firm finish. It is also a strong cord. I find it very useful. It is kinda stiff because of the hard braiding but this hard braiding makes it very wear resistant. Yes, you can burn the ends to stop it from raveling.

2011-10-09FRANK SCHIOLA: I doesn't seem to stretch much. Although I didn't heat the ends, one end of the length I received was sealed with heat.
2011-10-09ERIC LOFTFIELD: Yes it is 1/8 inch or very close to it.
Yes it is low strech.
Yes you can melt the ends.
Eric
2011-10-10ROB SHARFF: I cannot say whether it's low, or no stretch, but it is the higher density, tighter woven braid than typically found, and it can be heat whipped. I used it for webbing on my lifelines.
Hoped this helped.

Comments about New England Ropes Braided Polyester Cord:
This is great cord. We used it to set 100's of buoys for a rowing race. It is stiff enough to tie nicely and has a tightly braided cover. Other similar braided nylon ropes are flimsy. Also used for permanent lanyards for temporary lights with a slip prussing knot that works well.Great stuff. Durable spool...another brand from another supplier came on a plastic spool that broke and rendered it useless for in the boat buoy setting conditions.

Great for scout knot projects like Turk's head and monkey's fist. Has a stiffness that helps the scouts make the knots but not too stiff that if is a problem to work with.
