2013-02-20TED BAYER: Needling hand. Last spring I pushed needles through 3 layers of sail cloth & 2 of webbing to sew my bolt rope at the head of the sail.
In 3 hours of the repair I broke ay least 3 needles but the palm protected my hand perfectly. It was HARD pushing!
2013-02-20PAUL PRING: I ordered a palm and some sailmakers twine for whipping rope ends. Unfortunately after waiting 2 months, I had still not received the goods, which were on back order. I therefore canceled and purchased from a competing supplier in Dedham. I cannot rate the service as it did not work for me.
2013-02-21JAMES PERRY: The sail palm is used on your dominant hand to push the needle through the canvas or leather. Good luck with your project.
2013-02-23SUSAN SARGUT: If you ae right hand - use it on your right hand. Push the needle through and use the gadget to push the needle through the tougher material. Works well.
The sharp edge on the leather strap needed to be trimmed so that it did not dig into the back of my hand. I also treated the leather with neatsfoot oil to soften and preserve the leather.

Excellent tool, a must for any seaman. The newer ones have the thimble held down with a plastic guard. The old ones used raw hide. As a traditionalist I was disappointed with the move to plastic. My old one lasted over 30 years and only broke down due to my lack of attention. We'll have to see how the new one holds up. Wish I had paid more attention to the original.
