2012-09-28PHILLIP TUCKER: My guess is 50 to 60 yards long. I have not taken it off the spool and measured it, mind you. But it is certainly enough to probably last my life time of serving needs (which means the biggest threat for me is misplacing it). Hope this helps.
2012-10-03SUSAN SARGUT: It is a good size spool. I whipped a few lines and mended the edge of a sail and still have lots left. Exact length - not sure. If you need a lot buy 2 and save the postage for second later.

2012-01-03WILLIAM BOGGS: I can only say more than I'll ever use. I bought this to whip the ends of some new running rigging and with that job done, I can't really tell there is any of the product gone.
I keep the spool on board for emergencies but don't think I'll ever see the end of the roll in my sailing lifetime.

I bought my whipping thread to whip the ends of the shore lines and sheets on my Catalina 22 sailboat. The end of each line took no more than 6" of whipping thread. So a bobbin's worth, maybe 3 yards, was oodles.

2012-01-03JEFFREY MORRILL: I really don't know. The invoice only specifies that there is 1 ounce of waxed thread. There is clearly enough for my needs.
2012-01-05DAVID HEATH: I do not know how many yards are on these rolls . If you phone the store, they are always very helpful, but if they do not know I would make a wild guess of 50 to 100 yards. I would assume from the photo that this is the most common size (at least when I buy it) and that it lasts me for several years. Like 5 or more yrs. So, unless you are using a LOT of it, even if someone has a huge roll at less per yard, do you really want a giant sized roll that you pass on to your grand children?
We prefer the brown, but they have white. We use it for many things and have for 40 yrs. Being waxed, it ties more securely, whether knots or lashings. And does not slip as easily. We MUCH prefer this waxed polyester (I assume that is what this is). The original waxed linen of our grand fathers will rot from damp. The polyester will never rot from damp, but the sun will degrade it eventually. (After a few years.) The sun eats the linen also.
Back to the size, you could Google around and see if you can find others selling it that sell this size roll. But make sure that this photo is representative. Sometimes, vendors sell a bigger roll, but use a stock photo of a small roll.

"Mac" packaged my shipment, and it was packed to survive Armegeddon, plus a cautionary note that a sharp needle was in the package.

This product looks like, feels like, and works like the same great waxed whipping thread I used as a young lad when I lived in Duxbury, MA back in the 40s through the 60s and did all my sailing, splicing, etc.

I have a home decorating project going that includes 4 ropes, hooked at the ceiling, suspending a partial ladder above a table. This thread allowed me to whip the ropes. It was perfect and easy to work with.
