Questions & Answers about Taylor Made Big B Inflatable Fenders: 2013-06-12 EARL GROSS asked: I just received an order from Jamestown I thought was for a sale price for a 2-pack 8"x20" Taylor Big B fenders, which I was alerted to by email. Apparently the sale applied ONLY to the white fneders - not for other colors, but one would have to read the sale info very carefully to determine this was the case. Jamestown charged me $71.61 plus shipping for the single fender, a price that is most definitely NOT a "sale" price for such a fenders that retails for $57.74 and can be found through other dealers for around $40.00 for the black model (ie: Atlantic Boat Supply, Boat Store USA, SJK Products). What gives!? Usually when Jamestown issues a "sale" price email for an item it is indeed a very good value - not a price representing a premium above retail list of more than 24 percent. At least a 10" and 12" would be best! 2011-09-07 DAVID VANSICE: Fran, It depends on many factors. Here goes: 1. What location (sea, lake or river) will you be using the fenders? The larger the waves, the larger your fender needs to be. 2. Are you rafting to another boat? If so, then the fender needs to be long enough to cover the difference in height. 3. Shape of your boat where it mates to the other surface? This means if the hull is sloping away from the dock , as is usual where the dock is low, then you need a long as well as larger diameter fender so it does not ride up onto the dock and become ineffective. 4. Waves and wind. When the wind and/or waves are more extreme you will need larger fenders. I have a 32' power boat and cruise in the Ohio River. I chose the 8" X 20 " size due to the above. Remember, there is also the round ball type of fender which can also be effective for your style boat. I have 5 fenders and have used all of them when rafting to another yacht. I only use 2 at my dock because it is in a sheltered area. There is no perfect answer to your question only a well thought out plan on how to use the fender(s). Staggering the heights will allow you to use smaller sizes under normal conditions. 2011-09-08 JOSEPH LOJKO: if you go to the Taylor site, they have some recommendations on boat size and technically, your 40' boat would require the 10" x 26" size. But it really depends on how you are using them and what you want. I personally feal that bigger is better and I am using the biggest size (12" 24") for a 24' boat. But beware that these are line-through fenders. I am using these strung horizontally along a dock. The point is that the more diameter, the more air space between your vessel and whatever you are tied up to. There may be cases where you want less space. For instance, you want to walk between two vessels, and therefore you'd like the keep the gap between them relatively small. But if you are tieing up to a dock for unattended periods, I recommend the largest size. The other obvious size concern is if you have to store these on your vessel. good luck. 2011-09-08 CRAIG LAMBIE: I purchased my fenders for my 40 foot power boat which has a much higher freeboard. I love the 12 inch version as the boat weighs 13 tons, I have 2 of these. I do also use the 10 x 24 inch version which I think would be the ideal size for a 40 foot sailboat.
