Questions & Answers about Sikaflex 295i UV:
2013-02-07KEN AYERS asked: I have a catamaran with large windows around the main salon. They are seals with a black sealant. I need to re bed each of them - 6 large windows. They take a lot of sea water and sun. What product do you recommend?
+Expand Answers
2013-02-07ROBERT HOMAN: I highly recommend the Sikaflex 295UV!! I rebedded all of the windows on our GulfStar trawler....with the 295UV in black.... The product performs as stated, and does stand up perfectly to the sun. We are in SW FL...the bedding is now over a year old...and there has been no chalking, leakage, or any other problems with the product.
2013-02-07Ken Ayers: Did you use the primer its very expensive when you did your windows
2013-02-08ROBERT HOMAN: Frankly, no I did not. My windows are all safety glass..... I balked at the price as well...and since I was bedding the frames and the windows were glass...I did not believe I needed it. I have turned out to be correct. I cleaned the frames free and clear of previous bedding compound, then I cleaned both the frames and windows thoroughly with acetone...then used the 295UV. If you use the 295UV, its very easy to work, and it helps to use a caulk smoothing tool too make smooth runs and force the product into place, and it will help make good corners.
Make sure you mask the frame's edge to the glass and mask the glass where you want the product to end. Try not to spread the product over the masking... A really thin coat won't hurt...over the tape edge, but if its too heavy when you unmask it will not be smooth.
2013-02-07GLENN ROGERS: Remember that the Black and White colors of Sikaflex295UV indicate different products, not aesthetics! They work with different plastics. I used black with the primer and cleaner because I was sealing LEXAN to powder coated aluminum, and it's working great -- but make sure you choose the one that works with the plastic you're going to use. Watch the videos. It was not as hard as I thought it would be.
2013-02-08EDWARD MOORE: I used Sikaflex 295UV to rebel the fixed acrylic ports on my C & C 29. Be sure to use the primer and follow the instructions. My results have been quite good.
2013-02-08DENNIS WOODRIFF: Yes, I have used Sikaflex 295UV and it was excellent for sealing port lights on my fiberglass Ranger. I removed the factory "windows" or portlights and replaced them with Lexan polycarbonate. Make sure all is clean so adhesive sticks well, use tape to protect the area, clean with laquer thinner. - Dennis
2013-01-09ROWLAND GROENEWALD asked: can sikaflex 295 uv be used under the waterline for sealing skin fittings?
+Expand Answers
2013-01-09matt taylor: it is not rated for below the water line use.
2012-12-26A shopper asked: If I only use part of the tub, is there a way I can seal it off so that I can use the rest of it at a later date?
+Expand Answers
2012-12-26GLENN ROGERS: My tube stayed good for a week -- I didn't try after that. I kept it capped and inside a sealable baggie. I used it a bit every day, and just had to clean out the nozzle once.
2012-12-27JOSEPH HOPKINS JR: I have used my Food Saver vacuum bags to preserve open tubes of Sikaflex and 3M 5200. The caulk will keep for months once the bag is evacuated and sealed.
2012-12-27ROBERT HOMAN: My personal experience is that after you have used part of a tube of Sika 295UV...if you insert a bolt or screw into the plastic nose and wrap it with saran wrap, and put a rubber band around the wrap, then you will be able to use the rest of the tube up to a couple of days later.
2012-11-05RON V asked: will it adhere to stainless steel?
+Expand Answers
2012-11-05MEL BUCKLEY: I don't know about adhereing to stainless but it does a great job on port lights.
2012-11-05STEVE CODER: I can't say, but it adhered to aluminum nicely. It is not good for plastic, however, as after 2 attempts to seal hatches (polycarb to alum), it leaked.
2012-11-05J PATRICK MCCRARY: Ron,
Sikaflex will adhere very well to all materials, including stainles steel, if the the surface has been cleaned well, and both the Sikaflex activator and primer are used. Like any product, adherance is only as good as the prep you put into it...
Capt Patrick McCrary
2012-11-05RICHARD ALLEN: I Believe it will if you use the etching compound first.
2012-11-05ALLAN STERN: I would assume it would since they use it in boat and portholes to keep water leakes from happening. My use was plexiglass and steel not specifically stainless. With the correct prep cleaner and adhesion promoter I think it would work.
2012-11-06GLENN ROGERS: Ron, According to the Sikaflex Marine Application Guide, Sikaflex 295 UV will bond polycarbonate to both Stainless Steel and Aluminum: "Pretreat the substrate with Sika® Aktivator 206 or Sika® Aktivator 205, using a clean, lint-free rag or a paper towel. Change the rag frequently! Sika® Aktivator must be applied with the wipe on/wipe off method.Flash-off: 10 minutes (min) to 2 hours (max)." I am bonding my Lexan to Powdercoat paint. Be sure to check the videos on the JD website and also on Youtube. The Sika website is hard to navigate, but that's where I got my info originally. Glenn Rogers
2012-11-07QUINTON RITZ: I have no experience with it and stainless. My application was Plexiglass to fiberglass gelcoat. The plexiglass was held to the fiberglass by stainless screws, with the sikaflex acting as a sealant. it was on a horizontal surface exposed to the weather and the sikaflex sealed the window successfully.
2012-07-18JIM MARTIN asked: Will this be suitable as sealant and bedding compound for port lights of Lexan to fiberglass?
+Expand Answers
2012-07-19Nathan Fournier: Yes, this is a good choice for that application, however you will need to also use the "SIK-209D" primer as well. However, there is another product by Marine Tex called Flex-set "TRA-3071u", that can be used without any primers, thank you.
2012-04-23BILL POST asked: Will the white Sikaflex 295uv be a good "off-white" color match for Sea Ray's white gelcoat???
+Expand Answers
2012-04-24RICHARD ALLEN: bill,
Sorry don't know.
2012-04-24RICHARD ALLEN: Bill,
As I wrote earlier I don't know but it is paintable.
2012-11-06GLENN ROGERS: Bill,
Be careful! The difference between 295UV White and Black is one of chemical composition -- they are used to bond different materials!! Don't select on the basis of color, as I found out to my own disappointment. For example, black is used for polycarbonate, and white won't work! Both can be painted later to the color you want.

2011-10-11WILLIAM CLIFFORD: I used Sikaflex 295UV to repair a leak between a glass window and its aluminum frame. It has worked for 3 years. The wet caulk is easy to shape.
2011-10-12CLIFFORD H. SPOHR: Hi.
You need to get with the people at Jamestown and tell them 1. what kind of material the windows/hatches will be, and what the frame is made of.
The silkaflex U295 is made for lexan and requires a special primer.
3M also makes a variety of sealers. So call the guys at Jamestown and talk to them. The 3M site will make you crazy trying to find the right compound.

2012-12-27ROBERT HOMAN: I used the Sika 295UV in black to rebed all of the windows on our trawler. 3 large front windows, port and stbd sides have multiple windows.... all windows are glass. Since the windows are glass and not lexan...I did not use the primer. I did a good cleaning of the glass with acetone and the same on the aluminum frames. I have had no issues with the seal on any windows...and the job still looks like someone knew what they were doing. Best part though, is that the product does actually stand up to the Florida sun! No powdering, no streaking from rain or dew....!!
This stuff is thick. I used a cheap caulking gun and my hands really got a workout squuezing the stuff out. Get a good caulking gun!

Comments about Sikaflex 295i UV:
I agree with the others as to the messiness of the product...especially if you aren't careful with it, or fail to tape and mask your work areas. Other than that...It does the job extremely well, and it was easy to use. I have re-bedded the windows on our trawler and they turned out great. I like the fact that after 6 months in the Florida sun much of it summer and full exposure to the sun...there has been zero fade, bleeding of color, peeling, or separation. I am very pleased with this product and the way it turned out!!

Comments about Sikaflex 295i UV:
Watch the video and look carefully at the plastic tip before cutting so you understand the upside down V. Try on a test board first. Its not difficult but merits some practice. The actual installation went smoothly. Ended up with clean lines and water tight seal. I used four screws in corners rather than the ten I'd taken out on my Catalina.

Comments about Sikaflex 295i UV:
I replaced my screwed in acrylic windows with Makrolon (Lexan with abrasion resistant coating) and used the Sikaflex 226 cleaner, 209 primer and 295 UV adhesive and the results were unbelievable! I did not have to use the screws again making it an even cleaner install. Only advice I can give is tape it off well so when you remove the tape and paper your left with a nice trim line around the windows. This product works very well!!

Installed 16 acrylic windows in my homebuilt boat with this stuff, following instructions for sanding edge of acrylic, and priming. Tools easily into a smooth bead. Most of the work is in the prep for this use. Boat has been in the weather for 5 years now without any problems with window seal or adhesion.

Comments about Sikaflex 295i UV:
I don't agree that Sikaflex has a good website. Had to switch between two areas to get the istallation picture. A comprehensive sheet would be nice. Messy, you should mask off adjacent areas with newspaper or plastic and have a good supply of wiping rags or paper for the "tooling" finger. Make sure you have thin gloves that are not going to fall apart (mine) for your tooling. This can replace screws.

Comments about Sikaflex 295i UV:
I used this product along with Sika Cleaner 226 and Sika Primer 209 to bond four acrylic/plexiglass windows. The results look very solid. It is messy, so don't skimp on the masking tape. Here's a link to the instructions that I used: [@]. You'll want to print these as the directions on this three step process are not detailed on any of the containers.

Used 295 uv along with the cleaner and primer to bond polycarbonate windows in my 26 ft boat. Worked like a charm but its messy so mask off the areas you don't want this stuff to stick to. Sika has a great web site with directions. Follow them and you will get great results.
