Questions & Answers about Thru Hull Step Wrench 1/2 inch - 1-1/2 inches:
2011-11-28A shopper asked: Will this wrench work on Spartan thru hulls mushroom tyupe ?
+Expand Answers
2011-11-29PETER FOSTER: I am not familiar with that brand thu hull.
2011-11-29DUART SNOW: I used our wrench on a standard 1-inch mushroom type thru-hull. As long as the thru-hull has the usual two tabs inside for the wrench to grab, it should work.
2011-11-29DAVID LEGRAND: I found that this tool did not work as the sizing is not for a plastic thru hull, but a brass one. I found an easier solution was to use a tappered file turned by a channel lock. If bedded with 5200, use a little heat and it will easily come out.
2011-11-29GEORGES ROUTHIER: Sorry for the english langage
It work well for true hull with ears inside - the ears had to be not to far inside.
With a through-hull, ears broke - a metal plate about 1 / 4 inch thick at an appropriate width, with a normal wrench, did the job better this special wrench.
2011-11-29WALTER SIMMONS: Thw wrench did not fit the Groco thru-hulls I was using. I don't know about Spartans.
2011-11-29DAVID LUSTY: Hi. I havn't used one on a Spartan thru hull. It works great on a basic thru hull such as a sink drain etc.
2011-11-30GIL ANSPACHER: I do not know about spartan. The thru-hull must have the keys in place (rectangular ridge on opposite sides of the inside of thruhull). If they do, this works great for removal. Though, removal is often done when the TH is bad and thus they are cut/ground out. For installs, this was a great tool. You can even rig a long lever to secure it from the outside so one person can do the job.
Hope this helps!
2011-11-30DAVID PAKES: Giday,
Greetings from Sydney Australia. Thanks for your email and you might be interested to know that I sent you feedback shortly after I received and used this tool. You never published it and so, unsurprisingly, I wasn't happy at the time. Anyway, I've forgotten exactly what I put in it but it was something like this.
It's a very useful and heavy duty tool, for both removal (without destruction) and for putting in a new thru hull fitting. I seem to recall the advertising blurb mentions that the tool is not suitable for removal but that's simply not correct. Provided there are the raised edges/lips/whatever on the inside of the piping so that the tool can grasp them then I don't think the name brand would be important. I didn't know my boat's fitting brands, before I purchased the tool, as they were covered in paint and there was no brand name embossed etc on the fitting. Come to think of it, I've never seen any brand names on thru hull fittings and this is my fifth keel boat. Anyway, my thru hulls came out easily and undamaged so it's worth a try as it costs a lot less than paying someone else to do it for you. The alternative is to grind the flush heads off, providing they're not countersunk.
Hope this helps.
Cheers
Dave

2011-12-01DAVID GRECO: Yes, from what I can see on Spartan's web site pictures, and knowing what the tool actually looks like. What you can't see from the picture of the tool are the small groves cut into each of the steps on the tool which grip onto the tabs on the thru-hull. I just visited Spartan's web site and looked at their thru-hulls and you can clearly see one of the two tabs inside the thru-hill. Great tool.

Worked great to install new 3/4" thru hull. Haven't tried it yet, but looks like it would also work for thru hull removal

Comments about Buck Algonquin Thru Hull Step Wrench 1/2 inch - 1-1/2 inches:
I bought this wrench to help remove and install new thru hulls. (Note that the description plainly states that it is not for "removal"). If I could have had enough room inside of the bilge for the thru-hull removal, the wrench might have worked but we ended up just grinding the mushrooms off the thru-hulls and then using the tool for the reinstall. Worked great and we (two person tool only, one on the boat inside and one outside holding the tool with a monkey wrench) were able to quickly reinstall new thru-hulls. Couldn't have done it without this tool.

I found it very useful both to put in thru hulls and also to remove them - I don't know why the manufacturer says it is not suitable for removing thru hulls. It's robust, heavy duty and does what it's designed for.

If the thru-hull is old, its knobs/keys that the wrench locks into may be gone. Then the wrench is useless and you either try vice grips or a grinder and grind off the ring of the TH. For an install, the tool was VERY helpful to tighten the TH from the outside where there was not room for a wrench on the inside nut.
