Our West System Epoxy kit contains everything you need to tackle epoxy repairs and fiberglassing projects. Both epoxy kits come with the WSY-300 standard plunger pump, but are compatible with the 306-25 and 309 Pumps. The Resin to Hardener ratio for the 105B Kits is 5:1 by either weight or volume. When combined with 105 Resin in a five-part resin to one-part hardener ratio, the cured resin/hardener mixture yields a rigid, high-strength, moisture-resistant solid with excellent bonding and coating properties. These kits are not intended for clear coating.

2012-06-20GARY STEVENS: That depends on what type of finish it has now, ie clear varnish or paint. If clear varnish, I might suggest Epifanes varnish. I have used this product for years and find it is the best over West epoxy above the waterline. If paint, the Epifanes topside paints are excellent. If you have the expertise to use a sprayed catalyzed paint, the Awlgrip is excellent for use above the waterline. Bottom paint should be used below the waterline. There are some "hard", racing-type bottom paints that work really well and can be rolled and brushed.

I don't know if it is waxed or not waxed but it is pretty thin and runs easily. I usually have to thicken it with lime when I need to work on more vertical areas or on rotten areas. I use it on a wooden boat (vs. fiberglass). I do like it and I think it performs well.
2012-04-10ARCHITECTURAL OPENINGS: We use the West System Epoxy, mostly, for undercoating wooden sills for doors. We apply it in a horizontal position.
However, we have a couple of side projects going making canoes and will be coating it to fiberglass in a vertical position.
You may want to try adding the colloidal silica to control the viscosity.
I will keep you posted, if you like.
2012-02-24SAM LEWIS asked: I am always looking for a more effective way to 1) fill pores in open grained wood prior to lacquering and 2) apply veneer. I am wondering about trying epoxy on both these problems. I am tired of using contact cement for the veneer, especially large area, because of the instant tack. As far as filling open grained wood, I am always ready to find an effective method that is less labor intensive than paste filler. Any ideas?

2012-02-21JIM BROWN: It all depends on what the outside temperature is.
2012-02-21GARY STEVENS: I have been using WEST Epoxy since the early 1980s.
I use WEST epoxy for both guitar building and boat building. This glue excels in gluing the more waxy woods, like the rosewoods fretboards. (Just use some alcohol to remove the surface wax right before gluing.)
To answer your question, this is very much dependent on the ambient air temperature and whether or not there is direct sunlight on the situation.
Normally, I'll usually use the slow hardener because I am usually in no big hurry to have the epoxy kick off and I can use the long open time to my advantage, then clamp (or staple) and just let the glued assembly sit for 8 hours, or so. The slow generally gives me an hour before it starts to noticeably thicken.
Once, I was applying mahogany strips to a boat deck in the summer in 90 degree temperature with full sun. I was using WEST graphite powder to effect 1/8" black lined between the strips. The black color made the epoxy kick off and foam up as I was mixing it, so I had to move the epoxy containers to the shade and place the containers in ice water.
So, the answer is, it depends on temperature and sun. Typically, the working time is a little longer than the stated time. The transition from very liquid to syrup to peanut butter is much more gradual than polyester resin.

2012-02-21CURTIS PATTILLO: It's all about temperature. When it's winter time, the "fast" hardener can take up to 2 hrs to cure. When it's summer, it can take only 1/2 hour. Another factor is the quantity mixed, the larger the batch mixed up, the faster the chemistry works.
2012-02-21ALEXANDER NANAI: For the epoxy to set properly and develop maximum strength, you ned to have 15 to 20 minutes of working time. Any shorter time and it may get brittle; longer times may not fully cure. For simple repairs, the use of 205 vs. 206 is strictly based on what temperature you're working in. Remember that thick lay-up of glass/resin at one session will increase the heat and shorten working times.
2012-02-21CHARLES ANDREWS: To be honest I am not sure of the difference. I pick one or the other based on the external temoerature. If you were to use 205 in hot weather it would set up quickly probably within 20 minutes whereas 206 wpould take longer in hot weather.
2012-02-22MICHAEL GOLDSTONE: My experience with the West resin with 205 and 206 hardeners is in forming bendable plywood by layering one bendable layer upon another with the West 2-part epoxy in between. Clamp this "sandwich" to your custom bending jig to form the curved shape you desire and let dry overnight with the 205 hardener and 1-2 days with the 206. The working time was more than adequate for me-- I am an amateur woodworker and I work slow. (I could never make a living doing woodworking projects.) The "open" time for me was at least 30 minutes with the 205 in my basement shop at temp about 68F (I used a thick layer of epoxy). I also did same project first with the 206 hardener. Since I got the clamps/cauls on within about 30 minutes I did not need to stay with the 206, which I think offered me about 45 minutes of open time. Note that the "sandwich" described has remained rigid (no flex-back or "creep" at all) after more than 3 years.

2012-01-30roger shields: 6 yards (roll of 42" +/- wide) of cloth should handle one layer on inside or outside. Double that for both.
1 gal epoxy and 1 qt. hardener should be enough for the 6 yards but may not be enough for both depending on your wetting out method and wastage from batches made to large.
This work will be messy so be prepared with gloves and drop clothes.

2012-01-30MARTIN PATTON: About 11 yards of 50" wide cloth. Start with the gallon kit of epoxy and hardener with metering pumps. You can use the 3 yard piece of cloth that comes with the kit to double up on the outside bottom. Use gloves, eye protection and long sleeves, don't get the uncured epoxy on your skin. Cover something small for practice if you are doing this for the first time. My canoe is 18'6" and I think I had to buy an additional quart kit of resin and hardener. Good luck.

I've never had to repair anything using fiberglass and this kit made my first experience simple. The kit comes with and idiot guide and were easy to follow. Only negative point is, I wish the kit would have come with a few yards of woven roving.

As a first time wooden boat builder, I tried two other epoxy resins before finding West system resins. The others only wasted time and money. There is no comparison. The pumps make a perfect mix everytime. It goes on easier than anything else I tried. It dried quickly and evenly. It is simply the best to use and goes on perfect everytime.

My Dad built a Popular Science Redwood canoe in the '70s. I am trying to make it look good and useable again. This stuff handles all my adhesive needs as well as adding structural integrity to somewhat degraded Redwood. I am also using it for my fiberglass repairs on Polyurethane Resin. I also have an early '70s Chrysler TriHull that needs bottom repairs & this is the product.

I use epoxies and adhesives daily in my "regular" job. I have never used a product that was this good. The West System 105 resin is the best I ever used. It is easy to apply, provides more surface area coverage, and dries to a tack free surface faster than any other resin I have used. I also like the blush free finish after it is fully cured. I highly recommend the West System products
