2012-08-02RAY VOSPER: I've used a variety of random orbit sanders for some thirty years and this is BY FAR the best I've used. As I list the things I like, keep in mind that I consider these features to be significantly better than the other brands I've used.
User replaceable power cord. Take brand PC, D, or B to a repair shop to have the cord replaced and get ready to pay near the purchase price of the tool, Also the cord is longer than most which is a great feature.
Use any vibrating sander for long periods of time and the joints in your hand will ache. I wear the fingerless weightlifters gloves with the padded palms (or similar cycling gloves). Both go a long way towards protecting your hands and still allow you to feel the surface as you sand. That said, the Festool is the smoothest random orbit sander I've used. The gloves are available from W mart for about 10 bucks.
Dust collection on this sander is great, sort of. I connected mine to a generic shop vac and needed to jerry rig the connection because of differing diameters between the tool and the vac. The little paper bag thingy that comes with it is junk. Lose it.
The Festol proprietary sand paper is excellent. There are varieties for stripping paint, sanding wood, and metal as well as some others. They are part of the reason the dust collection works so well (with a vac).
Lastly, there's the warranty. I am brutal on tools and Festool has a policy of free 2-way shipping for the first year.
I'm confident this tool will do the job you describe quite well. If you're going to be sanding a lot of rounded surfaces you might consider the optional, softer sanding pad that is designed for curved surfaces. It makes a difference. I'm on my third wooden boat with this sander and I fiberglass all my hulls!

After using a Demo unit for a week, I have given up on the Merka line of sanders. Merka sanders are great, but they come with allot of noise and vibration. Dust extraction with the Festool sanders is second to none! You would never go back after using one for a little while.

Finally I can machine sand with 220 between varnish coats without swirl marks and breaking through finish. This lightweight finish sander is dust free, swirl free and reduces sanding time between multiple varnish coats by 50% over hand sanding. I have all of the Fein dust free sanders and there is just no comparison. The Festool Sanders are truly revolutionary and a must have for anyone who works on wooden boats and who does finish work with varnish and lacquer

I use mine for sanding fiberglass on small boat hulls and love the dust extraction system. (That stuff is nasty!) I changed the sanding pad for the first time in two years of hard use and didn't like the odd screw head that holds it. minor gripe. Can't overemphasize the importance of using dust extraction and this tools system works very well with a vacuum.Best feature in my mind? [...]

Needs more power. This sander is great for detailed work above 180 grit. It is not agressive at all but great for fine to very fine sanding. Festool need something in between the RO 125 FEQ Rotex Sander and this sander.
