Spray
Number of Coats: 1 or 2
Dry Film Thickness per coat: 0.8 mils (2.6 wet mils)
Application Temp: 20Deg F. Min., 90Deg F. Max.
APPLICATION INFORMATION
Stir 2018 Clear Sealer before application. 2018 Clear Sealer may
be applied by brush, conventional or airless spray. Thinning is not
normally required although on very warm days use Pettit 120
Brushing Thinner at 5-10% by volume to ease brushing and
maintain good flow. When spraying, use Pettit 121 Spraying
Thinner up to 20% by volume. Spray an even, wet coat to
minimize orange peel. Do not apply 2018 Clear Sealer on extremely
humid days or when rain is threatening. Do not apply in
the late afternoon when working outdoors as the wet film may be
adversely affected by dew. On fir or any wood that has a large
hard grain pattern wipe with dry rags while the sealer is wet to
remove the excess from the hard grain areas. 2018 Clear Sealer
is not completely absorbed into the hard grain.
SURFACE PREPARATION
Wood must be clean, dry and properly prepared prior to varnishing
or painting. When sanding wood, always sand with the grain. Use
a vacuum, air hose, or tack rag to remove all traces of sanding
residue. Follow all surface preparation steps carefully, avoiding
shortcuts. Inadequate surface preparation will virtually assure
inadequate performance.

2013-06-14JOANNE COURTICE: We used this sealer on our sailboat and it is great. We use it as part of the yearly maintenance on the teak.
2013-06-05JANE SMITH asked: Will this product work if there's any residual paint left on the surface of the wood? I just sanded down an old wooden boat, but not all the paint will come off without starting to rip into the wooden planks. There are areas of raw wood and areas with paint still left on. Do I only use this on the raw wood or can I paint the whole boat with it? Thanks!

2013-06-05DONALD BERG: Its easy to brush on. I'd go ahead and cover any painted areas. Then do the raw wood. So do the whole boat.
2013-06-05DOUG HOUGHTON: Hi--I not really sure what you are sanding on--is this a plywood boat?? Are you going to paint the boat or varnish??
I,m going to guess you are going to paint the boat--there are better products by Pettit for this----I use clear sealer when I start to build up Varnish --like on Hacker and Chris-Craft---I hope this help abit---go to Pettit web site--they can help too---good luck

2013-06-06Jane Smith: The boat is mainly oak. It's an old runabout with a painted hull and varnished decking. I wanted to take it to bare wood and seal it, but the paint in places held on better than expected, and I didn't want to have to eat into the wood to get it off. The wood is very thirsty which is why I was thinking about using the Old Salem first, then a coat of primer, then paint. I wasn't sure though if the Old Salem would work properly in the areas that had that thin layer of paint on it!
2013-06-07WILLIAM EKSTROM: Yes, it will work even if there's residual paint. We use this product for many applications. We use it as a first coat after wood filler, stain, etc. on the mahogany after waiting 48 hours before applying. We use it for sealing the boat bottom and boot to reduce drying out during winter storage. For this use, we thin the Clear Sealer 30% with mineral spirits. In the Spring we sand or scuff with scotch brite pads and then apply bottom paint. With this product you don't get the build up that requires future stripping. We have been using this product on our 1946 Hinckley 21 for over 30 years. It's a great product.
2012-07-29MICHAEL D asked: Is there a way to apply 2018 in high humidity and have it dry in a reasonable amount of time? I am using it on White Oak and Aquatek plywood as a sealer and plan on using Easypoxy high-build varnish as the finish. I am trying to finish my project on my clients schedule but the weather is not cooperating. Any help is greatly appreciated.

2012-07-29LAWRENCE HOUGH: Michael. I recently had the same problem. I would find the 2018 still tacky after drying overnight. I found that putting the work outside in the sun caused it to dry within an hour or two. . I also found that the second coat dried better than the first, likely due to the fact that it was more on the surface than soaked into the wood.
I subsequently finish with Z Spar 2015 or 1015 and obtain better results when using the 2018 first.
I also find that I obtain a harder, more level finish, and can complete assembly sooner, if I wait at least two days between coats of Z Spar varnish rather than waiting only one day between coats of varnish. If I apply four coats of varnish, one every day, sanding with 220 between coats, the varnish stays somewhat soft for a couple weeks, delaying assembly and use. This is particularly true in humid weather.
2012-12-19Michael D: Lawrence,
Thanks for your reply. I'll try your suggestion once the humid weather rolls around to Cape Cod next summer.
Have an excellent Holiday,
Michael
2012-07-30DONALD BERG: I'm not likely to be helpful, here. I use2018 for sealing any of my boats before painting. But I live in Montana and it is drier than a bone, here.
If you are in a garage, can you add some space heaters and fans to raise the temp and create a breeze? Your doors should be partially open, regardless.
Best!
2012-07-30KIM HURLBUT: hi,
humidity is not your friend. you can try to put a fan in the room. but do not blow directly on the sealer. the fan can put waves in the sealer .the waves will show when dry. good luck.
2012-09-03SAM GORDON: Sorry, I don't know for sure. Possibly a fan might be the simplest thing. Just to keep air moving over the surface of the wood to help remove evaporative component.
2011-12-04WILLIAM RICHARDS asked: Can I use Pettit Old Salem 2018 clear sealer on steam bent white oak frames to help seal them. I also plan on using a red lead primer befor painting them with grey bilge paint. Should I put the 2018 sealer on the frames before I steam them or is there something else I can ues to help protect them from moisture and rot, for that is what got to the old frames in the first place?

2011-12-05JOANNE COURTICE: We used the Pettit Old Salem 2018 clear sealer on our Sapelle Mahogany bow platform and also on the Teak on the deck of our sailboat and are very happy with it. It has sealed the wood and the areas on our boat where we used it are exposed to water often.
2011-12-05ROLAND JOHNSON: William
Use the Pettit sealer after you have steam them. Put on 2-3 coats of sealer. If the weather is good you can put on a couple of coats in a day.
2011-12-30GLENN SEEBER: I believe that I would bend the frames prior to sealing them. I would then seal them with at least two coats and try to get the primer on the ends so that it seals them. I am currently rebuilding a 1960 Cruiser's Inc boat that had rot in the frames. Most of the rot seamed to have wicked up from the ends of the frames.
I have now used an Alkyd Gloss enamel on two projects for bilge paint and have been extremely happy with the ease of application and results. I brushed one project and sprayed the other. The paint is Kurfees Rustplate Alkyd Gloss Enamel made by Progressive Paint Co. The color was number 189 which is a burgundy color.
2012-01-22DONALD BERG: Bend your oak frames before applying any sealer//finish. If you are having rot problems, add a small amount of any paint additive that resists fungi and mildews to the sealer.
When I bend wood (and I have a lot of experience building recurve archery bows) I place the wood in a vice with wood jaws (remove the steel jaws and replace them with wood). Attach bungee cords to the end of the wood and the other end to something static. This creates tension. I then use two heat guns and heat the wood as it bends. If I have to have a thicker rib, I build it up from laminates that I have bent with heat. I always bend gunnels, etc., with this technique which makes them easier to install without breaking.
Oak, btw, is very easy to bend with heat.

2011-10-31HOWARD SIMONSON: This is the first time I'm using Old Salem. I'm using it as a high build sanding sealer over Epifanes Rapid Clear. I'm using the Rapid clear to make the initial bond. When I treat my white oak, I coat it with Smiths Cold CPES Epoxy penetrating epoxy, 1 or 2 coats. This penetrates and actually pushes out the water as it sinks into the wood. Then I paint or varnish over the epoxy. The downside to epoxy is that if you want to sand it off, you have to sand deeper than if you just sealed with Rapid Clear. If you do use the epoxy, watch the fumes. Really potent.
2011-12-03ED BROMUND: yes that s the same thing I used it for, my source of info was lyman boat works web site very informitive, good luck

This sealer was specifically recommended as an undercoat sealer for Epifanes varnish or Gloss Wood Clear products and seems to work very well allowing good varnish build without excess wood absorption or dry spots.
