Questions & Answers about Jabsco Manual Marine Toilets:
2013-04-14STEPHEN QUATRANO asked: It seems like this model requires access to the space underneath where the whole thing is mounted. Is that correct? I do not see how that's possible in my case. The bolts seem to be threaded directly into a fiberglass panel with no access to the underside to secure nuts. Suggestions?
+Expand Answers
2013-04-17RICHARD SCHOOLEY: There are no nuts under the fiberglass they are like T nuts inbeded in the fiberglass
2013-04-17STEPHEN QUATRANO: Thank you, Richard! That means that if I replace the toilet I need to get one with exactly the same mount, right? Any suggestions? What is the manufacturer of the original head?
2013-04-18RICHARD SCHOOLEY: Most production boats use a jabsco. I replaced my Catalina 270 head last year after 14 years of service, they tend to crack at the back fitting. The new was a perfect fit.
2013-04-17BRANDON ZELENKA: Nope, no access needed. Just Bolts down with stainless lag screws threaded into the fiberglass.
2013-04-17SHAWN SIMS: I purchased this toliet as a replacement. Installation was easy. I used the bolts that were with the kit or used the exsisting bolts from the old head? I've slept since then! I put it my exsisting base and bolted it down. Done!
2013-04-17NEIL MEYER: you need no access underneith
2013-04-17THOMAS CORNACCHIO: Stephen: You are correct. There are four holes for mounting. I used stainless hex lag screws/washers. I built a mahogany base and lag screwed into the 5/4 mahogany base that I varnished. Looks great. You could epoxy glue a piece of 5/8 marine plywood onto the fiberglass base, trim out the edges and screw into that. Epoxy coat the entire wood base and paint it white. It will last forever and provide you with the holding strength you need. I actually took the toilet to the hardware store and got the largest diameter screws that would fit in the holes. Dip them in epoxy and pre-drill smaller pilot holes and you'll be good to go! The toilet works great. Make sure you have ventilated loops above the waterline! Good Luck! Tom/Ipswich, MA
2013-04-17STEPHEN QUATRANO: Awesome idea. The only problem is that my feet don't touch the floor now. With another 5/8" I'll feel like I'm six years old again. I think I'll bring a stool. ;)
2013-04-19THOMAS CORNACCHIO: Stephen: Yeah, didn't think of that. That's the thing with boats; nothing is standard, square or plumb. Every upgrade is a custom job and you have to find a way to make it fit by climbing in and out of the boat a hundred times! Good Luck nonetheless! Tom/Ipswich
2013-04-18TONY CARANO: You do not need to access space under stool, just bolt down on bolts that are protruding out of finerglass
2012-09-01JIM BERRY asked: My pump lost pressure and draws little water from either side of the switch. Do I have to replace the entire pump assembly or can I just replace the piston?
+Expand Answers
2012-10-23NEIL MEYER: i would just buy the rebuild kit and go from there.
2012-07-31A shopper asked: I am having a back flow problem. What is the fix?
+Expand Answers
2012-08-02JEFFREY FASNACHT: Replace the Joker Valve at the base of the unit. It is a screwdriver job and takes 10-20 mins.
2012-08-02JORDAN HIGGINS: I'm no expert but here's what I can suggest:
1. Be sure to keep the wet-dry switch in the dry/right position, and the pump handle down and locked when not in use.
2. If your toilet is older it could need a valve replaced, probably the "joker valve". (kits are available)
3. If your toilet is new or has always done this, you likely need to install the "anti-siphon vented loop" described in the installation instructions. (added cost for parts unfortunately)
4. Double check that you are getting back flow (stinky) rather than rinse water from outside. A temp fix for rinse water is just closing the thru-hull intake valve when not in use.
I hope this helped. My old toilet used to back flow, but I haven't had a problem since installing a new one. (Didn't bother with the vented loop and OK so far) I upgraded to a full size seat and newer tech, rather than just replacing the joker valve etc.
2012-08-22JAMES GEIL: If the toilet is mounted below the waterline, then vented loops should be installed on both inlet and outlet (instructions for this were included with the toilet). A temporary measure would be to simply be sure the sea cocks are left closed when not in use.
2012-04-09A shopper asked: Jabsco Manual Marine Toilets how does it mancerate solids to tank?
+Expand Answers
2012-04-10JOHN GATES: The manual marine head does not macerate. That is why it is critical not to put anything in the head that wasn't eaten first, except small amounts of toilet paper. The pump moves the semi-solid waste from the bowl, through the joker valve, and into the holding tank.
2011-12-30MATT DECKER asked: I thinking of buying one of these units for my travel trailer. Will this unit work with constant pressure on the water supply side?

2012-02-07NICHOLAS AMASAH: i want to thank you very much i just want to tell you that i have not received yet so i can,t say anything now,but my friends tell me is very good product and that is why i went in to buy it,
so please can you send me the tracking now to enable me track now .anyway we hope to do a very good business now .
Thank you
hope to hear from you soon.
2012-02-13THOMAS CORNACCHIO: Matt : I just bought this unit for my boat where the application does not require water pressure in fact there is a real risk of the boat sinking if the unit is not installed properly. That is why these units are designed to run dry and be filled -drained and refilled so you can secure all petcocks and use loops above the water line. Your best bet is to call Jabsco directly. Those guys will know. The company is located the next town over from where I live in Gloucester MA as they are designed for commercial fisherman away at sea for weeks so it has to work for those guys. Give them a call for info. on your modification. I haven't installed it yet but I believe it to be a very good/dependable toilet especially for the money. Good Luck! Tom/Ipswich MA

2011-11-09CHRIS TUCKER asked: I am considering purchasing one of these and thinking through the installation. How are the tank contents kept from backflowing into the head...is there a check valve or something put in line or is the pump itself supposed to stop it?
Thanks,
+Expand Answers
2011-11-09CARL BOWEN: I installed mine plumbed directly to the holding tank. There is no other back flow restriction / valve needed. The head works very well
2011-12-30Glen Knight: Chris,
The pump will serve to stop backflow of waste from the holding tank into the toilet bowl. Jabsco's design provides for the pump to be locked to prevent either flooding from outside or backflows from inside. It is wise to follow the "twist-n-lock" procedure noted by the manufacturer. These heads can be mounted either above or below the waterline...a nice feature, but one will certainly want to pay attention making sure the lock is in the right position after use. I have four units on two different boats and have been very pleased. --Glen K.
2011-12-30RICHARD SCHOOLEY: There is normally a loop in the hose which is at least 12" above the toilet water level. Some have an ABS loop with a breather valve. My loop is in the sink cabinet next to the toilet.
2011-10-04A shopper asked: I have a Jabsco 29090-2000 is it replaced by the 3000? are the mounting holes the same, contections? In other words is it a drop in? The base valve gasket. Is it just a gasket? Some say it has a flapper valve. I say the only valve is the joker and if water will not leave the bowl after pumping that is the problem. When ordering a kit is the 2000 series 98-07' or from 08'?
2011-10-01A shopper asked: I have a compact Jabso manual head installed in my boat. I have a crack and leak in the plastic just above where the pump bolts to the base.
Can I buy just the pump assembly. Is it an easy install, any tricks to share?
+Expand Answers
2011-10-03BRANDON ZELENKA: Mine was cracked to but in a different spot. The answer is yes you most certainly can buy just the pump assembly but there is a catch. If you have an older head, the parts are next to impossible to find and if you do they are going to cost more than a replacement head if you do find them.
If you have a newer head, you can easily get a replacement pump but the price of the pump from what I found was only ~$30-$40 different then a whole replacement. Being you have a compact head, now might be a good time to upgrade to a normal size if you have room or just replace the whole thing and keep your old one for replacement/service parts.
If your pretty handy and want to save some cash. You may be able to repair it. I would suggest a 2 part epoxy since they make a strongest bond. Take a dremel multi tool and V out the crack slightly to give the epoxy a good base to stick to. After that tape off around the crack for easy clean up and mix epoxy. Apply to crack, let dry, clean up/sand down excess and touch up with some paint if you feel it needed.
good luck.
2011-11-20RICHARD SCHOOLEY: I just repaired a similar toilet took about ten minutes. The the kit included a partial pump rebuild kit wich was unexpected. definently improved the toilet
2011-11-28Glen Knight: The pump assembly for the Jabsco compact is available at a very reasonable cost and is easy to install with straight-forward directions and a few simple tools. I own four of these units on two different boats...the Jabsco is worthy of the cost and effort to repair it. I have also found that the life of the pump gaskets and diaphram can be lengthened considerably by wiping the pump shaft frequently with vegetable oil. Petroleum based or synthetic lubes will likely damage said rubber parts. The vegie oil does the trick every time with no worries and reduces the stress on the plastic pump housing that results from a sticky shaft.
2011-07-26A shopper asked: What's your opinion?
+Expand Answers
2011-10-03BRANDON ZELENKA: I would have to see the crack to give an honest one. Depends on you. If you ok with just a really quick fix to get you by.. you could take a pocket knife and scrape each side of the crack to V it out a little and apply some quick dry 3m 5200 adhesive sealant (outstanding stuff! its really like rubber in a tube and very permanent once dried) and force it into the crack with your finger. Let it dry over a day or so and probably work....
But if your a perfectionist and need things to be right in all respects. Id just replace it and save your old one for parts. Especially if your boat is used for salt water.
2011-10-03BRANDON ZELENKA: I replaced mine due to being an older style and wanting a larger bowl.
Comments about ITT Jabsco Jabsco Manual Marine Toilets:
Internal components are not designed for marine environment. Replacement parts costs as much as the price of a new unit, so do not bother to buy them. I replaced my existing Jabsco with a new unit. The new one failed to perform after a few uses, leaking used waters through the pump handle and returning used waters back into the bowl. This makes using TONS of water, filling the holding tank in no time.
I would not recommend this to my enemy.

Comments about ITT Jabsco Jabsco Manual Marine Toilets:
This manual toilet is the industry standard on most American boats today. It is manual and not electric so takes some work but will last forever if you replace the seals every once in a while. It is the best bang for your buck anywhere. The non-compact size is a little bigger but not worth the extra money for 3/4" of seat.
