Choosing the proper size: You have to remove the screw head if its still there. Knowing the wire size of your screw--refer to the Shank column if there is still a shank to grab. If all you have is thread--refer to Thread column sizes.

2012-09-05HENRY CYGAN: Sue - I have successfully used these on #12 screws setting mahogany planks into white oak frames. If you were working in all softwood, you might be able to stretch it to #14 or 1/4". I always use a bit brace for the necessary "feel" and "control" that are lost with handheld power tools.

Before discovering Jamestown Distributors and factory-made tubular screw extractors. I made my own, out of ordinary roll-pins, purchased from a fastening supplier or bearing house. A slitting file or triangle file will do the job.
For non-standard sizes, I still make my own. I suggest you try the same.
Unscrew-Ums is an excellent concept. I wish they were made of harder material so they would last longer.
Heating the screw, until it smokes, with a soldering iron, slightly chars the wood and melts the resins, releasing the screw. Also, heating the screws frozen into fibreglass will melt the resin, again releasing screws.

2012-09-05ERIC GREEN: I am not sure of an absolute limit for the size of the screw. The set of extractors come with a rough estimate of screw size on which to be used. I have not encountered an upper limit of screw size on which it is ineffective. The diameter of the extractor should be larger than the central core of the screw, but just slightly smaller than the maximal width of the screw thread. Sorry I don't have a definite answer for you, but glad that I have not experienced a situation in which the extractors did not work for the application.

the largest one that i bought will remove a 10 gauge screw , this was separate from the ones i bought in the set , i think it was the largest one available

I purchased a set of these and one by itself which was the largest available and that biggest one could remove a 10 gauge screw about 1 1/2" long
2012-09-06IAN MARCHUK: Like so many dilemmas the answer is it depends....on fastener and wood degradation, size , the type of wood the fastener is anchored in and a host of variables. The removal of broken/corroded fasteners is another chapter in the industrial arts.
Every application is different. Unscrewums are another inexpensive tool in the box invented by someone who needed a better solution.
Get the sizes you think may work and give it a whirl. Try different slow speeds and pressure techniques.
If I had a better idea of what you were dealing with specifically I might have a narrower suggestion.

These work great! I was blown away how well these work! I have an old Lyman and while removing the screws holding on the rear exhaust cover plates... 3 screw heads snapped leaving the shanks in the wood. One of these extractors did the trick. Took about 10 minutes and all three cracked shanks were removed using one bit. When using, you wil need to put a little pressure on the bit to get it to "bite" into the shank.
