Sheffield Super Bright is a gold enamel metallic paint that simulates the look of gold leaf gilding without the expense. It replaces the no longer available Kemp Permagild.
Excellent for boat lettering work, Sheffield Gold Enamel is designed for fine finishing wherever the richness and beauty of gold is desired. Boat names, numbers, and lettering are good examples of where this paint can be used. Apply by brush, roller, or spray for superb decorative effect. Gives accent of gilded gold luster to brighten areas. This paint provides superb visible range to quarterboards and boat names.
Super Bright Gold Enamel is suitable for surfaces subject to handling or for exterior work. Non-tarnishing oil alkyd based enamel will not change color on exposure to light, heat, or moisture. An excellent paint for working sign boards and lettering.

Questions & Answers about Sheffield Super Bright Gold Metallic Paint:
2013-05-18A shopper asked: How big is coverage from 1 pint can?
2013-03-25BRUCE G. KALEITA asked: How light is it? I need real gold color.
+Expand Answers
2013-03-27SCOTT CULSHAW: Bruce,
This paint is GREAT! I think a pint will paint most of my 54 ft. OA. It doesn't separate like a lot of the gold paint that I have used in the past. I used it for the lettering on the side boards and I think they look better than the last sign painters did.
Scott
2013-03-27RAY MARTIN: The color is very much like a 24-carat finish as you would find on a picture frame. Stain finish, not glossy. I pained the finials on my iron fence a year-and-a-half ago and they look freshly painted. I looked a long time for this product and it met all my expectations.
2013-03-28JILL CHEEVER: I used one coat and it is about the same color as you would find in gold jewlery...maybe a tad lighter.
2013-03-28JOSEPH BRESNAN: It is decent but after experimenting, nothing works like real gold leaf.
2013-03-28STAN GILBERTSON: Used it to paint incised carved letters in mahogany, for a boat name.
It appears very much like gold leaf, and holds up well outdoors.
Also used it on a carved Bellamy Eagle.
I will continue to use on all jobs in place of gold leaf
2013-03-28TOM SILVA: This paint has a light tan(ish)-gold metallic sheen but still looks like applied paint to me. I was looking for something that more closely resembled gold-leaf ...or at least an approximation of that look. I was dissapointed. Tom
2013-03-11A shopper asked: will this work on metal?
+Expand Answers
2013-03-13DON LOURIE: The label on the can says if you paint metal, use a metal primer first. I generlly agree with label instructions.
2013-03-14WILLIAM CLERY: Yes. It is a solvent based paint (I think it's an enamel paint) I used on wood. If I were to use on metal I would first prime paint the clean metal with a good etching primer.
2012-07-23DJ KEARNS asked: Has anyone ever used this paint for lettering on a headstone?
+Expand Answers
2012-07-23ROBERT MATTALIANO: Worked very well in a marine application on fiberglass hull/gel coat, which is a reasonably harsh environment.
2012-07-23DON LOURIE: This could be used for headstones but the stone needs to be sealed first. A good latex clear sealer like Seal-Krete would work well. Ar any good exterior latex primer would work. Then apply tow coats of Gold
2012-07-24JOSEPH HELFAND: I can't answer your specific question, but I used the product for an outdoor sign on a boat & really like the results.

2012-07-06JASON COBB asked: Hello I used this product on a cast iron fence and it looks wonderful. I wanted to know what I should use to seal it? A varnish? I am not sure and if you have a brand I should look for. Thanks!

2012-07-06FRANK SPENCER: A coat of a quality grade clear marine spar varnish will prevent surface oxidation and keep the gold luster bright for an extended period. Epifanes clear gloss spar varnish would be my top choice.
2012-07-06MIKE DUERNBERGER: Spar varnish will work well, but may dull the finish a bit
2012-07-07RICHARD KIMBALL: Varnish over enamel is a no-no. You might end up with blisters, peeling and no adhesion. Let it dry a few days, then use Turtle wax, or a good marine wax.

2012-07-13ROBERT HARRIMAN: Hello, Jason:
I used Sheffield Super bright Gold Metallic Paint to highlight characters on an aluminum address plaque on the south-facing front of my house. It's a brutal sun exposure which destroyed the original "anodized?" gold-on-green finish in about seven years. Three years later the characters are as bright as the day I re-hanged the plaque. Like you, I wondered about what type of UV protection I could apply over this finish, but none of the clear coat products I found offered UV protection, and in fact warned to NOT expose to excessive direct sunlight! So, my advice is to enjoy your beautiful finish. As long as the iron beneath is sound you should be able to enjoy for years to come! -Rob H. Prospect Park, NJ
2012-06-22JOHN PENSO asked: Good morning can this product be used on corten ? or do I need a primer and if yes, what type of primer.
Thanks,

+Expand Answers
2012-06-22ED WEGLEIN: I would definetly use a primer on steel. Any primer rated for steel should work.
2012-06-22JOSEPH HELFAND: Hi John, I'm not sure since I used it on wood & am not home to look on the label --- traveling for 3 weeks. I hope someone else can give you that answer. Good luck.

2012-04-13A shopper asked: Can I use this on vinyl?
+Expand Answers
2012-04-13EDWARD TARLOV: I do not know whether this paint would work on vinyl but from past experience would ask an auto body shop for advice. They are sometimes called on to paint a vinyl covered car roof. Years ago I got a special paint from an auto supply to paint some plastic dorade vents - it worked well
2012-04-13BERYN HAMMIL: I wIsh I could say definitively that it will work on vinyl, but since I'm not a professional painter, I hesitate to give this kind of advice. I know that it's wonderful on metal.
2012-04-13RAY MARTIN: This is a super good product, but I cannot say how good it would adhere to vinyl, especially if the vinyl surface is flexible like a tarp. If the vinyl is relatively rigid and you apply a primer first, then it might work out just fine.
2012-04-13MIKE DUERNBERGER: I would not recommend using on vinyl as you may encounter adhesion problems. I make signs for a living, I would recommend this paint for boat lettering, mdo and carved cedar signs with multiple coats to ensure longevity.
2012-04-11A shopper asked: Can this gold paint be used on concrete....does it need a primer coat and a coat to protect?
+Expand Answers
2012-04-11CLAUDE SHAWBELL: Since concrete is porous and attracts moisture I would apply a base coat for the gold paint. I usually apply a sealing coat of polyurethane after it dries too (gives it even more lustre!). As an artist I have used other brands of gold paint over the years, and this is the best. It maintains its true gold lustre for years.
2012-04-13MIKE DUERNBERGER: I would use a light colored primer and then multiple coats of gold followed by a clear.
2012-03-15A shopper asked: I'm wanting to paint some cement items in this gold paint...is there a primer that I should use first; then, after painted with the gold paint, does it need a protective coat--esp in a tropical climate? What would you recommend?
+Expand Answers
2012-03-15DON LOURIE: I would use a good latex for concrete primer then apply a deep yellow latex paint over it. Then apply the Metallic Gold.
2012-03-15CAROL MELTON: Sorry, we do not use this paint on cement, so I can't comment on that. However, I do use it in a swimming pool building and it seems to handle this humid environment just fine without a protective coat.
2012-03-18KAREN HANSELMAN: We painted over wood, the primer we used was regular paint. A few coats of clear varnish over made it really shine. Karen
2012-02-18HAROLD SNYDER asked: I need a bright gold paint to paint a lion head to put on the harp I made. The head is a cast resin and looks like plaster of Paris, but it is not. The harp is made from Walnut wood and a bright gold lion head will really set it off. Do you feel your super bright gold metallic paint will do the job? Dr. Harold E. Snyder, Luthier

2012-02-21PAUL BARTELS: Hi Harold,
I'm pretty sure this paint would be perfect for your application. I used it on a wooden accent piece on my sailboat. I'm not sure what kind of wood it was but it has a bas relief floral design. I stripped and sanded the whole thing. I used cetol light teak on the background wood and painted the relieved part with the gold metallic paint. I put several layers of cetol clear over the whole as a protective coating. I've only had it on for one season, but the gold paint looks great and has shown no signs of chipping or wearing away and that is in a very harsh marine environment. BTW, I called the manufacturer of the paint and they told me to coat to paint with a clear acrylic. I did so, but that did not hold up. Probably be ok for your usage (unless you're taking your harp out on a sailboat).

2012-02-21LORI POER: I bought this paint from Jamestown Distributors about three years ago to use on our neighborhood entracnce sign lettering. It is a nice metallic gold that really makes the letters stand out from the black sign. It has been through three winters and it still shiny gold. Hope this helps.
2012-02-21CLAUDE SHAWBELL: This is far the best gold paint I have ever used. I first purchased it to paint letters for a custom sign and then coated the sign with clear polyurethane. It has been on the outside of a building for over two years and still looking great. I am an artist and now use it in my paintings.

2012-02-22FRANK SPENCER: We have used this gold-look paint for some detail striping and detailing on the fiberglass hull of our 36 foot sailboat and are very pleased with its crisp gold color and the way it has held up in the marine environment so far. This wiil continue to be my gold paint of choice.
2012-02-23STEVE BOBO: It ought to work. I've learned the a touch of fine sandpaper can brighten it further. I used it for lettering on a boat transom.
Best,

I bought Kemps Permagild to restore a South facing aluminum house plaque which had weathered and started to pit in reaction to the masonry wall. An attractive dark green gloss for the background is easy enough to locate in any local hardware store, but all of the "gold" paints seem to be "craft grade" only, doomed to quickly fail in the brutal exposure. Permagild requires a bit of patience, as a dark background shows through. It took four coats to fully cover, with a day's drying time between coats. (Had to apply light coats to keep neat appearance on raised characters and border!) After six months outdoors our house plaque still loooks nicer than it did brand new! The original anodized finish had nowhere near the depth & contrast of our re-finish. I even skipped the clearcoat. Looking forward to using Permagild on some cheap looking steel entry door hinges to class up my home's rear entry. Probably I'll clearcoat hinges for better "brass" appearance.

I used this paint for a gold stripe on my boat. First attempt found me trying to brush it on. This gave me brush strokes every few feet where I would have to lift the brush. I was not happy with the result. Eventually I figured out that I could roll it on with a 1" roller. This came out very well and I am pleased with the result.

I bought this after much research to do the gold on the teak sideboards on my boat. The finish looks great not quite as bright as a true gold leaf but with the deep carvings on my sideboards it would have been impossible to get glue and leaf into the small areas. I covered mine with a good high gloss varnish and they really look great. I would highly recommend to anyone and the service from Jamestown was outstanding.

I bought this paint specifically to finish a repair/restore job on a life-size statue of Saint Patrick. I needed an exterior gold paint that would look good and stand up to the elements. The weather here has not cooperated and the restoration now must wait until spring. I trust the paint will be fine for the job I need to complete. I bought this paint because of the reviews I read.

The person who complained that it wasn't as shiny "like gold" like they expected it would be should have read the other earlier comment that said "put a coat of varnish on it and no one can tell it's not the real thing!"
I've used Kemp Permagild for decades, and it's the best. It helps to us an expensive fine quality brush. For a truly incredible faux gold leaf finish I put a very thin coat of Gold Leaf Antiquing Glaze on top of it; I let it dry very well, I don't wipe it off, and I seal it in place with a coat of varnish (tung oil is the easiest - just put it on gently so you don't wipe off the antiquing glaze).
