Dolfinite is a flexible, semi paste bedding compound. Its slow oxidizing waterproof formula makes it ideal for bedding in joints in keels, stem, sternpot, transom, battens and other hull components. Use it to bed deck fittings, moldings, and trim around deck houses.
Use Dolfinite on wood, metal, or fiberglass wherever waterproof seals are required. It can applied by hand, pressure gun, or putty knife. Thinning is not normally required. Once the compound has firmly skinned over, you can even paint over it.
It can also be used as a double planking compound in the construction of double planked hulls where canvas is not used. Apply a liberal coat with a serrated trowel on the inner layer before laying up the outer planking.

Questions & Answers about Dolfinite Bedding Compound:
2012-11-07JOSEPH ALVES JR. asked: Can Dolfinite be used for plastics such as hatches and port lights? If not, what do you recommend, silicone rubber adhesive caulking, Sikaflex, or Dow Corning 795? I'm told that silicone is bad for FRP. Is this true?

2012-11-09Nathan Fournier: Dolfinite is ideal for bedding wooden boats such as hulls, keels, etc., but technically yes it can be used on fiberglass, and most metals. However for plastics especially hatches and port lights which can be exposed to the sun, I highly recommend 3M 4000UV "MMM-06580" which is a great overall product, for flexible rub rails as well. If your set on using Sikaflex the "SIK-295UV" is an excellent choice for your application, either will work well. For FRP's (Fiberglass reinforced panels), use our 3M Polyurethane Adhesive Sealant 560 "MMM-41597" instead of silicone, Silicone shouldn't damage it as it's used to caulk all expansion joints around and between FRP panels in many jobs, thank you.

2012-11-09Joseph Alves Jr.: Nathan,
Thank you for getting back to me on this. I've used 3-M 4000UV in the past and found it to be my choice of all the sealants I've ever tried. However, I just recently replaced a lexan lens on a Gray Marine plastic hatch cover on my O'Day 222 and used Dap Silicone Rubber Adhesive sealant with great results. My hatch is bedded with Dow Corning 795 which I find too messy to work with but kind to plastics and FRP.
Thanks again.
Sincerely,
Joe
2012-11-29Nathan Fournier: That's good, I'm glad it worked, 3M also makes a great Marine Grade Silicone "MMM-08029", thank you.

2012-08-03PAUL HARMON asked: What can I use to thin it? The can says 1481 compound thinner, but I can't find it being sold??
+Expand Answers
2012-08-03JEFF HUFFENBERGER: It is soluble in mineral spirits, so that will thin it when fresh. If it has hardened in the can (as it will tend to do) I don't think there is anything you can do with it.
2012-08-03Joe Spadaro: Paul
I really never have thinned it before but I recall on an old can years ago that toluene could be used.
Personnaly I would try mineral spirits if Toluene("Toluol") is not available.
Good Luck

2012-08-03CONNOR WALLACE: use boiled linseed oil to thin it down. The dolfinite compound is pretty thin to begin with though, make sure you dont thin it down too much
2012-08-04DOUG LANCASTER: Hello Paul, I have not tried to thin dolfinite, but I usually use plain paint thinner as means to clean up excess from the work area. As you may have discovered it can be pretty sticky and is difficult to get into small areas. I have found that a small greas gun with a needle tip can help with application in screw holes etc. I then use the paint thinner to clean up the tools at the end of the project. Good luck.

2012-08-04DOUG LANCASTER: Hi Paul, as follow-up to my previous post my comments apply to the natural or mahogany product, I have not had good luck with white.

2012-04-23JAY KLALES asked: can dolfinite 2005 be used for bedding ports?
+Expand Answers
2012-04-23RODNEY WESTHUIS: I used the product on a woodie street rod panels. I thought it worked very well if you expect to ever remove the item. The Interlux was more like putty but the Dolfinite was more like runny toothpaste, I this thickened it with west filler 407 I believe. Drys almost hard but removable with a finger nail.
2012-04-23Joe Spadaro: Yes
I use it for bedding between planks on a traditional adirondack guideboat. It remains flexabew for many years(between planks). Avoid any bedding compound with anti fungicide additive as it causes copper tacks to turn green andd is very tough to remove.

2012-04-23JOE BERINI: I use Dolfinite to bed window frames and teak trim making sure there are no voids. I then run a fine coat of Polyseamseal to protect the Dolfinite. I don't see why it wouldn't work on ports.
2012-04-23ROBERT GWALTNEY: Yes I would use it if installing ports.
2012-04-23TIM BEACHY: If you think you might need to remove the port at some time, then use Dolfinite. If you never want it to come out again, then use 5200.
2012-04-24HORATIO CINBAD: Ahoy Jay!
Before the advent of the synthetics, there was Dolfinite, "do it right with Dolfinite". The product has been around forever. I was introduced to it in the mid-fifties at $2,25 a Quart! I have used it ever since through my career (Boatbuilding & buccaneering) and on my own ship of my making 45 years ago which I still live aboard.

2011-08-13DON KINNAIRD asked: Can a red mahongy stain be applied prior to application to wood boat?
Good for seating hardware and trim. I Use it for gunwales, outer stems, and keels on wood/canvas canoes. Semi=permanent; you can get them apart without destroying anything years later.
