Frearson wood screws appear similar to the Phillips head but the Frearson has a more pointed 75° V shape. The Frearson tool recess is a perfect cross which minimizes cam out, unlike the Phillips head, which is designed to cam out.

2013-03-25ERIC GRINA: YES THEY DO. I ORDERED A BIT FOR EACH OF A COUPLE OF SIZES AND KEEP THE BITS IN THE BOXES WITH THE SCREWS.
2013-03-25MORGAN SMITH: You can buy magnetic bit holders in most hardware stores and home centers.
They are designed for this type of bit. One a side note I have found that a craftsman 12 volt impact drive works very well to remove fearson screws from my old Chris Craft.
2013-03-25THOMAS MULVIHILL: I used it with a standard power drill and it worked just like any other bit, so I imagine it will work with any standard screwdriver bit holder.

2013-01-11JOHN CLOUGH: The table in the Jamestown (online) catalog shows Number 1 for screw sizes #4-#6 and Number 2 for sizes #8 thru #16.
I agree with that, NUMBER 2 FOR SIZES #8 and #10.
I say with Phillips "when in doubt , always go with the larger choice. I think the same with Frearson.
You will still strip a few but much much better than the wrong tool.
I always spray paint my Frearson drivers to distinguish them from Phillips.
Makes it easier to find and to avoid using wrong one. Order a few. you'll be glad you did

2013-01-12GRAEME DENNETT: I purchased #2 bits and they work very well with #8, #10 and #12 screws. I have not tried them with smaller or larger gauge screws than those. Frearson headed screws work more positively than standard Phillips headed ones.

I was never made aware of the difference between the Frearson and the standard Philips screws and drivers until I read the info in the Jamestown web info. I would recommend any boat owner to at least try the Frearson screw/driver combination. The first time I used them it was an eye-opener. Thanks to Jamestown.

The easiest way to ruin your day is to use a phillips bit on a frearson screw. Most of the wood screws on boats are frearson head, so it's imperitive to have these bits on hand, especially with powered screwdrivers.
