Cut your own wood plugs with Fuller Plug Cutters. WL Fuller's carbon steel plug cutters are heat treat and hardened for long life and clean cuts. Four bladed plug cutters do not eject plugs; it remains on the board and can be broken out with a screwdriver or sawed free. Suitable for both Softwood and most Hardwoods.
Using wood plugs is a great way to eliminate nail holes and marks in wood. Wood putty simply does not look as good over time, nor does it seal as well. Using a glued wood plug ensures the best possible seal and appearance with long term durability. One more tip: For best results, use plug cutters in a drill press if possible.

Questions & Answers about Wood Plug Cutters:
2012-09-25JAMES ESPOSITO asked: Does this cutter cut a tapered or straight plug?
+Expand Answers
2012-09-26WILLIAM LONGSTRETH: It's a straight cut. I use them to remove old plugs in my deck and rails to replace and/or reset the screws and nails. The right size will actually cup around the nails in my deck & create space to reset the nail. I then have to go up a size in the new plug, but it beats redecking.
2012-09-26M. CHRISTIAN NYE: THIS PLUG CUTTER CUTS A STRAIGHT PLUG.
WE JUST USED IT TO CUT 500+ 3/4" PLUGS FOR A 1936 BRITISH CUTTER AND THEY CAME OUT BEAUTIFUL. AS YOU CAN IMAGINE, A DRILL PRESS WAS USED AND EVEN THOUGH WE WERE USING SOUTHERN (YELLOW) PINE, I HAVE USED THIS SAME CUTTER ON TROPICAL HARDWOODS W/ THE SAME DEGREE OF QUALITY.

2012-09-26RUSS KNOX: I believe this cuts a tapered plug. You can test this by cutting a full depth plug from a half inch thick piece of wood. You will have to jimmy the plug out with an icepick or similar tool. Use a forstner bit to drill a hole. If it is tapered the "clean" end a(from the top of the cutter) will start easily. The "fuzzy" end ( from the bottom of the cutter) will be noticeably different.
I've straight cutters to be few and far between.
2012-09-26MORTEN DALENE: This cutter cut a straight plug.
2012-09-26ED FRANKEL: Hi James,
This cutter cuts a straight plug.

2012-01-17A shopper asked: If the hole is 1 1/8" what would the plug cutter be?
Thanks

2012-01-17JOSEPH T CALLAGHAN: The plug cutter would also be 1 1/8". In smaller sizes (up to 5/8" or so, you can get matching drills and plug cutters from W.L. Fuller Co. (through Jamestown Distributors) but for a 1 1/8" hole you're probably using a hole saw, which is less precise, so your fit may not be perfect.
2012-01-17ED FRANKEL: HI Jeff,
The bit pictured is a Fuller and the only one I have is a 7/16th. I just made a test plug and it leaves a 3/4" hole. That's a 5/16 difference. 5/16 less then
1 1/8 is 13/16 and I'll let you choose between a 3/4" plug maker or a 7/8'. My feeling is the steel may be beefer on the larger bits and hence I would go with 3/4".

2012-01-17WILLY LEMAY: An 11/8" hole takes the same size plug. To make sure the plug is tight, redrill the hole. Depending on where it is and if it's visible you can tap it into some thickened epoxy.
2012-01-18JIM PIKE: 1 1/8"
2012-01-18ROGER KOHLES: I haven't cut holes that big so I don't have a good answer for you, sorry.
Tapered plug cutters I bought from Lee Valley seem to have just the right diameter - tapered such that the diameter matching the correpsonding size hole is reached before the top of the plug. This one from Fuller seems to produce plugs where the diameter matching the hole is at the top of the plug, generally resulting in the plug seating below flush with the surrounding surface.
