Edson Pedestal friction brakes dampen steering wheel action and allow you to set a course, secure the wheel and under most conditions, hold the boat on course. Wheel brakes are not a substitution for auto-pilot, but they do allow the helmsman to step away from the wheel to adjust rigging or notify the next watch.

Since 2003, all steerers feature thru-shaft wheel brakes and this brake kit is not applicable for newer pedestals.
Edson wheel brakes can easily be retrofitted to 2002 and older Edson steerers in about 20 minutes. These pedestal brakes have a bronze construction and use premium, long lasting brake linings. As an added safety feature the stainless steel shaft and knob are designed to break apart if a line gets tangled and can be easily popped back together once clear.
